Book excerpt: One of the best travel writers now at work in the English language brings back the sights and sounds from a dozen different frontiers. A cryptic encounter in the perfumed darkness of Bali; a tour of a Bolivian prison, conducted by an enterprising inmate; a nightmarish taxi ride across southern Yemen, where the men with guns may be customs inspectors or revolutionaries–these are just three of the stops on Pico Iyer’s latest itinerary. But the true subject of Sun After Dark is the dislocations of the mind in transit. And so Iyer takes us along to meditate with Leonard Cohen and talk geopolitics with the Dalai Lama. He navigates the Magritte-like landscape of jet lag, “a place that no human had ever been until forty or so years ago.” And on every page of this poetic and provocative book, he compels us to redraw our map of the world.

Book Edith Wharton and Cosmopolitanism

Download or read book Edith Wharton and Cosmopolitanism written by Meredith L. Goldsmith and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These energizing, excellent essays address the international scope of Wharton's writing and contribute to the growing fields of transatlantic, hemispheric, and global studies."--Carol J. Singley, author of A Historical Guide to Edith Wharton "Readers will emerge with a new respect for Wharton's engagement with the world around her and for her ability to convey her particular vision in her literary works."--Julie Olin-Ammentorp, author of Edith Wharton's Writings from the Great War Hailed for her remarkable social and psychological insights into the Gilded Age lives of privileged Americans, Edith Wharton, the first woman to win a Pulitzer Prize, was a transnational author who attempted to understand and appreciate the culture, history, and artifacts of the regions she encountered in her extensive travels abroad. Edith Wharton and Cosmopolitanism explores the international scope of Wharton's life and writing, focusing on how her work connects with the idea of cosmopolitanism. This volume illustrates the many ways Wharton engaged with global issues of her time. Contributors examine both her canonical and lesser-known works, including her art historical discoveries, political work, travel writing, World War I texts, and first novel. They consider themes of anarchism, race, imperialism, regionalism, and orientalism; Wharton's treatment of contemporary marriage debates; her indebtedness to her literary predecessors; and her genre experimentation. Together, they demonstrate how Wharton's struggle to balance her powerful local and national identifications with cosmopolitan values, resulted in a diverse, complex, and sometimes problematic relationship to a cosmopolitan vision. Book excerpt: Afterthoughts describes rural life and beekeeping in Iowa, before the author was a medical student at the State University of Iowa. Turner traveled as a Pfizer medical student representative in the 1952 summertime, before working on an acute poliomyelitis ward later that summer. A blind date with polio nurse Dorothy Turner led to marriage in 1953, and the experiences of medical intern and nursing life together in Phoenix, followed by nursing and U.S. Public Health Medical Service positions in 1955 serving Oklahomas Cherokee and Choctaw Native Americans. Orthopedic residency training in San Francisco and Philadelphia preceded a long career at the renowned Lovelace Clinic in Albuquerque. After Dorothys 1985 death from cancer, eventual marriage in 1990 to Karen Howard led both of us to challenging and meaningful retirement non-profit organization positions, and to unique foreign travel experiences. Afterthoughts is a retrospective book, after previous publication of Pathways Taken - A Hawkeye In the Enchanted Land by AuthorHouse in 2004.

Book The Meaning of Travel

Download or read book The Meaning of Travel written by Emily Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we think more deeply about our travels? This was the question that inspired Emily Thomas' journey into the philosophy of travel. Part philosophical ramble, part travelogue, The Meaning of Travel begins in the Age of Discovery, when philosophers first started taking travel seriously. It meanders forward to consider Montaigne on otherness, John Locke on cannibals, and Henry Thoreau on wilderness. On our travels with Thomas, we discover the dark side of maps, how the philosophy of space fuelled mountain tourism, and why you should wash underwear in woodland cabins... We also confront profound issues, such as the ethics of 'doom tourism' (travel to 'doomed' glaciers and coral reefs), and the effect of space travel on human significance in a leviathan universe. The first ever exploration of the places where history and philosophy meet, this book will reshape your understanding of travel.
