  • Author : Philip J. Ivanhoe

Download or read book The Oneness Hypothesis written by Philip J. Ivanhoe and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that the self is inextricably intertwined with the rest of the world—the “oneness hypothesis”—can be found in many of the world’s philosophical and religious traditions. Oneness provides ways to imagine and achieve a more expansive conception of the self as fundamentally connected with other people, creatures, and things. Such views present profound challenges to Western hyperindividualism and its excessive concern with self-interest and tendency toward self-centered behavior. This anthology presents a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary exploration of the nature and implications of the oneness hypothesis. While fundamentally inspired by East and South Asian traditions, in which such a view is often critical to their philosophical approach, this collection also draws upon religious studies, psychology, and Western philosophy, as well as sociology, evolutionary theory, and cognitive neuroscience. Contributors trace the oneness hypothesis through the works of East Asian and Western schools, including Confucianism, Mohism, Daoism, Buddhism, and Platonism and such thinkers as Zhuangzi, Kant, James, and Dewey. They intervene in debates over ethics, cultural difference, identity, group solidarity, and the positive and negative implications of metaphors of organic unity. Challenging dominant views that presume that the proper scope of the mind stops at the boundaries of skin and skull, The Oneness Hypothesis shows that a more relational conception of the self is not only consistent with contemporary science but has the potential to lead to greater happiness and well-being for both individuals and the larger wholes of which they are parts.

Book Advancing the Oneness of Humanity

Book excerpt: In Advancing the Oneness of Humanity: The Olympic Games Kiser Barnes takes us on an exhilarating journey to the heart of the Olympic spirit. This compelling narrative explores how Bahá'u'lláh's vision of the unity and oneness of humanity resonates with the Olympic Games through their shared emphasis on bringing together the diverse peoples of the world together, in a spirit of harmony and cooperation. His verse, 'The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens' - penned in 1882, only a few years before the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 - aligns with the mission of the Olympic movement to transcend national and cultural boundaries, fostering a global community united by the values of peace, friendship and mutual respect. Through vivid storytelling and insightful analysis, Barnes reveals the profound impact of the Olympics on global unity, inspiring generations to embrace these ideals. The Olympics serve as a platform where athletes from around the world come together, embodying the principle of human solidarity and demonstrating how vying with one another in the sports arena can coexist with camaraderie and understanding.

Download or read book The Divine Springtime written by Bahá'u'lláh and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-31 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the internet the telephone was the only way to instantaneously communicate. In rural areas especially, multiple parties shared a common line. Known as party lines, one could not make a call if someone else was using the line, but you could listen in on their conversation. In this remarkable tablet, translated from the Arabic by Shoghi Effendi, we have our own "party line" to listen in on a conversation God is having with Bahá'u'lláh. God addresses Bahá'u'lláh as the "Most Exalted Pen" for He is the Pen, the very instrument, by which Divine Revelation appears as the written Word of God. We overhear both sides of the dialogue as God lovingly but insistently draws Bahá'u'lláh away from all that binds Him to the created world. As Bahá'u'lláh is gradually made aware of the full import of His station as a Manifestation of God, so also, are we. .

Book From Polarisation to Multispecies Relationships

Download or read book From Polarisation to Multispecies Relationships written by Janet J. McIntyre-Mills and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the concept of multi-species relationships and suggests critical systemic pathways to protect shared habitats. This book discusses how the eradication of species as a result of rapid urbanisation places humanity at risk. This book demonstrates how narrow anthropocentrism has focused on the rights of human beings at the expense of other species and the environment. This book explores a priori norms and a posteriori measures and indicators to include and protect multiple species. This book aims to strengthen institutional capacity and powers to address and extend the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda by drawing on local wisdom but also the need to implement laws to prevent ecocide. This book highlights that our fragile interdependence requires a recognition of our hybridity and interconnectedness within the web of life and suggests ways to reframe policy within and beyond the nation state to support living systems of which we are a strand.

