Book excerpt: The first International Symposium on Unsteady Aerodynamics and Aero elasticity of Turbomachines was held in Paris in 1976, and was followed by symposia at Lausanne in 1980, Cambridge in 1984, Aachen in 1987, Bei jing in 1989, and Notre Dame in 1991. The proceedings published following these symposia have become recognized both as basic reference texts in the subject area and as useful guides to progress in the field. It is hoped that this volume, which represents the proceedings of the Sixth International Symposium on Unsteady Aerodynamics of Turbomachines, will continue that tradition. Interest in the unsteady aerodynamics, aeroacoustics, and aeroelasticity of turbomachines has been growing rapidly since the Paris symposium. This expanded interest is reflected by a significant increase in the numbers of contributed papers and symposium participants. The timeliness of the topics has always been an essential objective of these symposia. Another important objective is to promote an international exchange between scien tists and engineers from universities, government agencies, and industry on the fascinating phenomena of unsteady turbomachine flows and how they affect the aeroelastic stability of the blading system and cause the radiation of unwanted noise. Book excerpt: A summary is made of the state of the art of propeller-whirl flutter -- a precession-type instability that can occur on a flexibly mounted aircraft engine-propeller combination. This report reviews the literature relating to this problem from the time it first became of concern on conventional turboprop and V/STOL aircraft. Included in the survey are a description of the basic mechanism of whirl flutter, a summary of generalized trend studies on idealized systems, the status of methods for predicting propeller aerodynamic coefficients, the effects of flapping hinged blades and twisted flexible blades on whirl flutter, and some approaches for including propeller whirl modes as a part of the flutter evaluation for complete aircraft. Also, brief consideration is given to the response of flexibly mounted propeller-nacelle systems to random atmospheric turbulence. Whirl flutter of conventional propeller-nacelle systems is now a reasonably well understood phenomenon and amenable to analysis. For propeller-rotor systems with flapping blades, however, comparisons between experiment and theory suggest the need for further refinements in the mathematical model.

Book excerpt: Advanced high-speed propellers offer large performance improvements for aircraft that cruise in the Mach 0.7 to 0.8 speed regime. The current status of the NASA research program on high-speed propeller aerodynamics, acoustics, and aeroelastics is described. Recent wind tunnel results for five 8- to 10-blade advanced models are compared with analytical predictions. Test results show that blade sweep was important in achieving net efficiencies near 80 percent at Mach 0.8 and reducing near-field cruise noise by dB. Lifting line and lifting surface aerodynamic analysis codes are under development and some initial lifting line results are compared with propeller force and probe data. Some initial laser velocimeter measurements of the flow field velocities of an 8-bladed 45 deg swept propeller are shown. Experimental aeroelastic results indicate that cascade effects and blade sweep strongly affect propeller aeroelastic characteristics. Comparisons of propeller near-field noise data with linear acoustic theory indicate that the theory adequate predicts near-field noise for subsonic tip speeds but overpredicts the noise for supersonic tip speeds. Potential large gains in propeller efficiency of 7 to 11 percent at Mach 0.8 may be possible with advanced counter-rotation propellers. Mitchell, G. A. and Mikkelson, D. C.
