Book Petroleum Marketing in Africa

Download or read book Petroleum Marketing in Africa written by M. R. Bhagavan and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nineties saw a fundamental shift in the policy and practice governing the pricing and marketing of petroleum products in Sub-Saharan Africa. Strict government control was replaced by liberalisation. Oil multinationals have been permitted once more to pursue their own strategies in importing and retailing petroleum products. This has profound consequences - for access and affordability by both urban and rural users; for subsidies to ease the price burden on low income groups; for tax revenues; for opportunities for price fixing and oligopoly by multinationals; and most importantly, for generating investment for expanding the retail network beyond the metropolitan areas. In this volume, these issues are examined in depth in the context of two very different cases: Kenya, where full liberalisation has been achieved, and Ethiopia, where the transition from state control to liberalisation has only just begun. A comparative analysis of these two cases yields valuable insights into policies and strategies that African countries need to deploy for ensuring lasting benefits from the imperative of liberalisation.

Book Oil and Gas in Africa

Download or read book Oil and Gas in Africa written by The African Development Bank and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-08-27 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book, a joint work of the African Development Bank and the African Union, presents a comprehensive analysis of the oil and gas resources in Africa. It uniquely highlights, through country examples, and with an African focus but a global perspective, the specific challenges and constraints facing the continent as a whole in the exploitation and utilization of its oil and gas resources. It partly draws on a model that simulates the impact of high oil prices on African economies, a model that was developed by the Research Department of the Bank in a separate study. The roles of AfDB and AU are analyzed, considering their differing, but complementary, mandates geared towards the development of the continent. Finally, the book includes recommendations on the future directions and actions for maximizing benefits of Africa's oil and gas resources.

Book Africa s Petroleum Industry

Download or read book Africa s Petroleum Industry written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation on Africa's petroleum industry makes the following key points: (1) West Africa is a strategic supplier to the U.S./global market, (2) Africa's role in the global market is expected to increase in the medium term, (3) China and India represent competitors with additional bargaining tools -- downstream investment and abundant capital, (4) threats to stability of supply are more internal than external, and (5) increasing political stability in producer countries is the key to reducing supply risk. The briefing charts discuss the following topics: why is African oil strategic?, Africa's increasing importance as an oil producer and supplier, Chinese and Indian influence in Africa in terms of competition for oil supplies and investments in African refining, vulnerabilities in infrastructure and threat of supply disruption, enhancing U.S. energy security, and policy steps the United States could take to enhance its energy security vis-a-vis Africa. The briefing charts include tables, figures, and graphs that present the following information: the top producers, consumers, exporters, and importers of oil in the world; global oil production by region; the top producers and consumers of oil in Africa; the top 15 oil suppliers to the United States; expected market value of West African crude oil production; and a forecast of oil production in Africa from 1981 to 2019.

Book Oil Gas Databook for Developing Countries

Download or read book Oil Gas Databook for Developing Countries written by Derek Fee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to alleviate their problems many less developed countries (LDCs) are endeavoring to develop to the full their energy resources and in particular their hydrocarbon resources. However, the development of these resources is hindered by many factors, among which are the following: badly established estimates of indigenous resources; under-exploration; lack of competent Government institutions to monitor the hydrocarbon sector; lack of local markets to exploit non-oil hydrocarbon finds; refineries which are outdated, producing the wrong product mix and where economies of scale make upgrading difficult. The purpose of this work is to examine the hydrocarbon sector in the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group of countries. An examination of such a diverse group of nations on a global scale is difficult since the group includes relatively rich countries such as Trinidad and Tobago with a GNP per capita of $4000, to the sub-Saharan countries such as Mali with a GNP per capita of $120. No easy solutions will be presented to improve the present energy situation in these countries but the reasons for the lack of hydrocarbon development will be examined. The work of the World Bank and similar international financial institutions will be assessed and a potted review of the hydrocarbon sector in each country will be presented.

Book Africa s New Oil

Download or read book Africa s New Oil written by Celeste Hicks and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of Africa's oil has greatly accelerated in recent years, with some countries looking at the prospect of almost unimaginable flows of money into their national budgets. But the story of African oil has usually been associated with conflict, corruption and disaster, with older producers such as Nigeria having little to show for the many billions of dollars they've earned. In this eye-opening book, former BBC correspondent Celeste Hicks questions the inevitability of the so-called resource curse, revealing what the discovery of oil means for ordinary Africans, and how China's involvement could mean a profound change in Africa's relationship with the West. A much-needed account of an issue that will likely transform the fortunes of a number of African countries – for better or for worse.