Book Preserving Oneness of Humanity

Download or read book Preserving Oneness of Humanity written by V M Gopaul and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-26 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racism, misogyny, and hate have dominated the headlines of our time. "Where is the love?" you might ask.As you may know, the claws of discrimination, division, and despair are ripping apart humanity. Enough is enough; many of us can't take it anymore. As the battle between disunity and inclusivity rages on around the globe, the scream for answers grows louder. Hence the birth of the Oneness Movement for Humanity happened.Globalization-one of the many faces of oneness-has been under severe attack around the world. Though unforeseen calamities batter unity, harmony, propelled by divine power, is our collective destiny.Oneness, the new frontier of our collective consciousness, promises greater inclusivity, harmony, and prosperity for all. We won't let discrimination rob us of our hope for a glorious future. It sounds utopian, but it is a goal worth exploring. Let's do it together.Prejudice of any kind is a sour issue loaded with controversy and stress. Thorny as it may be, we need collective action to address the subject. I believe it is within our intellectual, emotional, and spiritual capacities to solve this most pressing social ill. How wonderful would it be to re-create our social structure so that human harmony and peace can prevail? Is it not a long-cherished goal of humanity? To some, it may sound impossible to achieve. But if we give it some sober thought, we recall how challenging it was to land the first human on the moon or transplant a heart for the first time. True, obstacles are numerous in our individual and collective lives. But the human spirit is such that when we forge ahead on any social issue, we gain an understanding of our nature, and consequently, we will find solutions. Doing nothing is not an option. The human capacity is powerful. For example, Thomas Edison, the inventor, made a thousand unsuccessful attempts before he created the light bulb. He literally lit up the entire world.Unfortunately, government, social justice warriors, and charitable organizations don't put as much attention and resources into eradicating discrimination as they do for other ills such as cancer, diabetes, and poverty. In Anthropology News, E. Thompson wrote in a scholarly article, "A change in terminology is not going to fundamentally change all the conditions and impulses that accompany the horrors of race, ethnicity, nationalism and similar ideological schemes." What this means is that the concept of race is deeply embedded in our psyche, and swapping one word for another would not change much how humans treat each other. But re-creating internally will bring the change for which we all yearn. When it comes to harmony, I step beyond the peaceful existence of diverse groups. In the following chapters, I examine some of the fiercest forces of our time, such as Brexit, the border wall, populism, the #MeToo movement, tribalism, and so on. Then I present my answers. These forces are battering humanity with disruptions that will change the future. And they cause high anxiety in every corner of the globe. "One of the great revelations of the Space Age has been the perspective it has given humanity on ourselves. When we see the earth from space, we see ourselves as a whole. We see the unity and not the divisions. It is such a simple image with a compelling message. One planet. One human race." -Stephen Hawking, theoretical physicist, cosmologist and author."So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth." - Baha'u'llah.

Book excerpt: Official U.S. edition with full color illustrations throughout. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Yuval Noah Harari, author of the critically-acclaimed New York Times bestseller and international phenomenon Sapiens, returns with an equally original, compelling, and provocative book, turning his focus toward humanity’s future, and our quest to upgrade humans into gods. Over the past century humankind has managed to do the impossible and rein in famine, plague, and war. This may seem hard to accept, but, as Harari explains in his trademark style—thorough, yet riveting—famine, plague and war have been transformed from incomprehensible and uncontrollable forces of nature into manageable challenges. For the first time ever, more people die from eating too much than from eating too little; more people die from old age than from infectious diseases; and more people commit suicide than are killed by soldiers, terrorists and criminals put together. The average American is a thousand times more likely to die from binging at McDonalds than from being blown up by Al Qaeda. What then will replace famine, plague, and war at the top of the human agenda? As the self-made gods of planet earth, what destinies will we set ourselves, and which quests will we undertake? Homo Deus explores the projects, dreams and nightmares that will shape the twenty-first century—from overcoming death to creating artificial life. It asks the fundamental questions: Where do we go from here? And how will we protect this fragile world from our own destructive powers? This is the next stage of evolution. This is Homo Deus. With the same insight and clarity that made Sapiens an international hit and a New York Times bestseller, Harari maps out our future.

Book Human Values in a Changing World

Download or read book Human Values in a Changing World written by Bryan Wilson and published by I.B. Tauris. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a spontaneously wide-ranging conversation one winter evening in Japan, sociologist of religion Bryan Wilson and Buddhist philosopher Daisaku Ikeda recognized the importance of explaining and learning about their respective worldviews. "Human Values in a Changing World" is the record of their further exchanges on how they see the religious response to the human condition. Their contrasting approaches - one, as an academic, and the other, as a lay Buddhist - allow for a constructive critique of preconceptions otherwise unexamined in their own cultural contexts."There is an intimate connection between faith and the fruits of commitment," Wilson says at one point. To which Ikeda responds that while the benefits of faith to momentary happiness are perhaps not the core value of a religion, they can inspire and lead people to become aware of that core value or fundamental truth. The two men's observations on the origins of religious sensibilities move from the spiritual and the moral to the politics of private and public life. Although published some years ago, "Human Values in a Changing World" addresses topics and issues which are of perennial importance to human flourishing, including: sexual morality, the limits of tolerance and religious freedom, the future of the family, the belief in an afterlife, and the idea of sin.

Book Outlines of an Historical View of the Progress of the Human Mind

Download or read book Outlines of an Historical View of the Progress of the Human Mind written by Antoine-Nicholas Condorcet and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the last great work of the Enlightenment, this landmark in intellectual history is the Marquis de Condorcet's homage to the human future emancipated from its chains and led by the progress of reason and the establishment of liberty. Writing in 1794, while in hiding, under sentence of death from the Jacobins in revolutionary France, Condorcet surveys human history and speculates upon its future. With William Godwin, he is the chief foil of Malthus's Essay on Population. Portrayed by Malthus as an elate and giddy optimist, Condorcet foresees a future of indefinite progress. Freed from ignorance and superstition, he argues that the human race stands on the threshold of epochal progress and limitless improvement. Condorcet defies modernist stereotypes of the right and the left. He is at once precursor of the free market and social democracy. This new edition of the original 1795 English translation, is the only English translation of a work of Condorcet currently in print.
