Book African American High School Males who Failed a Year of English Class

Download or read book African American High School Males who Failed a Year of English Class written by Alice Marie-Jones Newton and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive body of information about the academic failure rate of Black male students amassed over time, but there is limited research on Black males failing English (ELA) classes and struggling with reading comprehension skills. This phenomenological study aims to examine the lived experiences and to hear from these male African American high school students, themselves, about their struggle with reading comprehension. The study is significant because it provides a voice to the lived experiences of Black males who, because of their inability to pass English classes coupled with low reading comprehension skills have had to overcome untold obstacles to graduate from an alternative high school. Nevertheless, they demonstrated academic resilience and met the graduation requirements for their school. In this research study, several theories (African American Male Theory, Attribution, and Expectancy Value Theory, Theory of School Dropouts, and Critical Race Theory) were used to examine the lived experiences of the young men. These theories rest on the belief that Black males can be resilient and successful with the appropriate educational setting, instructions, and teaching instructor. Phenomenology is the qualitative methodology selected for this study because it focuses on understanding individuals' lived experiences and meanings. Many African American males have been unsuccessful in English classes and struggle with reading comprehension skills and consequently have endured significant hardship in establishing meaningful life experiences... Through the use of Phenomenological research tools, data collected demonstrated that, with appropriate educational settings and support, these young men can succeed in English classes and in life. The data collection for this study will consist of face-to-face semi-structured individual interviews with five Black male students attending an alternative high school along with document analysis. The data analysis collected was guided by the research questions and theoretical framework identified in the study.

Book The Failed Promise of the American High School 1890 1995

Download or read book The Failed Promise of the American High School 1890 1995 written by David L. Angus and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative new study of the American high school examines the historical debates about curriculum policy and also traces changes in the institution itself, as evidenced by what students actually studied. Contrary to conventional accounts, the authors argue that beginning in the 1930s, American high schools shifted from institutions primarily concerned with academic and vocational education to institutions mainly focused on custodial care of adolescents. Claiming that these changes reflected educators' racial, class, and gender biases, the authors offer original suggestions for policy adjustments that may lead to greater educational equality for our ever-growing and ever more diverse population of students.

Book Changing the Course of Failure

Download or read book Changing the Course of Failure written by Sandra Stotsky and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-05-18 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic purpose of this book is to help policy makers at all levels of government understand that (1) widespread adolescent underachievement is not susceptible to solution by educational interventions no matter how much money is allocated to public education; and (2) there are unidentified educational and civic costs to focusing on low achievement and to expecting public institutions of education (for K–12 and college) to solve a growing social problem. Many policy makers seem to think that teachers/schools are the primary cause of low achievement. Educational institutions still cannot solve a non-education-caused problem and haven’t done so for over fifty years despite all the public and private money that has been allocated. The book concludes with suggested policies for addressing the damage to public education from “gap-closing” standards and with suggested areas for policy making in order to change the current course of failure for many low-achieving students.

Book My Second First Year

Download or read book My Second First Year written by Joseph R. Jones and published by IAP. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Jones returned to the high school classroom after 15 years in higher education, most recently as an Associate Dean. This text chronicles his journey into his new teaching career. The premise of the text is framed on the attributes of a relational pedagogy. As such, the book discusses the relationships that Dr. Jones developed throughout the academic year. In this capacity, relational pedagogy allows the reader a unique lens through which to view the schooling process in this metropolitan southern town. In the book, Jones examines topics such as standardized testing, racism, sexuality, cheating, among other topics, through a critical theory paradigm. In doing so, Jones is able to interweave theoretical concepts within the daily actions of the schooling process. As such, the text is a unique reconceptualization of schools and the purpose of schools. Praise for My Second First Year: "In My Second First Year, Dr. Jones discusses his experiences leaving academia and returning to a high school English classroom, a daunting task that few academics would attempt. As a biologist and without affiliation with a teacher preparation program, I can attest to the importance of Jones’ work. This text illuminates the educational process for millions of children, which allows those of us not in the daily trenches of teaching K-12 students to experience the reality of our educational process. His discussions of school shootings, testing, and marginalization of students can become a catalyst that causes everyone in society to begin reexamining how we educate our children. Jones’ book could become the commencement point for educational reform." Linda Hensel, PhD Mercer University "In My Second First Year, Dr. Jones discusses his journey leaving higher education to return to a high school classroom. His powerful depictions of the realities of standardized testing, school shootings, racism, sexuality, and other topics cause the reader to reflect on all aspects of how children are educated. His use of relational pedagogy as his framework reminds us of the importance of positive relationships in schools and society. This text is a must read for anyone who advocates for our children." Nila Burt, EdS Assistant Principal Northside High School Georgia "Many of the stories in My Second First Year will be familiar to many teachers working in American PK-12 public schools as they will be similar to their own experiences. Dr. Jones takes us on a journey that many of us in academia would be apprehensive to take. By providing example after example, he demonstrates the significance of relational pedagogy and how it can increase the likelihood of student success. In this climate of student-to-college discourse, Jones provides evidence on how positive relations between teacher and students benefit all students regardless of post-secondary plans. This is significant for at the end of the day, the goal of schooling is about more than whether or not our students find employment. It is more important that students grow into caring, lifelong learners who can find happiness regardless of occupational goals. Jones reminds us all why we became teachers in the first place and—for many—why many teachers choose to stay in the profession." Vincent Youngbauer, PhD Mercer University

