Book Parliaments and Parties in Egypt

Download or read book Parliaments and Parties in Egypt written by Jacob M. Landau and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt was the first Arabic-speaking country to throw off the yoke of Turkish rule, with an attendant growth in European influence. The impact of the West was most obvious in the political-constitutional field, with the gradual adoption of Western patterns of government and political life. This book, first published in 1953, is the first work to trace the development of parliamentary institutions and political parties in Egypt and to consider the extent of Western influence on their inception, evolution and disruption. Based on both Arabic and European sources, it is a comprehensive examination of the subject, and is key to the understanding of the development of the modern Middle East.

Book Islamic Law and Civil Code

Download or read book Islamic Law and Civil Code written by Richard A. Debs and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard A. Debs analyzes the classical Islamic law of property based on the Shari'ah, traces its historic development in Egypt, and describes its integration as a source of law within the modern format of a civil code. He focuses specifically on Egypt, a country in the Islamic world that drew upon its society's own vigorous legal system as it formed its modern laws. He also touches on issues that are common to all such societies that have adopted, either by choice or by necessity, Western legal systems. Egypt's unique synthesis of Western and traditional elements is the outcome of an effort to respond to national goals and requirements. Its traditional law, the Shari'ah, is the fundamental law of all Islamic societies, and Debs's analysis of Egypt's experience demonstrates how Islamic jurisprudence can be sophisticated, coherent, rational, and effective, developed over centuries to serve the needs of societies that flourished under the rule of law.

Book Jews in Nineteenth Century Egypt

Download or read book Jews in Nineteenth Century Egypt written by Jacob M. Landau and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although nineteenth-century Egyptian Jewry was an active and creative part of society, this work from 1969 is the main comprehensive work devoted to an analysis and appraisal of its activities. The period under review commences with the fall of the Mamluk regime in Egypt, and the incipient modernization of the state, with the resulting increase in Jewish activity. It terminates with the end of World War I and the new era in the history of modern Egypt, an era of extreme nationalism that led to the undermining of the Jewish community.

Book Egypt After Mubarak

  • Author : Bruce K. Rutherford
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2008-12-14
  • ISBN : 0691136653
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Egypt After Mubarak written by Bruce K. Rutherford and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-12-14 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt's autocratic regime is being weakened by economic crises, growing political opposition, and the pressures of globalization. Observers now wonder which way Egypt will go when the country's aging president, Husni Mubarak, passes from the scene: will it embrace Western-style liberalism and democracy? Or will it become an Islamic theocracy similar to Iran? Egypt after Mubarak demonstrates that both secular and Islamist opponents of the regime are navigating a middle path that may result in a uniquely Islamic form of liberalism and, perhaps, democracy. Bruce Rutherford examines the political and ideological battles that drive Egyptian politics and shape the prospects for democracy throughout the region. He argues that secularists and Islamists are converging around a reform agenda that supports key elements of liberalism, including constraints on state power, the rule of law, and protection of some civil and political rights. But will this deepening liberalism lead to democracy? And what can the United States do to see that it does? In answering these questions, Rutherford shows that Egypt's reformers are reluctant to expand the public's role in politics. This suggests that, while liberalism is likely to progress steadily in the future, democracy's advance will be slow and uneven. Essential reading on a subject of global importance, Egypt after Mubarak draws upon in-depth interviews with Egyptian judges, lawyers, Islamic activists, politicians, and businesspeople. It also utilizes major court rulings, political documents of the Muslim Brotherhood, and the writings of Egypt's leading contemporary Islamic thinkers.

Book Businessmen Clientelism and Authoritarianism in Egypt

Download or read book Businessmen Clientelism and Authoritarianism in Egypt written by Safinaz El Tarouty and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the ousting of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in February 2011, much debate surrounded the reasons for the former regime's longevity and its collapse. Here, Safinaz El Tarouty provides an original contribution to the study of authoritarianism in Egypt by focusing on the role of businessmen in authoritarian survival. As the regime intensified neoliberal economic reforms that led to social deprivation and frustration among increasing numbers of Egyptian citizens, they co-opted businessmen in order to defuse challenges and buttress the regime, constructing a new political economy of authoritarianism. Extending the existing literature on clientelism, El Tarouty creates a typology of regime-businessmen relations to describe the multiple mechanisms of co-option in the context of economic liberalization. Ultimately, though, these businessmen proved too narrow a constituency to provide legitimacy to the regime and, in fact, formed one of the reasons for its collapse.

Book State Practice Regarding State Immunities La Pratique des Etats concernant les Immunit s des Etats

Download or read book State Practice Regarding State Immunities La Pratique des Etats concernant les Immunit s des Etats written by Council of Europe/Conseil de l'Europe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 1067 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of the Council of Europe Pilot Project on State Practice Regarding State Immunities carried out under the auspices of the Committee of Legal Advisers on Public International Law (CAHDI) since 2002. It presents and analyses the material submitted by 27 Member States and one Observer State of the Council of Europe, including decisions of national courts, relevant legislation and other documents. The analytical report was undertaken by the Department of European, International and Comparative Law of the University of Vienna, the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and the Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva. It compares State practice with the relevant articles of the UN Convention, the European Convention on State Immunity and the draft articles prepared by academic institutions. It is the first in depth-analysis of European State practice in the field of State immunity. Such a broad analysis is essential, in particular for the ascertainment of customary international law. This book is addressed to officials, practitioners engaged in business relations with foreign States, and academics.
