Download or read book Africa What It Gave Me What It Took from Me written by Margarethe von Eckenbrecher and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa: What It Gave Me, What It Took from Me is a memoir of an extraordinary woman who, as a newlywed, travelled with her husband to German South West Africa, a colony situated just above South African on the Atlantic coast. Here they begin a farm in a quite remote area where they raise cattle, sheep, and goats and plant large gardens on the banks of the Omaruru River. They build a comfortable home and welcome their first child. As the von Eckenbrechers work hard to build, their farm natives, whose land has been appropriated by the colonial government, are planning a revolt against colonial rule. Insurrection begins and the von Eckenbrechers are in the midst of it all. As the rebellion strengthens, Frau von Eckenbrecher returns to Germany to wait out the insurrection. Her husband eventually returns as well. Frau von Eckenbrecher never feels completely at home again in Germany. The von Eckenbrechers divorce and Frau von Eckenbrecher returns to South West Africa with her two sons. Her former husband emigrates to Paraguay. Frau von Eckenbrecher eventually takes a position in a German language school in Windhoek, the capital city, and rears her two sons there. In her book she chronicles colonial life, the natives of the colony, how the Spanish Influenza pandemic raged in Namibia, World War I in Africa, German surrender, and the South African occupation of German South West Africa and the eventual ceding of the colony to South Africa. The editors bring the memoir to a close with an update of Frau von Eckenbrecher’s later life and death, and a short remembrance from one of her two grandsons.

Book Africa and My New Beginning

Download or read book Africa and My New Beginning written by Clyde Ann Nelson and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My trip to Ghana, Africa was more than I expected. This is a good time to remember the trip that saved my life and gave me my freedom. It all started when I put my feet on African soul for the first time in my life. The soil felt good under my feet and the smell of the elements overwhelmed me. I began to cry, but I knew in my heart I was home at last. The day came for me to visit the slave castles after many days of touring Ghana. The weather was hot, and my body felt numb and chilled. The blood was draining from my body; my hands began to tingle and my feet felt heavy as I walked into this rock-like cave. The cave featured a small hole for air and gave off a dim light. It was musky inside and I felt as if I was going to faint. I listened silently as the tour guide described the people who once lived in this dungeon. The people were small in size and tortured daily in every way possible. A feeling of sadness overwhelmed my body, and I lost my sense of understanding. I was standing in the sewage of my history and the worst thing life could ever offer me. I could feel their blood running through my veins as death was near. Just before I lost consciousness I heard a voice. For a moment I thought, "am I going crazy"? The voice said, "don't be sad, be happy we have survived this journey and you are here to tell our story". These words of wisdom gave me the understanding that the journey my forefathers and mothers took were in God's plans. Suddenly, a cool breeze circled my body, and a warm gentle force lifted me out of the slave castle. I was floating in mid-air while my spirit was being renewed. I cried many tears because of the ill treatment I suffered in the United States as an African-American. But this day my soul was free and the African drums were beating for joy once again. I was home at last. This was truly a time to remember. I found that the lives of Black people in the United States are a profound contrast between the lives of Black People in Africa. My pilgrimage to the West African nations of Ghana and the Ivory Coast ultimately fulfilled a lifelong desire full of excitement, discovery and to an extent closure.

Book Singing Away the Hunger

Download or read book Singing Away the Hunger written by Mpho ‘M’atsepo Nthunya and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1997-10-22 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ". . . this gem of a book deserves a wide audience. Appropriate for African and women's studies courses and a must for college and university libraries." —Choice ". . . Mpho relates the story of her life with an integrity that makes for utterly compelling reading. . . . The fortitude of this woman, now in her late 60s, is a lesson to us all." —The Bookseller, United Kingdom "This is a fascinating autobiography . . ." —KLIATT ". . . a powerful autobiography of a Lesotho elder who tells her life as an African woman in South Africa. The focus on black culture and concerns as much as racism allows for an unusual depth of understanding of black concerns and lifestyles in Africa." —Reviewer's Bookwatch "An African woman's poignant and beautifully crafted memoir lyrically portrays the brutal poverty and reliance on ritual that shape the lives of her people, the Basotho. . . . A commanding and important work that will captivate readers with its unique voice, narrative power, and unforgettable scenes of life in Southern Africa." —Kirkus Reviews " . . . a stunning autobiography of a remarkable woman . . . Nthunya's telling is eloquent. Although her voice is generally one of dignified emotional distance, it is punctuated by her very human humor and pain." —Publishers Weekly ". . . recommended for collections in African folklore." —Library Journal "I am telling my stories in English for many months now, and it is a time for me to see my whole life. I see that things are always changing. I was born in 1930, so I remember many things which were happening in the old days in Lesotho and which happen no more. I lived in Benoni Location for more than ten years, and I saw the Boer policemen taking black people and beating them like dogs. They even took me once, and kept me in one of their jails for a while." —Mpho 'M'atsepo Nthunya A compelling and unique autobiography by an African woman with little formal education, less privilege, and almost no experience of books or writing. Mpho's is a voice almost never heard in literature or history, a voice from within the struggle of "ordinary" African women to negotiate a world which incorporates ancient pastoral ways and the congestion, brutality, and racist violence of city life. It is also the voice of a born storyteller who has a subject worthy of her gifts—a story for all the world to hear.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1870 barely one tenth of Africa was under European control. By 1914 only about one tenth – Abyssinia (Ethiopia) and Liberia – was not. This book offers a clear and concise account of the ‘scramble’ or ‘race’ for Africa, the period of around 20 years during which European powers carved up the continent with little or no consultation of its inhabitants. In her classic overview, M.E. Chamberlain: Contrasts the Victorian image of Africa with what we now know of African civilisation and history Examines in detail case histories from Egypt to Zimbabwe Argues that the history and background of Africa are as important as European politics and diplomacy in understanding the 'scramble' Considers the historiography of the topic, taking into account Marxist and anti-Marxist, financial, economic, political and strategic theories of European imperialism This indispensible introduction, now in a fully updated third edition, provides the most accessible survey of the ‘scramble for Africa’ currently available. The new edition includes primary source material unpublished elsewhere, new illustrations and additional pedagogical features. It is the perfect starting point for any study of this period in African history.

