Download or read book Advanced Sensor Concepts written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-24 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Sensor Concepts project was conducted under the Center Director's Discretionary Fund at the Marshall Space Flight Center. Its objective was to advance the technology originally developed for the Glovebox Integrated Microgravity Isolation Technology project. The objective of this effort was to develop and test several new motion sensors. To date, the investigators have invented seven new technologies during this endeavor and have conceived several others. The innovative basic sensor technology is an absolute position sensor. It employs only two active components, and it is simple, inexpensive, reliable, repeatable, lightweight, and relatively unobtrusive. Two sensors can be utilized in the same physical space to achieve redundancy. The sensor has micrometer positional accuracy and can be configured as a two- or three-dimensional sensor. The sensor technology has the potential to pioneer a new class of linear and rotary sensors. This sensor is the enabling technology for autonomous assembly of modular structures in space and on extraterrestrial locations. Alhorn, D. C. and Howard, D. E. and Smith, D. A. Book Expanding the Vision of Sensor Materials

Download or read book Expanding the Vision of Sensor Materials written by Committee on New Sensor Technologies: Materials and Applications and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-07-06 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in materials science and engineering have paved the way for the development of new and more capable sensors. Drawing upon case studies from manufacturing and structural monitoring and involving chemical and long wave-length infrared sensors, this book suggests an approach that frames the relevant technical issues in such a way as to expedite the consideration of new and novel sensor materials. It enables a multidisciplinary approach for identifying opportunities and making realistic assessments of technical risk and could be used to guide relevant research and development in sensor technologies.

Book Advanced Wavefront Sensor Concepts

Download or read book Advanced Wavefront Sensor Concepts written by J. K. Bowker and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this effort was to investigate advances in wavefront sensor technology for use in future adaptive optics systems. The improvements sought over presently developed adaptive optics systems are preliminary in the areas of component efficiency and sub-system complexity, since this would have potential for major operational simplicity and reduced cost. The concept under study in this effort is the Large Scale Integrated Imaging Irradiance (LSI3) sensor. This is based on the Integrated Imaging Irradiance (I3) sensor (U.S. Patent No. 4,141,652). The I3 sensor is based on the Hartmann concepts, but does not suffer from the optical alignment problems inherent to previously developed Hartmann sensors. Another of the major advantages of the LSI3 sensor over the Hartmann sensors (including the previously developed I3 sensor) is that the LSI3 sensor utilizes the full aperture of the system in dividing the input photon flux into the respective quadrants which results in better diffraction - limited resolution. The LSI3 sensor is based on an optical system that is independent of the number of sub-apertures selected. The major tasks of this study included the conceptual design of a small version (approximately 20 channels), a large scale (approximately 200 channels) wavefront sensor, and the evaluation of the expected performance, complexity, and cost of these prototype models. The result of these design advancements is a new wavefront sensor (LSI3) which could provide cost and performance advances for future adaptive optics systems.

Book Aerospace Sensor Systems and Applications

Download or read book Aerospace Sensor Systems and Applications written by Shmuel Merhav and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about aerospace sensors, their principles of operation, and their typical advantages, shortcomings, and vulnerabilities. They are described in the framework of the subsystems where they function and in accordance with the flight mission they are designed to serve. The book is intended for students at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level and for research engineers who need to acquire this kind of knowledge. An effort has been made to explain, within a uniform framework of mathematical modeling, the physics upon which a certain sensor concept is based, its construction, its dynamics, and its error sources and their corresponding mathematical models. Equipped with such knowledge and understanding, the student or research engineer should be able to get involved in research and development activities of guidance, control, and navigation systems and to contribute to the initiation of novel ideas in the aerospace sensor field. As a designer and systems engineer, he should be able to correctly interpret the various items in a technical data list and thus to interact intelligently with manufacturers' representatives and other members of an R&D team. Much of the text has evolved from undergraduate and graduate courses given by the author during the past seventeen years at the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Technion- Israel Institute of Technology and from his earlier research and development experience in flight control, guidance, navigation, and avionics at the Ministry of Defense Central Research Institute.

Book Advanced Sensors for Real Time Monitoring Applications

Download or read book Advanced Sensors for Real Time Monitoring Applications written by Olga Korostynska and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is impossible to imagine the modern world without sensors, or without real-time information about almost everything—from local temperature to material composition and health parameters. We sense, measure, and process data and act accordingly all the time. In fact, real-time monitoring and information is key to a successful business, an assistant in life-saving decisions that healthcare professionals make, and a tool in research that could revolutionize the future. To ensure that sensors address the rapidly developing needs of various areas of our lives and activities, scientists, researchers, manufacturers, and end-users have established an efficient dialogue so that the newest technological achievements in all aspects of real-time sensing can be implemented for the benefit of the wider community. This book documents some of the results of such a dialogue and reports on advances in sensors and sensor systems for existing and emerging real-time monitoring applications.
