Book Management and Economic Development in sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Management and Economic Development in sub Saharan Africa written by John O. Okpara and published by Adonis & Abbey Publishers Ltd. This book was released on 2007-04-20 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major challenges facing Sub-Saharan African organizations today is how to effectively manage their resources. Though the importance of effective management of organizational resources is generally acknowledged, published research on the theme is disappointingly scarce. This book hopes to contribute in filling the lacuna. Contributors to the volume, which is the first in a book series from African Journal of Business and Economic Research (AJBER), a peer-reviewed, triennial publication, discuss various management issues in sub-Saharan Africa such as employee motivation, job satisfaction, compensation, organizational commitment, ethics, social responsibility and export management and the interplay between these and the effective management of an organization's resources. They argue that effective management of organizational resources - whether in the public or private sector - promotes efficiency, which in turn enhances the organization's ability to compete. The contributors also offer valuable insights into why many organizations in sub-Saharan Africa are inefficiently managed and offer desiderata for overcoming such challenges.

Book A Multidimensional Economic Assessment of Africa

Download or read book A Multidimensional Economic Assessment of Africa written by Jacob Wood and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a useful resource for government policy analysts, academics, students of higher education and business practitioners interested in African economies and the key economic issues these economies are facing in 2020. In the face of weak governance and growth globally, there is still a window of opportunity for countries in Africa to build on not only their traditional industrial capabilities, but also pave the way for positive developments in international trade and in the way governments tackle poverty and inequality. By focusing on four areas: (1) agriculture and livestock, (2) consumption, poverty and inequality, (3) financial services, employment and corporate governance, and (4) economic integration, international trade and foreign direct investment (FDI), this book presents a series of empirical studies that examine important contemporary economic issues facing Africa. The book incorporates a range of methodological approaches, with some chapters providing case study analyses while others embrace more traditional forms of econometric testing.

Book Botswana A Modern Economic History

Download or read book Botswana A Modern Economic History written by Ellen Hillbom and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Together with Mauritius, Botswana is often categorized as one of two growth miracles in sub-Saharan Africa. Due to its spectacular long-run economic performance and impressive social development, it has been termed both an economic success story and a developmental state. While there is uniqueness in the Botswana experience, several aspects of the country’s opportunities and challenges are of a more general nature. Throughout its history, Botswana has been both blessed and hindered by its natural resource abundance and dependency, which have influenced growth periods, opportunities for economic diversification, strategies for sustainable economic and social development, and the distribution of incomes and opportunities. Through a political economy framework, Hillbom and Bolt provide an updated understanding of an African success story, covering the period from the mid-19th century, when the Tswana groups settled, to the present day. Understanding the interaction over time between geography and factor endowments on the one hand, and the development of economic and political institutions on the other, offers principle lessons from Botswana’s experience to other natural resource rich developing countries.

Book African Journal of Business and Economic Research Vol 3 Nos 2 3 2008

Download or read book African Journal of Business and Economic Research Vol 3 Nos 2 3 2008 written by John Kuada and published by Adonis & Abbey Pub Limited. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching economic issue in Sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) today is to ensure a broad-based growth that lifts millions of Africans out of poverty. African countries are therefore consistently compared with high growth Asian countries such as Malaysia and South Korea which were at similar levels of economic growth as African countries for barely five decades ago. But while the Asian continent now enjoys the accolade of "economic miracle," the African situation is usually described by such adjectives as "disaster" and "tragedy" due to decades of non-growth experienced by nearly all SSA countries (Akyz and Gore 2001). The search for growth sustaining economic policies for Africa is therefore as urgent today as it was half a century ago when the torchlight of de-colonilisation was set ablaze in Ghana. The contributions from these papers suggest that the social dimension of economics requires a greater attention, if we are to find a more sustaining growth strategy for Africa. Several scholars have attributed the remarkable growth in Asian countries to their underlying cultural values and effective use of social capital derived from their networks of social relations. According to these studies the Asian people tend to have a strong sense of collective social obligation - i.e. an obligation to fulfil their individual needs without jeopardising the chances of others to fulfil theirs or the entire community to survive and progress (Biggart and Hamilton 1992; Whitley 1992, 1994).

Book Financing Sustainable Development in Africa

Download or read book Financing Sustainable Development in Africa written by Uchenna R. Efobi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume provides a critical evaluation of financing options for sustainable development in Africa. While sustainability has long been the watchword for development programs, and while many African countries have taken initiatives to develop integrated frameworks that tackle developmental challenges—including poverty, education, and health—financing has remained a challenge. In this book, an expert team of chapter authors examines new financing options while also exploring how traditional financing means, such as foreign aid and foreign direct investment, can be more effective for sustainability. The authors discuss how African nations can build adequate structures and productive capacity to create a platform that can meet present economic, social, and environmental needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Practical case studies and scientific evidence give this book a unique approach that is both qualitative and quantitative. This book will be of interest to students, practitioners, and scholars of development studies, public policy and African economics.

Book Women s Empowerment for a Sustainable Future

Download or read book Women s Empowerment for a Sustainable Future written by Claude-Hélène Mayer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-08 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume focuses on women’s empowerment for a sustainable future. It takes cultural and transcultural and positive psychology perspectives into consideration and explores the topic of women’s empowerment from diverse stances, across social strata, cultural divides as well as economic and political divisions. It addresses the critique of the overly Western focus of positive psychology on this topic by adopting a transnational and transcultural lens, and by taking non-WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) samples into in-depth consideration. The chapters therefore focus on women from diverse socio-cultural, political, socio-economic backgrounds and discuss their ways of empowering others and being empowered. They also discuss related positive psychology constructs, such as: coping, resilience, transformation, growth, leadership, creativity, identity development, sustainable action, as well as positive socio-economic, political and eco-sustainable thought and action. The volume as a whole looks at women's leadership as a factor of empowerment. A further fundamental assumption is that women’s empowerment is needed to create a sustainable future at micro-, meso- and macro levels, which presumes safety, peace, ecological considerations, and compassionate leadership.
