Book Adventures of a Younger Son Classic Reprint

Download or read book Adventures of a Younger Son Classic Reprint written by Edward John Trelawny and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures of a Younger Son For the first twenty years of Trelawny's life there is no authority but the "Younger Son." How far the book is "history," and how far romance, must therefore be considered. It is most likely from the internal evidence, that Trelawny began with the intention of writing his life, that as he progressed he found that a little fiction set off the facts to great advantage, and that, towards the end, the book becomes less and less of the life, and more and more of the romance. The Younger Son is an excellent stage hero by the finish; he meets and overcomes all odds; it is truly a glorious Trelawny, the Trelawny of his own imagination. But the account of his boyhood has a very real air, and if it is accepted, we see him as a self-willed, passionate boy, whose bad bringing-up developed his faults and hardened his character. At the age of twelve he went to sea on board the Superb, having the ill-fortune to miss the battle of Trafalgar through Admiral Duckworth delaying three days at Plymouth to get in mutton and potatoes. From his own account Trelawny would have us believe that he was then transferred to a sloop of war, and that as a midshipman on board her, he visited "the four quarters of the world," the voyage lasting eighteen months. But there is a document now in the possession of his family which shows that he never held warrant or commission in the navy. If we take it that he joined a merchantman, and that at length, sick of discipline, he joined a privateer cruising in the Indian seas, we shall perhaps be near the truth. The account of his next three years is still more open to doubt. That he led an adventurous life after deserting his ship is evident from the force and fire with which he sets forth his adventures; that he coloured, rearranged, and intensified these adventures is equally self-evident. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures of a Younger Son, Vol. 2 I awaited his return with impatience, but when he came, my impatience was left unsatisfied; for he was to meet the merchants in the evening. Next day brought the same story, and so on for many days. I loathe the tardy transactions of these grovelling serpents. I hate arithmetical calculations they do more mischief than earthquakes in destroying badly founded fabrics they are like a mameluke's bit to a fiery and impatient horse. I was, however, like the horse, compelled to submission. Much time was thus wantonly wasted ere De Ruyter had concluded arrangements to pay, instead of receiving, certain sums, and give securities, and enter into certain bonds, and sign deeds, all preliminary to retaining pos session of the schooner. However, it was accomplished and, in less than a month after his arrival, I was in stalled in my heart's desire. Aided by De Ruyter, I set about refitting the schooner for sea. Whilst at work on board, Zela stayed with me. We all made occasional holidays at the villa, which was left in charge of Aston. When the grab and schooner were ready for sea, De Ruyter gave me his instructions. In company we weighed our anchors. De Ruyter had pretty well recovered the use of his hand. The Americans, who had been left on board, and the four English sailors, taken with Aston, had entered voluntarily to serve on board the schooner. My crew had been completed by De Ruyter, and was a tolerably good one. I was armed with six twelve-pound carronades, and four long six pounders. We had provisions and water for ten weeks. Zela, whom nothing but force could have induced to remain behind, and that I had no inclination to essay, was with me. Thus, with all my wishes gratified, my joy was boundless as the element on which I floated; and I thought it would be as everlasting - thanks to my being no arithmetician, and not being gifted with the pre science even of an hour. Accursed foresight! Which turns enjoyment into misery by calculating on what is to ensue! I never did so but went to sea with an exulting heart, fearless and free as the lion, when he leaves his lair in the jungles to hunt on the plains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Second Son: A Novel His three sons wereroger, Edmund, and Stephen. The eldest son, notwithstanding the power of disinheritance which was in his father's hands, had been brought up as eldest sons usually are, without any alarm as to his future, or idea that under any possi bility he could be displaced from his natural position. He had been in the Guards in his youth, and had passed that blossoming portion of his existence without any discredit, if also without any special use. He had withdrawn, however, from a life somewhat too expensive for his allowance and circumstances some years before the beginning of this history, and, with occasional absences for pleasure or adventure, lived at home, managing as much of the business of the estate as his father permitted to pass out of his own hands, looking after the stables, hunting a little, and finding enough to occupy him in that busy idleness of country life which is so seductive and looks so much like important work when the deer of it has nothing else to do. Roger was not, however, ignor ant Of what men have to do in regions where existence is less easy. He had been, as people say, a great deal about the world. He had taken that round which, to young men of the present day, stands in the place of the grand tour which their forefathers took with more or less advantage in the way of culture and art. He had been all over America, he was still part owner of a Californian ranche, he had touched at Japan, and he knew familiarly many a place which, a generation ago, only sailors by profession or merchants' clerks knew anything about. How much good all these varied experi emees had done him it would be hard to say, but they had at least contributed with many other influences to form the man.
