Book excerpt: Excerpt from After Fifty Years: Or Letters of a Grandfather on Occasion of the Jubilee of the Free Church of Scotland in 1893 The thought of writing an account of the origin and subsequent progress of the Free Church in letters to his grandchildren, was simmering in the mind of the author, when he received a request from the Publications Committee of the Free Church to write a narrative that, while suitable to the rising generation, might be interesting and instructive to all. This request led him in some degree to modify, without altogether abandoning, his original plan. The familiar style of letters has been retained, and the grandfather has not been altogether superseded. It will be understood that, while this little book goes forth with the general sanction of the Publications Committee, the author alone is responsible for all that it contains.
