Book Advanced Maneuvering Propulsion System Lockheed Propellant Feed System Design Volume I Summary

Download or read book Advanced Maneuvering Propulsion System Lockheed Propellant Feed System Design Volume I Summary written by ROCKETDYNE CANOGA PARK CALIF. and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high performance LF2/LH2 maneuvering propulsion system has been defined, which provides an in orbit delta V capability in excess of 21,000 ft/sec with a 2000 pound payload. The system, which is designed for launch into a 100 nautical mile polar orbit with the Titan IIID, weighs 18,000 pounds fully loaded, has instant response and multi-start capability, while providing a nominal space residence duration of 14 days. Longer orbital stay times (up to 180 days) can be accommodated with some design modification without significantly degrading performance. This design can be used as the basis of a ground test article to demonstrate the feasibility of technical concepts applicable to a wide range of high performance stage sizes. (Author).

Download or read book Advanced Maneuvering Propulsion System Lockheed Propellant Feed System Design Volume II Propulsion Stage System Design written by ROCKETDYNE CANOGA PARK CALIF. and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides the details of the selected propellant feed system design. The recommended configuration, consisting of a 1.41 ellipsoidal oxidizer tank, a 1.41 ellipsoidal fuel tank with a short cylindrical section and a conical/cylindrical shell has a mass fraction of 0.854, a dry weight of 2028 lb and a delta V capability of 20,197 to 21,765 ft/sec (with a 2000 lb payload) which varied over this range depending on the duty cycle and thrust level used. With prior knowledge of the duty cycle to be performed, i.e. if the mission is known after achieving orbit, the delta V capability rises to 22,800 ft/sec with the same payload weight. Extended mission capability to 180 days is also presented. A summary of the design, assembly plans, performance data and reliability data are given followed by design details, structural analyses and manufacturing plans for each selected vehicle subsystem.

Book Advanced Maneuvering Propulsion System Convair Propellant Feed System Design Volume III Optimization Studies

Download or read book Advanced Maneuvering Propulsion System Convair Propellant Feed System Design Volume III Optimization Studies written by ROCKETDYNE CANOGA PARK CALIF. and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The optimum propellant tank shapes were found to be a spherical LH2 tank and in a LF2 tank with bulkhead ratio of 1.2. Both tanks are constructed of aluminum. Tank mounted super-insulation affords slightly better performance than shroud mounted insulation. Screen start baskets were selected as superior to dielectrophoretic devices and positive expulsion devices for use in orienting the propellants during coast. Capacitance probes were selected as the propellant management mass sensors due to their superior accuracy and proven reliability. The selected pressurization system utilizes a pressurant 'bubble-up' concept, where the pressurizing medium, helium, is bubbled through the propellants during the pressurizing cycle. The results of these optimization studies were used as the basis of the selected configuration design described in Volume II.

Book Advanced Maneuvering Propulsion System Convair Propellant Feed System Design Volume II Selected Configuration Description

Download or read book Advanced Maneuvering Propulsion System Convair Propellant Feed System Design Volume II Selected Configuration Description written by ROCKETDYNE CANOGA PARK CALIF. and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The optimized design consists of aluminum propellant tanks, a cylindrical outer structural shell, tank mounted multi-layer insulation, a propellant management system with capacitance probe propellant mass sensors, and screen start baskets to provide propellants at the tank outlets during zero g coast. A pressurization system is used which keeps the propellant tank constituents in thermal equilibrium at all times, thereby maintaining a constant state of readiness. The propellant inlet ducts are designed to maintain liquid propellants in near proximity to the engine inlet, providing an instant start capability.

Book Advanced Maneuvering Propulsion Technology Program

Download or read book Advanced Maneuvering Propulsion Technology Program written by ROCKETDYNE CANOGA PARK CALIF. and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The engine design and analysis task was continued with completion of the secondary engine performance analysis, effort toward selecting the main engine thrust chamber segment support structure design, and effort toward completion of the main and secondary engine turbopump layout drawings. The engine critical component demonstration testing task was primarily directed toward completion of the full main thrust chamber fabrication and assembly. The major fabrication effort was completed, and assembly is in process. The oxidizer pump bearing and seal testing was continued. The main tester was damaged due to the suspected presence of solid contaminant, and the test program was continued with the secondary tester. The final Phase I analysis and design of the propellant feed system was completed by both General Dynamics/Convair and Lockheed Missiles and Space Company. (Author).

Book Advanced Thrust Chamber for Space Maneuvering Propulsion Task i System Studies

Download or read book Advanced Thrust Chamber for Space Maneuvering Propulsion Task i System Studies written by R. P. Pauckert and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The previous study results of Contract AF04(611)-10745 are extended to investigate the capabilities of increased gross weight Maneuvering Space Propulsion Systems (MSPS) using LF2/LH2, LO2/LH2, and N2O4/N2H4-UDMH(50-50) propellants. The range of stage gross weights considered was based on the payload capabilities of Titan III-C and Saturn I-B and several growth versions of these launch vehicles. Maneuvering space propulsion system gross weights ranging from 20,000 to 50,000 pounds were shown to result in velocity increment capabilities up to 29,000 ft/sec for the 2000-pound payload LF2/LH2 system. The concentric aerodynamic spike/bell engine configuration was selected for the LF2/LH2 and LO2/LH2 system design thrust levels investigated. The configuration selected for the N2O4/N2H4-UDMH(50-50) consisted of one larger primary bell nozzle engine and two small secondary bell nozzle engines. The orbit storage life capabilities of the three propellant combinations were determined and compared for a 20,000-pound-gross weight stage. The LF2/LH2 system provided higher delta V capabilities than the other propellants for orbital storage times up to 2 years with full propellant tanks. The delta V advantage for the LF2/LH2 systems is also maintained when mission duty cycles result in partial propellant loads for the major portion of the storage duration. (Author).

Book Movement And Maneuver In Deep Space

Download or read book Movement And Maneuver In Deep Space written by Brian E. Hans and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the authors' abstract: "This analytical study looks at the importance of Deep Space Operations and recommends an approach for senior policy leaders. Section 1 presents a capability requirements definition with candidate solutions and technology strategies. Section 2 recommends an acquisition and organizational approach. Section 3 provides an extended strategic rationale for deep space operations as a national priority." And from the Introduction: [this essay] "presents capability requirements, potential solutions, and strategic rationale for achieving movement and maneuver advantage in deep space. In this context, deep space is anything beyond geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO). Driving the research are two primary assumptions underpinning the need for investment in deep space propulsion. The first assumption is that growing international activity, commerce, and industry in space extends the global commons, thus creating a military-economic imperative for the United States Department of Defense (DoD) to expand its protection of U.S. interests by defending space lines of communication. Although there are wide-ranging reasons to expand the space-faring capabilities of the human species, from the capitalistic to the existential, the fact of its occurrence offers the U.S. immense strategic opportunity. Section 1, operating on this assumption, recommends capability-based requirements for deep space operations given a projected future operating environment. The second driving assumption underpinning this study is that improved movement and maneuver capabilities in deep space offer a wide array of benefits for the current National Security Enterprise, and for this reason alone demands attention in the form of disciplined investment. Furthermore, because the core functional capability required for deep space operations is in-space propulsion, the requirement necessitates a materiel solution.
