Book excerpt: Statistical Physics provides an introduction to the basic principles of statistical mechanics. Statistical mechanics is one of the fundamental branches of theoretical physics and chemistry, and deals with many systems such as gases, liquids, solids, and even molecules which have many atoms. The book consists of three parts. Part I gives the principles, with elementary applications to noninteracting systems. It begins with kinetic theory and discusses classical and quantum systems in equilibrium and nonequilibrium. In Part II, classical statistical mechanics is developed for interacting systems in equilibrium and nonequilibrium. Finally, in Part III, quantum statistics is presented to an extent which enables the reader to proceed to advanced many-body theories. This book is written for a one-year graduate course in statistical mechanics or a half-year course followed by a half-year course on related subjects, such as special topics and applications or elementary many-body theories. Efforts are made such that discussions of each subject start with an elementary level and end at an advanced level.

Book Statistical Physics of Fluids

Download or read book Statistical Physics of Fluids written by V.I. Kalikmanov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-06-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew out of the senior level lecture course I teach at Delft Univer sity and which I have taught in recent years at Eindhoven University and the University of Utrecht. Numerous discussions with students and colleagues led me to the conclusion that in spite of the existence of excellent books on the statistical theory of fluids, there is a gap between the fundamental theory and application of its concepts and techniques to practical problems. This book is an attempt to at least partially fill it. It is not intended to be a thorough and comprehensive review of liquid state theory, which would inevitably require invoking a large number of re sults without actual derivation. Rather I prefer to focus on the main physical ideas and mathematical methods of fluid theory, starting with the basic prin ciples of statistical mechanics, and present a detailed derivation of results accompanied by an explanation of their physical meaning. The same ap proach applies to several specialized topics of the liquid state, most of which are recent developments and belong to the areas of my own activities and thus reflect my personal taste. Wherever possible, theoretical predictions are compared with available experimental and simulation data.

Book Quantum Statistics of Dense Gases and Nonideal Plasmas

Download or read book Quantum Statistics of Dense Gases and Nonideal Plasmas written by Werner Ebeling and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is the pedagogical exploration of the basic principles of quantum-statistical thermodynamics as applied to various states of matter – ranging from rare gases to astrophysical matter with high-energy density. The reader will learn in this work that thermodynamics and quantum statistics are still the concepts on which even the most advanced research is operating - despite of a flood of modern concepts, classical entities like temperature, pressure, energy and entropy are shown to remain fundamental. The physics of gases, plasmas and high-energy density matter is still a growing field and even though solids and liquids dominate our daily life, more than 99 percent of the visible Universe is in the state of gases and plasmas and the overwhelming part of matter exists at extreme conditions connected with very large energy densities, such as in the interior of stars. This text, combining material from lectures and advanced seminars given by the authors over many decades, is a must-have introduction and reference for both newcomers and seasoned researchers alike.

Book Equilibrium Statistical Physics

Download or read book Equilibrium Statistical Physics written by M. Baus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-15 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a textbook which gradually introduces the student to the statistical mechanical study of the different phases of matter and to the phase transitions between them. Throughout, only simple models of both ordinary and soft matter are used but these are studied in full detail. The subject is developed in a pedagogical manner, starting from the basics, going from the simple ideal systems to the interacting systems, and ending with the more modern topics. The textbook provides the student with a complete overview, intentionally at an introductory level, of the theory of phase transitions. All equations and deductions are included.

Book Physics of Liquid Matter

Download or read book Physics of Liquid Matter written by Paola Gallo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a didactic and a self-contained treatment of the physics of liquid and flowing matter with a statistical mechanics approach. Experimental and theoretical methods that were developed to study fluids are now frequently applied to a number of more complex systems generically referred to as soft matter. As for simple liquids, also for complex fluids it is important to understand how their macroscopic behavior is determined by the interactions between the component units. Moreover, in recent years new and relevant insights have emerged from the study of anomalous phases and metastable states of matter. In addition to the traditional topics concerning fluids in normal conditions, the authors of this book discuss recent developments in the field of disordered systems in condensed and soft matter. In particular they emphasize computer simulation techniques that are used in the study of soft matter and the theories and study of slow glassy dynamics. For these reasons the book includes a specific chapter about metastability, supercooled liquids and glass transition. The book is written for graduate students and active researchers in the field.

Book Theory of Liquids

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kostya Trachenko
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2023-08-17
  • ISBN : 1009355503
  • Pages : 227 pages

Download or read book Theory of Liquids written by Kostya Trachenko and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-17 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the three basic states of matter, liquid is perhaps the most complex. While its flow properties are described by fluid mechanics, its thermodynamic properties are often neglected, and for many years it was widely believed that a general theory of liquid thermodynamics was unattainable. In recent decades that view has been challenged, as new advances have finally enabled us to understand and describe the thermodynamic properties of liquids. This book explains the recent developments in theory, experiment and modelling that have enabled us to understand the behaviour of excitations in liquids and the impact of this behaviour on heat capacity and other basic properties. Presented in plain language with a focus on real liquids and their experimental properties, this book is a useful reference text for researchers and graduate students in condensed matter physics and chemistry as well as for advanced courses covering the theory of liquids.