Book ACCIDENTAL AFRICAN BLESSINGS

Download or read book ACCIDENTAL AFRICAN BLESSINGS written by Ugo Nacciarone, SJ. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I pondered on a title for this book, I thought about my first life and work experience in Africa. How I suffered several severe cases of malaria, how difficult it was to adjust to the hot humid climate and the discouragements from my relatives and friends back home that I was in a wrong place to which I almost succumbed. The only thing that made me stay was a sense of duty to the other five Jesuits working with me. As this mission was only new I did not want to demoralize any of them. This decision has later proven to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. All that experience brought many turns to my life in Africa, bringing me from Nigeria to Zambia to Ghana and back to Zambia again. These events were like accidents. Accidents are unexpected, unplanned and often painful. It was just an accident of history that the mission was just getting started and that it bad so few people on it. It might have been another accident of history that the Biafran War began just as I made my way to Nigeria that made it more difficult to recruit new members to the mission.. These accidents of history brought me to a painful decision to return to Nigeria when I didn't feel attracted to the prospect. Yet, this painful experience turned out to be a great blessing for me. I came to love the people and the continent more than I could ever have imagined, and found myself greatly enriched by the experience. It is this development in personal growth that I want to share with the reader. Cover Design by Danny Chiyesu

Book Don t Africa Me

Download or read book Don t Africa Me written by C. P. Eze and published by Expertz in PRINT. This book was released on 2008-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You too can say no to the popular (and profitable) art of hurting Africa from afar!Notable magazines like New African and Ode gave it full page coverage. Radio and TV shows showcased it and readers emailed and phoned to agree or disagree with Don t Africa Me. Diplomats discussed what the author, C. Paschal Eze, calls the PIDIC syndrome which explains how Brand Africa largely connotes poverty, instability, disease, illiteracy and corruption. Event organizers invited him to speak on the subject of the book just as individuals considering doing business in African countries reached him in Iowa for advice. Don t Africa Me takes on those waging geo-branding war against Africa, including those African immigrants who talk down Africa and threaten to send their misbehaving kids back to Africa thus grooming a generation indifferent to the continent. Others are pop stars and Hollywood celebrities using Africa to reposition and push their brands, the news media using images of Ugandan child soldiers and Kenyan scavengers to sing pity and pittance choruses that have continued to bruise and batter African countries, and global nonprofits that prey on poverty, denigrating the poor and deifying donors while committing most of the donations they get to high overhead and administrative costs. And while African governments obsess with elitist photo-op diplomacy that has mostly benefited lobbyists and PR firms, the author points to what he calls Chinese lifestyle diplomacy that has helped to make the once dreaded "communist" China the darling of the average consumer, very visible in boardrooms, ballrooms and bedrooms through its ubiquitous consumer products, dollar stores, karate clubs, Confucius institutes, buffet restaurants. Aided by the savvy Chinese Diaspora, they created both the need and the outlet for Chinese goods and services in a world where others see and appreciate you through the lens of your products and services they consume, posits Eze.

Book Fifty Years in Chains

Download or read book Fifty Years in Chains written by Charles Ball and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My story is a true one, and I shall tell it in a simple style. It will be merely a recital of my life as a slave in the Southern States of the Union—a description of negro slavery in the "model Republic."My grandfather was brought from Africa and sold as a slave in Calvert county, in Maryland. I never understood the name of the ship in which he was imported, nor the name of the planter who bought him on his arrival, but at the time I knew him he was a slave in a family called Maud, who resided near Leonardtown. My father was a slave in a family named Hauty, living near the same place. My mother was the slave of a tobacco planter, who died when I was about four years old. My mother had several children, and they were sold upon master's death to separate purchasers. She was sold, my father told me, to a Georgia trader. I, of all her children, was the only one left in Maryland. When sold I was naked, never having had on clothes in my life, but my new master gave me a child's frock, belonging to one of his own children. After he had purchased me, he dressed me in this garment, took me before him on his horse, and started home; but my poor mother, when she saw me leaving her for the last time, ran after me, took me down from the horse, clasped me in her arms, and wept loudly and bitterly over me. My master seemed to pity her, and endeavored to soothe her distress by telling her that he would be a good master to me, and that I should not want anything. She then, still holding me in her arms, walked along the road beside the horse as he moved slowly, and earnestly and imploringly besought my master to buy her and the rest of her children, and not permit them to be carried away by the negro buyers; but whilst thus entreating him to save her and her family, the slave-driver, who had first bought her, came running in pursuit of her with a raw-hide in his hand. When he overtook us, he told her he was her master now, and ordered her to give that little negro to its owner, and come back with him.
