Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of summerschools and workshops at the Kanzelh· ohe · Solar Observatory, Karn · · ten, Austria, devotedtoup-to-datetopicsinsolarphysics has been proven to be extremely successful, and thus in August/September 2003 the third combined summerschool and workshop was held there. This book contains the proceedings of the Summerschool and Wo- shop "Solar Magnetic Phenomena" held from 25 August to 5 September 2003 at the Solar Observatory Kanzelh· ohe, · which belongs to the Institute for Geophysics, Astrophysics and Meteorology of the University of Graz, Austria. The book contains the contributions from six invited lecturers. They give an overview on the following topics: observations of the pho- sphere and chromosphere, solar?are observations and theory, coronal mass ejections and the relevance of magnetic helicity, high-energy radiation from the Sun, the physics of solar prominences and highlights from the SOHO mission. The lectures contain about 25 to 30 pages each and provide a valuableintroduction to the topics mentioned above. The comprehensive lists ofreferences at theendof each contribution enablethe interested reader to go into more detail. The second part of the book contains contributed papers. These - pers were presented anddiscussed in theworkshop sessions during the afternoons. The sessions stimulated intensive discussions between the p- ticipants and lecturers

Book Highlights of Astronomy Volume 14

Download or read book Highlights of Astronomy Volume 14 written by Karel van der Hucht and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-21 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recording the proceedings of the IAU XXVI General Assembly, this volume of the IAU Highlights of Astronomy covers virtually all aspects of modern astrophysics as discussed by 2400 participants from 73 countries. Notably, the common aspects of astrophysical phenomena known to exist in widely differing interstellar environments is thoroughly examined, providing fertile cross correlation from one specialisation to another. This text highlights the importance of the triennial IAU General Assemblies in bringing together the work of observers and theoreticians in widely different fields, but working towards a common goal: understanding the physics of the Universe. Together with the Proceedings of the IAU Symposia 235-240, this volume examines all of the astrophysics presented at the General Assembly.

Fact-filled and image-rich guide to the principles of astronomy, its history, a host of fun facts, and helpful tips for the backyard or budding astronomers! We look to the heavens and wonder in awe. Shooting stars, constellations, planets, galaxies, and the unknown. What is out there? Who is out there? How did the stars and planets come to be? What does it all mean? The last few years have brought an explosion of information leading to serious consideration of questions once deemed crazy. Do other universes exist? Are there planets that could harbor life? From a neutron star to a black hole; from the Higgs Boson particle to cosmic strings; from the speed of light to gamma radiation; plus a universe of ideas and concepts in between, The Handy Astronomy Answer Book takes you on a journey through the history, science and the latest findings in astronomy. This book tells the story of astronomy—of the cosmos and its contents, and of humanity’s efforts throughout history to unlock its secrets and solve its mysteries. You’ll learn the answers to more than 1,000 questions on astronomy and space, including ... What is astrobiology? What is the Dresden Codex, and what does it say about Mayan astronomy? What happened between Galileo and the Catholic Church? What is the longest time that a human has been in space? What is a gamma-ray burst? How do I use a star chart to find stars and constellations? How do space and time relate to one another? What were considered to be NASA’s four great observatories in space? How do astronomers map the night sky? How many constellations are there? How has the discovery of exoplanets affected the search for extraterrestrial life? Could a moon found in a star's habitable zone support life as we know it? How will the universe end? From the basic physics and history of astronomy to using star charts, telescopes, and other helpful hints for the home astronomer, and from space mission programs to the greatest adventure of all—the search for life beyond Earth—The Handy Astronomy Answer Book includes information on virtually every topic related to outer space. Book The Sun

    Book Details:
  • Author : Leon Golub
  • Publisher : Reaktion Books
  • Release : 2017-06-15
  • ISBN : 1780238029
  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book The Sun written by Leon Golub and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s a good story: we are made of matter like that we also find in the stars. Essential to our planet’s existence, the Sun—our nearest star––is also the most fascinating object humans have ever adored, literally the difference between day and night. But getting beyond these basic perceptions requires scientific understanding. What, for instance, is the sun made of? Why does it burn so brightly? How long will it last? This book not only answers these questions but also tells the story of how we came to know—not merely behold—the grandest entity in our sky. Leon Golub and Jay M. Pasachoff offer an engaging and informative account of solar science and its history, drawing on centuries of study by solar astronomers who have looked to the Sun not only to learn about our own solar system but also about what lies in the distant wilderness of faintly glimmering stars. They skim along the surface of the Sun, which is decorated with sunspots, discussing these fascinating magnetic aberrations and the roughly eleven-year cycles they abide. They follow seismic waves into the interior of the Sun and its unending nuclear fusion. They show us what is unveiled in solar eclipses and what new views and knowledge our space exploration has afforded us. They brave solar weather, and they trace the arcs of radiation and particles whose effects we can see on earth in phenomena such as the northern and southern lights. Glowing with a wide assortment of astonishing images, this beautifully illustrated guide will delight everyone, from those who know what a coronagraph is to those who simply like to step out on a bright day, close their eyes, and feel the Sun’s warmth upon their skin.

Book The Future of Small Telescopes in the New Millennium

Download or read book The Future of Small Telescopes in the New Millennium written by Terry D. Oswalt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-02-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title details the essential roles that small telescopes should play in 21st century science and how their future productivity can be maximized. Over 70 experts from all corners of the international astronomical community have created a reference on the future of big science with small telescopes. at national facilities and their omission from national science priority studies, the oft-lamented demise of the small telescope has been greatly exaggerated. In fact, the future of these workhorses of astronomy will be brighter than ever if creative steps are taken now. This three-volume set defines essential roles that small telescopes should play in 21st century science and the ways in which a productive future for them can be realized. A wide cross-section of the astronomical community has contributed to a definitive assessment of the present and a vision for the future. volume one of this three-volume set examines the public's and the astronomical communities' own perceptions and misconceptions of small telescope productivity. These shape the future scientific research that will be done with telescopes smaller than 4-m in aperture and the number of astronomers that will have access to them.
