Book excerpt: The increased prevalence of dry eye disease in the developed world along with elementary forms treatment has raised question to other causes and possible solutions to the underlying root of the condition. Dry eye disease can affect individuals of all ages but has been found to be more common in those over 65 years old. Approximately 1 in 7 (~14%) above 65 are diagnosed with dry eye disease and research has shown that the prevalence of this condition seems to double after the age of 59. Many factors can contribute to the diagnosis of dry eye disease such as preexisting systemic diseases, medications, and contact lens wear. Chronic dry eye disease can potentially damage the ocular surface and cause various forms visual disturbance. Previous forms of dry eye treatment have included multiple instillations of lubricating drops and other forms of lid hygiene. Other non-pharmacologic forms of controlling symptoms have included punctal occlusion, enviromental control, and even eyelid surgery. These treatments are palliative and usually do not address the underlying cause of the condition. Research has suggested that there is a strong link between inflammation and dry eye disease. Newer forms of dry eye treatment have focused on attacking inflammation as the source of the problem and results from these forms of treatments have been quite successful. This literature review serves to outline novel research evaluating the use of newly developed forms of non-steroidal dry eye therapy that address inflammation as the root of the underlying disease.
