Book Affect of Emission Controls on the Elemental Concentration and Particle Size of Coal Ash

Download or read book Affect of Emission Controls on the Elemental Concentration and Particle Size of Coal Ash written by Todd A. Praechter and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) was used to evaluate the elemental composition of ash samples collected from the baghouse, electro-static precipitator, and multi-cyclone separator at the steam generation plant at the University of Cincinnati. Twenty-seven individual quantifiable elements were found in the samples including samples of crushed coal. The concentrations of elements were reported according to sample type and classified into three groups: class 1 elements [Al, Fe, Hf, K, Mn, Ni, Ta, Tb, Th, and U] were those that were equally dispersed between fly and bottom ash, class 2 elements [Ba, Cr, Sb, Se, V, and Zn] were enriched in fly ash, class 3 elements [Ce, Cs, Co, Eu, Na, Rb, Sc, Ti, Yb, and Zr] were distributed randomly between class 1 and class 2 elements. Scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate the size of more than 2700 particles collected from the baghouse, electro-static precipitator and multi-cyclone as well as bottom ash. Particles from the electro-static precipitator exhibited the smallest average particle size [9 æm] followed by the baghouse [13 æm]. Elements collected by the electro-static precipitator included Ag, Cr, Sb, Se and V, which are among the smallest particles. However, particle size within the flue gas stream is greatly affected by the volatility of the element, so that the elemental composition of particles collected at different stages in the flue gas stream will vary based upon the type of engineering controls used to reduce emissions. Thus, samples of ash collected for nuclear forensics analysis to detect undisclosed processes involving nuclear and radiological materials will contain different elements depending upon the type of engineering controls used to reduce emissions.

Book The Impact Of Ash Deposition On Coal Fired Plants

Download or read book The Impact Of Ash Deposition On Coal Fired Plants written by Jim Williamson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-12 with total page 1103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal provides almost 40% of the world's electricity, and despite the understandable concern with respect to the environmental impact associated with coal use, forecasts from the International Energy Agency predict, that worldwide coal use will increase by up to 2% per annum until the year 2OlO. Faced with this increase, it is clearly important that the most efficient and environmentally acceptable clean coal technologies are available. This book is comprised of the proceedings of the Engineering Foundation Conference held in June 1993 in England. The objective of the conference was to present ideas on methods of predicting and reducing the effects of ash deposition in coal conversion systems, highlighting the problems experienced in industry, considering both utilities and industrial plants, and providing a view of the technology of coal ash deposition and its impact. Better techniques are needed to reduce the impact of ash deposition in coal fired plants, and these proceedings should form a reference document for anyone either experiencing slagging or actively engaged in trying to understand or eliminate the phenomenon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute: (ASI) «Pollutants Formation from Combustion. Formation Mechanisms and Impact on th th Atmospheric Chemistry» held in Maratea, Italy, from 13 to 26 september 1998. Preservation of the environment is of increasing concern in individual countries but also at continental or world scales. The structure of a NATO ASI which involve lecturers and participants of different nationalities was thought as especially well suited to address environmental issues. As combustion is known to substantially contribute to the damaging of the atmosphere, it was natural to concentrate the ASI program on reviewing the currently available knowledge of the formation mechanisms of the main pollutants liberated by combustion systems. In most situations, pollutants are present as trace components and their formation and removal is strongly conditioned by the chemical reactions initiated by fuel consumption. Therefore specific lectures were aimed at defining precisely the general properties of combustion chemistry for gaseous, liquid and solid fuels. Physical factors can strongly affect the combustion chemistry and their influence was also considered. An interesting peculiarity of this specific ASI was to complement the program with a substantial part concerned with the impact of the main combustion pollutants: NOx, aromatics, soot, VOCs, sulphur and chlorinated compounds, on atmospheric chemistry.

Book Environmental Security and Environmental Management The Role of Risk Assessment

Download or read book Environmental Security and Environmental Management The Role of Risk Assessment written by Benoit Morel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-22 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of “environmental security” has emerged as one basis for understanding international conflicts. This phrase can mean a variety of things. It can signify security issues stemming from environmental concerns or conflicting needs, or it can mean that the environment is treated as a resource for the long term, and the question is what should be done today to preserve the quality of the environment in the future. In the same way that energy security is about ensuring access to energy for the long run, it can also mean that pressing environmental concerns create a situation where different countries and communities are forced to collaboratively design a unified response, even if cooperation is not generally in the logic of their relations. Over the last several years, the authors of this book and their colleagues have tried to demonstrate the power of risk assessment and decision analysis as valuable tools that decision makers should use for a broad range of environmental problems, including environmental security. Risk analysis is almost more a state of mind or a way of looking at problems than it is a kind of algorithm or a set of recipes. It projects a kind of rationality on problems and forces a certain degree of quantitative rigor, as opposed to the all too common tendency of making environmental recommendations based on anecdotal evidence.