Book Combating the Achievement Gap

Download or read book Combating the Achievement Gap written by Teresa Hill and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite 30 years of school reform, the achievement gap between African American students, Latino students, students in poverty and white middle class students persists. Too often, well-meaning teachers, leaders and policymakers inadvertently contribute to the perpetuation of the achievement gap through daily practices. Teresa D. Hill, a practitioner with experience as a teacher and leader in diverse schools, examines the structures, messages, attitudes and beliefs in schools that perpetuate the idea that failure is a default for African American, Latino, and low-income students. She then discusses the practical actions that educators and leaders can take to end failure as a default in their schools. Combatting the Achievement Gap empowers educators and leaders to make meaningful change in the educational outcomes of African American, Latino, and low-income children by addressing structures, messages, attitudes and beliefs that are within educators’ sphere of influence. It will be of interest to school and district leaders, teachers, and policymakers seeking to address the achievement gap as well as teacher educators and researchers with an interest in education and social justice.

Download or read book Defying Jim Crow written by Donald E. DeVore and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the earliest days of Jim Crow, African Americans in New Orleans rallied around the belief that the new system of racially biased laws, designed to relegate them to second-class citizenship, was neither legitimate nor permanent. Drawing on shared memories of fluid race relations and post-Civil War political participation, they remained committed to a disciplined and sustained pursuit of equality. Defying Jim Crow tells the story of this community's decades-long struggle against segregation, disenfranchisement, and racial violence. Amid mounting violence and increasing exclusion, black New Orleanians believed their best defense depended upon maintaining a close-knit and politically engaged community. Donald E. DeVore's peerless research shows how African Americans sought to reverse the trends of oppression by prioritizing the kind of capacity building-investment in education, participation in national organizations, and a spirit of entrepreneurship in markets not dominated by white businessmen-that would ensure the community's ability to keep fighting for their rights in the face of setbacks and hostility from the city's white leaders. As some black activists worked to attain equity within the "separate but equal" framework, they provided a firm foundation and crucial support for more overt challenges to the racist government structures. The result of over a decade's research into the history of civil rights and community building in New Orleans, Defying Jim Crow provides a thorough and insightful analysis of race relations in one of America's most diverse cities and offers a vital contribution to the complex history of the African American struggle for freedom.

Book The First Year Urban High School Teacher

Download or read book The First Year Urban High School Teacher written by Carl Weinberg and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2008-03-13 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First-Year Urban High School Teacher: Holding the Torch, Lighting the Fire tracks co-author Paul Weinberg during his first year of teaching as he is introduced to the daily tribulations of an urban Los Angeles high school. Paul's father, Carl Weinberg, who fifty years earlier himself began his career in education as an urban secondary school teacher, shares his experiences side-by-side with those of his son. Together they reveal parallels between Carl's former problems in the urban classroom and the problems his son faces. Though some things have changed, there have not been nearly as many changes as one would have hoped. Interwoven with the father-son anecdotes of personal experience in teaching is a careful scholarly examination of the areas of social and cultural disorganization that the new teacher confronts with students, teachers, administrators, policy makers, and parents as he or she navigates through the behemoth of urban schooling.
