Book Adventures in Human Being

Download or read book Adventures in Human Being written by Gavin Francis and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunday Times bestseller We have a lifetime's association with our bodies, but for many of us they remain uncharted territory. In Adventures in Human Being, Gavin Francis leads the reader on a journey through health and illness, offering insights on everything from the ribbed surface of the brain to the secret workings of the heart and the womb; from the pulse of life at the wrist to the unique engineering of the foot. Drawing on his own experiences as a doctor and GP, he blends first-hand case studies with reflections on the way the body has been imagined and portrayed over the millennia. If the body is a foreign country, then to practise medicine is to explore new territory: Francis leads the reader on an adventure through what it means to be human. Both a user's guide to the body and a celebration of its elegance, this book will transform the way you think about being alive, whether in sickness or in health. Book excerpt: By New Yorker and Atlantic writer Carl Elliott, a readable and even funny account of the serious business of medicine. A tongue-in-cheek account of the changes that have transformed medicine into big business. Physician and medical ethicist Carl Elliott tracks the new world of commercialized medicine from start to finish, introducing the professional guinea pigs, ghostwriters, thought leaders, drug reps, public relations pros, and even medical ethicists who use medicine for (sometimes huge) financial gain. Along the way, he uncovers the cost to patients lost in a health-care universe centered around consumerism.

Book The Furtherance of Medical Research

Download or read book The Furtherance of Medical Research written by Alan Gregg and published by Terry Lectures. This book was released on 1941 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Director for the Medical Sciences at the Rockefeller Foundation tells in this book what medical research is, what the universities and foundations have done and should do about it, and of the kind of man who works at the frontiers of the unknown in order to push back the curtains of darkness at least a little in the endless search for truth. Dr. Gregg candidly discusses some of the shortcomings of the foundations and their methods, the obstacles to their and the universities' doing their job properly, the booby traps and temptations that like in their way. But here at firsthand is an account of the men of good will, with none of the sanctimoniousness that has often characterized philanthropic endeavors, of men who critically, earnestly, doggedly, and intelligently have labored in the heat of the day and from whose minds will come the advances of the future. "This short book is addressed to the entire medical profession, to the medical student, to the student who contemplates entering medicine, and to many in the allied and basic sciences. It should be read by any who evince or profess an interest in medical research."--Journal of the American Medical Association

Book Research Training in Psychiatry Residency

Download or read book Research Training in Psychiatry Residency written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-01-23 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of psychiatric researchers does not seem to be keeping pace with the needs and opportunities that exist in brain and behavioral medicine. An Institute of Medicine committee conducted a broad review of the state of patient-oriented research training in the context of the psychiatry residency and considered the obstacles to such training and strategies for overcoming those obstacles. Careful consideration was given to the demands of clinical training. The committee concluded that barriers to research training span three categories: regulatory, institutional, and personal factors. Recommendations to address these issues are presented in the committee's report, including calling for research literacy requirements and research training curricula tailored to psychiatry residency programs of various sizes. The roles of senior investigators and departmental leadership are emphasized in the report, as is the importance of longitudinal training (e.g., from medical school through residency and fellowship). As there appears to be great interest among numerous stakeholders and a need for better tracking data, an overarching recommendation calls for the establishment of a national body to coordinate and evaluate the progress of research training in psychiatry.
