Book After My Fall from the Tree House

Download or read book After My Fall from the Tree House written by Harris Green and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was not quite three, I fell out of the family tree house and landed on my head. Since then friends and family have wondered about my brain. This memoir of several dozen vignettes explores my fallen condition while growing up in Alabama, while serving as a medic with the Navy and Marine Corps, and while pursuing my teaching career. As a five-year-old I hated suspenders, so when I got my first belt I stood next to the highway in front of our house with my stomach stuck out so people in cars passing by could see my belt While serving in the Navy, I once tried to impress a barmaid in Tijuana with my knowledge of high school Spanish by reciting the Lords Prayer in Spanish. Other vignettes celebrate normal times, as when I provided nursing care for a slowly dying, 84-year-old veteran of the Spanish American War. Another is when I attended the graduation of a former student of mine, a 50-year-old black woman who graduated summa cum laude from Mercer University. At eighteen she was denied admission to Mercer because of her race. Of course the best times have been with my beloved Danish wife of fifty-one years, our son and his family, and my parents, brothers and sisters. I hope the reader finds all of the vignettes either amusing or engaging.

But when a comet of a girl moves in up the street, Matt discovers a side of himself that's dying to break free and try something new. Lia doesn't see the Matt Crosby everyone else sees: the shy, awkward kid with the stammer, but instead a friend. With Lia, the long, summer days are action-packed with wonder. From scavenger hunts at the grocery store to midnight canoeing under the moon at Preacher Higgins' pond. Or maybe just staring at the sky and feeling completely comfortable in his own skin. But in a small town like Maycomb, a girl like Lia doesn't go unnoticed. Matt's old friends make jokes about the way Lia dresses, her hair, even her darker skin. As a correctional officer, Matt's father has already run into Lia's mother at the jail. But it isn't until Matt discovers Lia sleeping in his treehouse that he realizes things might be worse for her than she's letting on. Having found the courage to follow his heart instead of his friends, Matt realizes that somewhere along the way, he became the Matt Crosby Lia saw all along.

Download or read book The Treehouse Book written by Peter Nelson and published by Universe. This book was released on 2000-07-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems that almost everyone likes treehouses. Smiles of recognition turn into grins of enthusiasm as more people discover them and dream about making their own private retreats or family play spaces. And it's nice to remind ourselves that treehouses are built into the oldest and most forgiving, living things on earth. Also, history records treehouses as being built as deliberate follies, as challenges for arboreal designers, for merrymaking, and for keeping the spirit of fairy tales alive. But treehouses can also be social places. We will visit many that were built to entertain, to hang out with friends, or as guest houses. Trees come in all types. Master treehouse builders Peter and Judy Nelson, with David Larkin, have embarked on yet another treehouse-discovery expedition across America, this time adding the investigation of backyard playhouses to their agenda. Now, in The Treehouse Book, they reveal their findings, illustrated and described in the most complete volume yet. From casual treeshacks made from discarded lumber to multitiered feats of fancy, they found shelters representing myriad builders--interesting characters ranging from childhood fanatics grown up, to weekend carpenters, to those who want their grandkids to have the best clubhouse on the block. Detailed how-to information, including plans and drawings, is woven with behind-the-scenes tales of each structure's occupants and stunning interior and exterior photographic exploration.

Book My South Seas Sleeping Beauty

Download or read book My South Seas Sleeping Beauty written by Guixing Zhang and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My South Seas Sleeping Beauty is a captivating coming-of-age tale set in the magical jungles of Borneo. Told through the vivid recollections of a Chinese-Malay youth, the novel recounts the life of Su Qi, a troubled, sensitive son of a wealthy family, and exemplifies the imaginative range of one of Taiwan's most innovative writers. "There were all sorts of stories about how my younger sister died," Su Qi begins, hinting at the power of memory to bend and refract truth. Yet whichever the real story may be, the fact is that the death of Su Qi's sister created an irrevocable rift in Su Qi's family, driving his father into the arms of aboriginal women and his mother into a world of her own invention. In an effort to escape the oppression of home, Su Qi loses himself in the surrounding jungle, full of Communist guerillas and strange tropical fauna. The jungle further blurs the line between fantasy and reality for Su Qi, until he meets Chunxi, the beautiful, frail daughter of his father's best friend. Chunxi is an oasis of kindness and honesty in an otherwise cruel and evasive world, but after a bizarre accident, Chunxi falls into a deep coma, and Su Qui flees to Taiwan. In college Su Qi meets Keyi, a vivacious siren who helps Su Qi forget not only his violent past but also the colorful tales of his youth. When a family member dies, however, Su Qi is pulled back to the jungles of Borneo where he begins to unravel the secrets of his family's past-a story stranger than any fairy tale-and learns that his cherished dream of awakening his beloved Chunxi may be more than just a fantasy. Influenced by the lyricism of William Faulkner and the magical realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, My South Seas Sleeping Beauty is a deeply evocative exploration of sexuality and identity and a masterful reworking of Chinese and Western myth. Valerie Jaffee's careful translation retains all the tone and detail of the original work and provides rare access to a new and exciting generation of Chinese writers born in Southeast Asia.
