Book excerpt: An extensive body of information about the academic failure rate of Black male students amassed over time, but there is limited research on Black males failing English (ELA) classes and struggling with reading comprehension skills. This phenomenological study aims to examine the lived experiences and to hear from these male African American high school students, themselves, about their struggle with reading comprehension. The study is significant because it provides a voice to the lived experiences of Black males who, because of their inability to pass English classes coupled with low reading comprehension skills have had to overcome untold obstacles to graduate from an alternative high school. Nevertheless, they demonstrated academic resilience and met the graduation requirements for their school. In this research study, several theories (African American Male Theory, Attribution, and Expectancy Value Theory, Theory of School Dropouts, and Critical Race Theory) were used to examine the lived experiences of the young men. These theories rest on the belief that Black males can be resilient and successful with the appropriate educational setting, instructions, and teaching instructor. Phenomenology is the qualitative methodology selected for this study because it focuses on understanding individuals' lived experiences and meanings. Many African American males have been unsuccessful in English classes and struggle with reading comprehension skills and consequently have endured significant hardship in establishing meaningful life experiences... Through the use of Phenomenological research tools, data collected demonstrated that, with appropriate educational settings and support, these young men can succeed in English classes and in life. The data collection for this study will consist of face-to-face semi-structured individual interviews with five Black male students attending an alternative high school along with document analysis. The data analysis collected was guided by the research questions and theoretical framework identified in the study.
