But how exactly does religion contribute to the formation of teenagers' sexual values and actions? What difference, if any, does religion make in adolescents' sexual attitudes and behaviors? Are abstinence pledges effective? What does it mean to be "emotionally ready" for sex? Who expresses regrets about their sexual activity and why? Tackling these and other questions, Forbidden Fruit tells the definitive story of the sexual values and practices of American teenagers, paying particular attention to how participating in organized religion shapes sexual decision-making. Merging analyses of three national surveys with stories drawn from interviews with over 250 teenagers across America, Mark Regnerus reviews how young people learn-and what they know-about sex from their parents, schools, peers and other sources. He examines what experiences teens profess to have had, and how they make sense of these experiences in light of their own identities as religious, moral, and responsible persons. Religion can and does matter, Regnerus finds, but religious claims are often swamped by other compelling sexual scripts. Particularly interesting is the emergence of what Regnerus calls a new middle class sexual morality which has little to do with a desire for virginity but nevertheless shuns intercourse in order to avoid risks associated with pregnancy and STDs. And strikingly, evangelical teens aren't less sexually active than their non-evangelical counterparts, they just tend to feel guiltier about it. In fact, Regnerus finds that few religious teens have internalized or are even able to articulate the sexual ethic taught by their denominations. The only-and largely ineffective-sexual message most religious teens are getting is, "Don't do it until you're married." Ultimately, Regnerus concludes, religion may influence adolescent sexual behavior, but it rarely motivates sexual decision making.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this descriptive study was to review and critically analyze previously published research literature in order to determine the relationship between a teenager's sexual behavior and his or her religious beliefs, convictions, and involvement. Specifically the first question answered was, how do teen religious beliefs and involvement affect sexual decision making and sexual involvement? The literature suggested that a deep, personal relationship with God does affect sexual decision making for a lot of teenagers, but not all. In response to the second research question (how does religiosity affect contraceptive use, pregnancy rates, and STI rates?) it was discovered that teenagers who do profess a high level of religion often do not use effective forms of contraception. Lastly, the final research question asked about the relationship between family and friend's religiosity and the student's decision to become sexually active or to remain abstinent. It was found that highly religious peers and family members do largely affect the teen's decision to remain abstinent. As a result of this research, school counselors will better be able to advocate for healthy sexual decision making of adolescents.

Book excerpt: Sexuality is an integral part of human life and the desire to express sexuality continues throughout life, therefore it is important to establish healthy sexual practices early in the life course. Religiosity has been shown to delay sexual intercourse; however the research is not consistent on the relationship between religiosity and responsible sexual behavior after sexual intercourse has been initiated. The purpose of this study to examine the concurrent and longitudinal relationship between religiosity and responsible sexual behavior among sexually active adolescents and young adults. This study is a secondary analysis of the public-use data from Wave I and Wave III of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). The sample includes 801 unmarried, sexually active respondents who participated in both Wave I and Wave III, and who were at least years old in Wave I. Religiosity is measured using three independent single measures-religious affiliation, frequency of attendance, and salience. Other covariates include demographic factors and sexual psychosocial factors. In adolescence, responsible sexual behavior is measured as contraceptive use at last sex. In young adulthood, responsible sexual behavior is measured as contraceptive use at last sex, frequency of birth control use, frequency of condom use and number of partners in the past year. It was hypothesized that adolescents and young adults who were more religious would be more likely to demonstrate responsible sexual behavior. It was also hypothesized that adolescents who are more religious would be more likely demonstrate responsible sexual behavior as young adults. The results of the multivariate logistic regression analysis do not support the stated hypotheses regarding the relationship between religiosity and responsible sexual behavior in adolescence or young adulthood. It seems as though sexual psychosocial factors and demographic factors may be better predictors of responsible sexual behavior. Due to the relatively high religiosity of the sample, the results suggest the unique opportunity faith based organizations have to partner with public health practitioners in the development of programs designed to address and improve adolescent and young adult sexual health.-- Abstract.

Book excerpt: The influence of religiosity in adolescence on several variables that have been shown to be predictors of marital quality and stability was examined using a nationally representative sample of 3,151 youth, aged 13 to 17 years, from the National Study of Youth and Religion (NSYR). Religiosity was defined to incorporate multiple characteristics including religious beliefs, attitudes, participation, experiences, and identities. The effect of religious affiliation and religiosity was also examined for seven premarital predictors, which included relationship with parents, ideal age for marriage, right and wrong, academic achievement, sexual behavior, attitude toward cohabitation, and attitude toward divorce. Data were collected through telephone interviews using a random-digit-dial method between 2002 and 2003. Youth were categorized into eight religious groups: Conservative Protestant, Mainline Protestant, Black Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Other Christian, and Not Religious. Research questions were analyzed using ANCOVA, OLS regression, and logistic regression. Results indicated that all three research hypotheses were supported by the data. Specifically, religious affiliation significantly predicted level of religiosity, religiosity was related to each of the seven premarital predictors of marital quality and stability, and religious affiliation acted as a moderator in the relationships between religiosity and the seven premarital predictors. Comparison of the eight religious groups revealed that religiosity has a unique influence on youth in the different groups in relation to these outcome variables. In light of these findings, implications, limitations, and future directions for research are discussed.
