Book excerpt: At thirteen years old Tom and Emily Man had long since given up believing their Grandfathers stories of the magical land of Amaranth. If you were to ask them if they believed in witches, wizards and friendly trolls they'd both say "no". They definitely wouldn't believe in the most terrible and horrifying of all demons, even if he was mentioned in ancient manuscripts in their own world. And if you were to then throw kidnapping, stolen paintings, bloody battles and even a spot of big green romance into the mix and tell them they'd be involved in it all, they'd begin to think you an idiot, and Emily might even tell you as much. Ironically, as thirteen was the age of magical maturity, it was when they'd finally get to visit Amaranth - but they didn't believe. Luckily, getting to Amaranth involves being flung over the edge of a very high and very steep waterfall and believing has absolutely nothing to do with it. You can't help but believe when you're there. When you see it for yourself you believe everything. Amaranth is a 75,000 word story of adventure, mystery and friendship. It describes how events in this world have reverberations in another, and addresses the emotions and feelings that children experience wherever they may be. Primarily a young adult novel it is aimed at anyone else who doesn't believe...

Book excerpt: From new Australian author R Díaz, the first book in the Amarant series: Steve wished the chinkasqa would die, wished he could help Juana, and Tamya. Golden trails moved along the surface of his body, swarming along the enemy blade. The chinkasqa released the weapon in alarm, and there was an explosion as the blade disintegrated into a powdery ash. Steve focused again, lifted one hand off his own blade and reached out. Golden trails of dark energy streamed down his arm and started to cross the intervening space between him and the chinkasqa. Steve had not seen any of this coming. He had been hiking high in the Andes with Juana, some Germans, Brits and Kiwis, but that seemed like a lifetime ago. A group of four yachaq warriors had risked their lives reaching out across the void between stars. Steve and Juana had been pulled through a vortex and plunged headlong into a titanic struggle between Light and Shadow.

Book The Legend of Guy of Warwick

Download or read book The Legend of Guy of Warwick written by Velma Bourgeois Richmond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1996. This lavishly illustrated study is a comprehensive literary and social history which offers a record of changing genres, manuscript/book production, and cultural, political, and religious emphases by examining one of the most long lived popular legends in England. Guy of Warwick became part of history when he was named in chronicles and heraldic rolls. The power of the Earls of Warwick, especially Richard de Beauchamp, inspired the spread of the legend, but Guy's highest fame came in the Renaissance as one of the Nine Worthies. Widely praised in texts and allusions, Guy's feats were sung in ballads and celebrated on the stage in England and France. The first Anglo-Norman romance of Gui de Warewic, a Saxon hero of the tenth century was written in the early 13th century; the latest retellings of the legend are contemporary. Examples of Guy's legend can be found in two English translations that survived the Middle Ages, a new French prose romance, a didactic tale in the Gesta Romanorum, and late medieval versions in Celtic, German, and Catalan, as well as English. Guy remained a favorite Edwardian children's story and was featured in the Warwick Pageant, an historical extravaganza of 1906. The patriotism of World War II sparked a resurgence of interest that produced several new versions, mostly folkloric.

Book The Oxford Edition of Charles Dickens Nicholas Nickleby

Download or read book The Oxford Edition of Charles Dickens Nicholas Nickleby written by Charles Dickens and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-09 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicholas Nickleby, the second volume of the new Oxford Edition of Charles Dickens, is Dickens's third novel, originally published in monthly parts between March 1838 and September 1839. Brilliantly comic, the novel quickly developed a strong strand of social criticism, exploring themes such as love and family, selfishness, work, and charity. It showcases a host of characters, from the earnest and passionate young hero Nicholas, the pathetic Smike, and the brutal schoolmaster Wackford Squeers, to sparkling minor players like John Browdie, Mrs. Squeers, Mr. Mantalini, Mr. Crummles, and the infuriatingly inept Mrs. Nickleby. Solidifying the reputation for comedy and pathos Dickens had established with The Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist, this novel reached—and delighted—the widest audience Dickens had yet known. The manuscript of Nicholas Nickleby survives only in fragments, with the British Library, the Charles Dickens Museum, and The Rosenbach library holding substantial portions, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Free Library of Philadelphia, and the Morgan Library also holding pages. This edition is presented in two volumes: the text in Volume I and Essay on the Text and Notes in Volume 2. The editors have closely examined all the surviving manuscript, recovering scores of deletions and recording all variants of wording in the textual apparatus. The text is based on that of the original serial instalments; all emendations from that text are fully documented. All lifetime British editions (the Cheap, the Library, the Illustrated Library, the People's and the Charles Dickens) have been carefully collated, and all verbal variants are recorded.
