Book excerpt: The Adventures of Pinocchio is a novel for children by Italian author Carlo Collodi, written in Pescia. It is about the mischievous adventures of an animated marionette named Pinocchio and his father, a poor woodcarver named Geppetto. It was originally published in serial form as The Story of a Puppet (Italian: La storia di un burattino) in the Giornale per i bambini, one of the earliest Italian weekly magazines for children, starting from 7 July 1881. The story stopped after nearly 4 months and 8 episodes at Chapter 15, but by popular demand from readers, the episodes were resumed on 16 February 1882. In February 1883, the story was published in a single book. Since then, the spread of Pinocchio on the main markets for children's books of the time has been continuous and uninterrupted, and it was met with enthusiastic reviews worldwide. A universal icon and a metaphor of the human condition, the book is considered a canonical piece of children's literature and has had a great impact on world culture. Philosopher Benedetto Croce reputed it as one of the greatest works of Italian literature. Since its first publication, it has inspired hundreds of new editions, stage plays, merchandising, television series and movies, such as Walt Disney's iconic animated version, and commonplace ideas such as a liar's long nose. The book has been translated between 260 (according to extensive research done by the Fondazione Nazionale Carlo Collodi and based on UNESCO sources in the late 1990s) and over 300 languages worldwide. That makes it the most translated non-religious book in the world. While the total sales since its first publication are unknown because of the many public domain re-releases begun in 1940, some sources stated that the book has sold over 80 million copies in recent years, making it one of the best-selling books ever published. According to Francelia Butler, it remains "the most translated Italian book and, after the Bible, the most widely read".

The Adventures of Pinocchio is a story about an animated puppet, talking crickets, boys who turn into donkeys and other fairy tale devices that would be familiar to a reader of Alice in Wonderland or Brothers Grimm; in fact earlier in his career Collodi worked on a translation of Mother Goose. However, Pinocchio's world is not a traditional fairy-tale world, instead containing the hard realities of the need for food, shelter, and the basic measures of daily life. The setting of the story is in fact the very real Tuscan area of Italy. It was a unique literary melding of genres for its time.

Book The Adventures of Pinocchio

Download or read book The Adventures of Pinocchio written by C. Collodi and published by Top Five Books LLC. This book was released on 2023-06-13 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Top Five Classics edition of Pinocchio by C. Collodi features more than 280 color illustrations by Attilio Mussino, the unabridged text of the original Italian text translated into English, and a brief bio of the author. The Adventures of Pinocchio by C. Collodi (the pen name of Carlo Lorenzini) was first published in book form in 1883 in Florence, Italy, after its successful serialization in the weekly Giornale per i Bambini from July 1881 to January 1883. The story of an enchanted marionette who yearns to be a real boy, Pinocchio was an immediate sensation and has never gone out of print, having been translated into hundreds of languages and adapted to the stage and screen countless times. In 1911 the Italian artist Attilio Mussino created his beautiful, striking, and iconic illustrations for the first color edition of Pinocchio of Collodi's immortal work. The text, translated by Carol Della Chiesa for the 1925 American edition, is not the Disney version, but a universal moral parable for children that reflects its Italian heritage and the author’s satiric sense of humor, as well as the darkness and magic that are an integral part of all classic fairy tales.
