Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monoamine Oxidases and Their Selective Inhibition, Volume IV, documents the proceedings of the 3rd Congress of the Hungarian Pharmacological Society held in Budapest, 1979. The discovery of the selective monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, such as clorgyline and deprenyl, has given a new impetus to MAO research as well as to the clinical applicability of these compounds. This volume contains 21 papers by researchers and clinicians from eight different countries. It begins with papers on the pharmacological effects and the biochemical mode of actions of deprenyl as well as some other new selective inhibitors. This is followed by communications concerning the biochemical methods applied in the study of the nature of MAO in the mitochondrial membrane. Finally, the neurologists provide an account of their experience with the clinical application of deprenyl, and other inhibitors in Parkinsonian patients. They also discuss the essential role of the dopaminergic mechanism with respect to the disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume are the invited lectures at the Second Workshop on Amine Oxidases held at the Biomedical Center, Uppsala University, 2 to 4 August 1986. It was a great pleasure for the organizers to see, in Uppsala, so many old and new friends, all brought together by our common interest in the fascinating field of Amine Oxidases. The Workshop was the successor of a long row of successful predecessors to start with the 1972 meeting in Cagliari, Sardinia, and recently preceded by the first meeting of Workshop design, held in Cambridge 1984. Several of the previous meetings have been dedicated to distinguished senior research workers within the field. To start this Workshop a memorial lecture was given. This lecture, given by Prof. T. P. Singer, was dedicated to the late Prof. K. Kamijo, who was one of the pioneers of what is now worldwide interest in Amine Oxidases and who organized the superb meeting in Hakone 1981. To the great honour of all the participants the family of the late Prof. Kamijo visited the Workshop. Abstracts of all the presentations have been published as a Supplement of Acta Pharmacologica et Toxicologica (Copenhagen).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day veterinarians in practice are asked to treat petsexhibiting problem behaviors. In the last several yearspharmacologic treatments of behavior have made significant advancesand can serve as a critical part of therapy. Veterinary Pscyhopharmacology is a complete source of currentknowledge on the subject of pharmacologic behavior modificationthat veterinarians can turn to for the answers they need. Classification of disorders is eschewed in favor of in-depthexplanations of pharmacologic options in inducing behavior changes.Special emphasis is given to explaining the underlying mechanism ofpharmacologic agents used in therapy; thus, veterinarians will knownot only which drugs to prescribe but why they should be prescribedand how they work. Veterinary behaviorists, their students and residents, veterinarypractitioners of all levels, and veterinary students will find thisbook invaluable in providing information about their patients'behavior problems and the psychoactive medications that might helpthem.

Book Oxidases and Related Redox Systems

Download or read book Oxidases and Related Redox Systems written by Tsso E. King and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 1295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxidases and Related Redox Systems is a collection of papers from the Third International Symposium on Oxidases and Related Reduction Systems held in Albany, New York on July 3-7, 1979. This book deals with the oxygen and peroxide activating enzymes field. The book addresses electron transfer related to oxygen biochemistry by comparing quantum, semiclassical, and classical methods of electron transfer reactions. Several papers then discuss the active and toxic states of oxygen and superoxide as the discovery of superoxide dismutase activity of erythrocuprein can provide a means to studying oxygen reaction in biological systems. One paper then compares the active sites of molluskan and arthropodan hemocyanins, which are known as reversible oxygen-carriers. The result of this study is presented in a table. Other papers discuss the flavin catalyzed reactions of molecular oxygen and the implications of the physiological function of D-amino acid oxidase from inhibition studies. The book then explains the role of carbon monoxide in the reaction mechanism of oxygen with cytochrome oxidase. This collection will prove beneficial for research students and professors in the field of biochemistry and chemical physics.

Download or read book Prostanoids written by Valéria Kecskeméti and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prostanoids, Volume VI, documents the proceedings of the 3rd Congress of the Hungarian Pharmacological Society held in Budapest, 1979. Prostaglandin research is an exciting and rapidly developing field in chemical and biological sciences. It is the recently discovered prostacyclin that has brought about a breakthrough in prostaglandin research giving new impetus to clinical investigation. This volume contains 22 papers read at the ""Prostanoids Symposium"" by participants from eight different countries. Numerous new data concerning the synthesis of prostacyclin and different stable prostacyclin analogues are presented. Besides the problems of synthetic chemistry, data are given about the pharmacological properties of these prostacyclin analogues, analyzing their effects on heat and smooth muscles. Several papers dealing with the involvement of different pharmacologically active agents and hormones in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins emphasize the important role of prostanoids in various pathophysiological processes and diseases. The clinical use of prostacyclin, having already earned an outstanding position in medicine, is stressed.

Book Aminergic and Peptidergic Receptors

Download or read book Aminergic and Peptidergic Receptors written by E. S. Vizi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Pharmacological Research and Practice, Volume VII: Aminergic and Peptidergic Receptors focuses on how neurotransmitters, drugs, and hormones affect the plasma membrane. The text then presents various laboratory experiments done to animals to determine how these receptors affect the plasma membrane of these subjects. One of the internal body parts examined is the heart. The variation in sensitivity of opiate receptors is also discussed, focusing on the effect of opioid peptides and morphine on the nigrostriatal axon terminals. The book also discusses the biochemical and pharmacological assets of opiate receptors among mollusks; the upshot of peptides upon biogenic amines of the central nervous system; and how gastrin analogues affect the gastrin receptor of the stomach. This book is a great find for highly trained scholars in the field of receptor research, including biochemists, chemists, pathologists, morphologists, physiologists, and pharmacologists.

Book Pharmacological Control of Heart and Circulation

Download or read book Pharmacological Control of Heart and Circulation written by L. Tardos and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pharmacological Control of Heart and Circulation, Volume 1, documents the proceedings of the 3rd Congress of the Hungarian Pharmacological Society held in Budapest, 1979. Because the papers published in this volume cover diverse areas of the cardiovascular field, they had to be arranged into several smaller symposia. The common thread running through these symposia is their focus on some pathological condition of the heart and circulation as well as on their control by drugs. The first symposium is devoted to the pharmacological control of the adverse effects of coronary insufficiency including disturbances in rhythm. The second symposium is dedicated to cardiac hypertrophy; to the action of cardiac hypertrophy on the sensitivity of the heart to drugs; and to the changes in the biochemical parameters of the myocardium due to cardiomegaly. The third symposium deals with hypertension and its pharmacological control. Two separate symposia are devoted to new drugs, namely the fourth symposium to the cerebrovascular activity of Cavinton—a synthetic Vinca-derivative; and the fifth to a newly developed beta-adrenergic blocking agent, Tobanum, to its anti-arrhythmic action, its effect in myocardial ischemia and in hypertension. Finally, a short symposium on serotonin and serotonin antagonists, both of great importance in cardiovascular pharmacology, is included.
