Book excerpt: The Agamemnon is the first play of the Oresteia trilogy, which won Aeschylus a first prize in 458 BCE. It presents the return of Agamemnon to his home in Argos after the fall of Troy, as his victorious homecoming soon gives way to the horrors of an ancient curse and the consequences of vengeance. With its accounts of war, sacrifice, confessions, prophecy, and prayer, this tragic drama begins both a brutal and compassionate journey toward redefining justice. Through the use of syllabic verse, this new version maintains an organic link with the original Greek text, while recreating the music of poetry in contemporary speech for reading and performance.

Book excerpt: Choephori Aeschylus - Also known as 'The Libation Bearers' this is the second play of Aeschylus' Oresteia trilogy. Many years after king Agamemnon's murder at the hands of his wife Clytamnestra and her lover Aigisthos, his son Orestes returns home with Pylades to mourn at his grave. He has been living in exile and has come back to Argos in secret; his mission is to avenge Agamemnon's death.Orestes arrives at the grave of his father, accompanied by his cousin Pylades, the son of the king of Phocis, where he has grown up in exile; he places two locks of his hair on the tomb. Orestes and Pylades hide as Electra, Orestes' sister, arrives at the grave accompanied by a chorus of elderly slave women (the libation bearers of the title) to pour libations on Agamemnon's grave; they have been sent by Clytemnestra in an effort to ward off harm. Just as the ritual ends, Electra spots a lock of hair on the tomb which she recognizes as similar to her own; subsequently she sees two sets of footprints, one of which has proportions similar to hers. At this point Orestes and Pylades emerge from their hiding place and Orestes gradually convinces her of his identity.

Book The Complete Aeschylus

Download or read book The Complete Aeschylus written by Aeschylus and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the conviction that only translators who write poetry themselves can properly re-create the celebrated and timeless tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, the Greek Tragedy in New Translations series offers new translations that go beyond the literal meaning of the Greek in order to evoke the poetry of the originals. Aeschylus' Oresteia, the only ancient tragic trilogy to survive, is one of the great foundational texts of Western culture. It begins with Agamemnon, which describes Agamemnon's return from the Trojan War and his murder at the hands of his wife Clytemnestra, continues with her murder by their son Orestes in Libation Bearers, and concludes with Orestes' acquittal at a court founded by Athena in Eumenides. The trilogy thus traces the evolution of justice in human society from blood vengeance to the rule of law, Aeschylus' contribution to a Greek legend steeped in murder, adultery, human sacrifice, cannibalism, and endless intrigue. This new translation is faithful to the strangeness of the original Greek and to its enduring human truth, expressed in language remarkable for poetic intensity, rich metaphorical texture, and a verbal density that modulates at times into powerful simplicity. The translation's precise but complicated rhythms honor the music of the Greek, bringing into unforgettable English the Aeschylean vision of a world fraught with spiritual and political tensions.
