Book Social and Behavioral Factors Associated with Adolescent Steroid Use

Download or read book Social and Behavioral Factors Associated with Adolescent Steroid Use written by Rebecca L. Elkins and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study One Abstract:Background: Steroid use is an increasing health issue among adolescents. Purpose: This study investigated steroid use among 9th through 12th grade students in the Greater Cincinnati area. Methods: A total of 38,414 students completed the PRIDE Questionnaire, which examined steroid use and other drug use. Results: A total of 2.6% of students reported using steroids in the past year. Steroid use (past year) was significantly most common among males, juniors/seniors, African American adolescents, and Hispanic adolescents. Parent and school factors were significantly associated with past year steroid use, while sport participation was not significantly related. Having high levels of parental rule setting regarding substance use were associated with decreased odds for past year steroid use. Similarly, adolescents at schools with clear/consistent rules and enforcement regarding substance use were at decreased odds for past year steroid use. Such findings varied based on sex, grade level, race, and ethnicity. Students who reported that teachers frequently discuss the dangers of substance use were at an increased risk for past year steroid use. Discussion: Several risk and protective factors for steroid use were identified and as such should be addressed in prevention programs. Initiatives to reduce risk of steroid use should incorporate parental and school factors. Special attention is warranted for Hispanic and African American adolescents. Further examination of the potential relationship between context of sport participation and adolescent steroid use is needed. Study Two Abstract: Background: School violence, school victimization and suicidal ideation are serious public health concerns among adolescents. Purpose: The present pilot study investigated the association between adolescent steroid use and school violence, school violent victimization and suicidal ideation. Methods: A secondary data analysis of the 2014 PRIDE Questionnaire was performed based on information collected from 38,414 high school adolescents from the Greater Cincinnati area. Results: Results indicated higher than average rates of school violence (32%), school violent victimization (29%), and suicidal ideation (32%). Logistic regression analyses indicated that steroid use was directly related to school violence, school violent victimization and suicidal ideation in the previous year. Additionally, adolescents who were male, Freshman/Sophomore, and in a minority group were at greatest risk for engagement in school violence. African American, Hispanic and younger adolescents were at increased odds for school violent victimization. Minority students and females were at greatest risk for suicidal ideation. Discussion: Findings from this study may be beneficial to health professionals, schools and prevention specialists and could be used when developing comprehensive prevention efforts for adolescents.

Book Supplement and steroid use among male teenagers

Download or read book Supplement and steroid use among male teenagers written by Gary Elliott and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Sport - Sport Medicine, Therapy, Nutrition, ( Atlantic International University ), language: English, abstract: In any paper revolving around teenagers and their use of ‘mass building’ supplements it is important to note that the use of supplements to build mass and the use of steroids are not mutually exclusive. Many authors of works on body image and steroid use believe that they are inextricably linked. It is debatable as to whether the use of over-the-counter supplements are a ‘gateway’ to the use of more damaging steroids but the overwhelming feeling confirms that the risk is increased when teenagers begin to take supplements. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Youth Risk Behaviour Surveillance- United States, reports that the percentage of students using steroids increased to 6,1% by 2002. The common belief that ‘supplements’ are not potentially dangerous has resulted in a limited amount of information about youths (of school-going age) and their ‘supplement use’ habits. As such, the preliminary information in this paper will focus on the prevalence of steroid use among males. The National Centre for Education Statistics estimated that in 2005, of “16,5 million some 5,4% of the public and private school children between” the ages of 14-17 years (660 000 children) had used or were using steroids. In Body Dysmorphic Disorder in Men, Phillips indicates that between 6 and “7% of high school boys have used these drugs” (Phillips: 2001). Adolescent anabolic steroid use is a nationwide phenomenon with “prevalence rates among high school males [ranging] from 5-11%”, with high school athletes continuing to use these agents to improve their athletic performance and appearance despite the associated risks (Proctor: 1998). In addition, it is reported that school children begin using anabolic steroids before the age of 16 years and up to 86% of these students have no intention to cease their use of these illegal drugs. In light of these statistics, in any attempt to reduce the associated health risks of steroid use/abuse, it is imperative that implementation programmes to that effect are introduced into the school curriculum at the very latest in junior high. “Performance enhancing drugs” have been around for centuries; the ancient Greeks used “strychnine and hallucinogenic mushrooms” in preparation for the original Olympic Games; years later (1886), the first athlete died from using performance-enhancing drugs (Luciano: 2001, 175)...

Download or read book Steroid Use and Abuse written by Paul K. Roberts and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Anabolic steroids" is the familiar name for synthetic substances related to the male sex hormones (e.g., testosterone). They promote the growth of skeletal muscle (anabolic effects) and the development of male sexual characteristics (androgenic effects) in both males and females. The term "anabolic steroids" will be used throughout this book because of its familiarity, although the proper term for these compounds is "anabolic-androgenic steroids." As discussed in this book, the primary medical uses of these compounds are to treat delayed puberty, some types of impotence, and wasting of the body caused by HIV infection or other diseases. However, steroids can also be abused and this has become so widespread in athletics that it has affected the outcome of sports contests. Illicit steroids are often sold at gyms, competitions, and through mail order operations after being smuggled into this country. This book presents important information related to this problem.

Book The Adonis Complex

Download or read book The Adonis Complex written by Harrison Pope and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2000 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing numbers of young men are taking the quest for perfect muscles, skin and hair too far, crossing the line from normal interest to pathological obsession. For the first time, three of the world's leading authorities on men help us to understand and combat the frightening set of compulsive behaviours that make up the Adonis Complex. Combining colourful case studies with scientific research, they reveal a threat that is as serious as the beauty myth for women or anorexia nervosa for girls. The symptoms of this dangerous body obsession, excessive workouts, steroid abuse, eating disorders and body and muscle dysmorphic disorder (distorted body perception), lead to problems with sex and intimacy, relationships and work. In teenagers, the Adonis Complex can interfere with healthy emotional and physical development. Until now, frank discussion of this problem has been virtually taboo. At last we can hear what men really think and feel about their bodies, so that those who suffer in silence will no longer need to suffer alone.

Book Macho Medicine

Book excerpt: There may be over three million steroid users in the United States today--teenage athletes, TV wrestlers, police, many others--and most of them acquire the drug on the $4 billion a year black market. Perhaps the fastest growing segment of users is young women 13 to 18. An expert here lays out the historical factors, the synthesis of testosterone, early clinical experimentation with steroids, the formulation of false dogma by the medical community, sports organization coverups, the limitations of testing for steroids, and addiction and treatment programs.

Download or read book Anabolic Steroid Use written by General Accounting Office, Washington, DC. and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abuse of anabolic steroids by teenagers--that is, their use without a prescription--is a health concern. Anabolic steroids are synthetic forms of the hormone testosterone that can be taken orally, injected, or rubbed on the skin. Although a 2006 survey funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) found that less than 3 percent of 12th graders had abused anabolic steroids, it also found that about 40 percent of 12th graders described anabolic steroids as "fairly easy" or "very easy" to get. The abuse of anabolic steroids can cause serious health effects and behavioral changes in teenagers. GAO was asked to examine federally funded efforts to address the abuse of anabolic steroids among teenagers and to review available research on this issue. This report describes: (1) federally funded efforts that address teenage abuse of anabolic steroids; (2) available research on teenage abuse of anabolic steroids; and (3) gaps or areas in need of improvement that federal officials and other experts identify in research that addresses teenage anabolic steroid abuse. To do this work, GAO reviewed federal agency materials and published studies identified through a literature review and interviewed federal officials and other experts.
