Book Confirmation and Adolescent Development

Download or read book Confirmation and Adolescent Development written by René M. Dailey and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study provides an initial test of the theory of parental confirmation. Building on a more general theory of interpersonal confirmation, the theory was extended to focus on parent-adolescent relationships. This expanded theory suggests that adolescents who are confirmed (i.e., validated as a unique and valuable individuals) will make greater advancements in development than adolescents who are disconfirmed (i.e., discounted or rejected). More specifically, the theory emphasizes how the climate created by parental messages was related to the level of adolescent self-esteem, identity strength, and openness with their parents. An observational analysis in combination with self-report measures was employed to test the hypotheses derived from the theory. Generally, the results, particularly of the self-report data, supported the relationship between level of confirming climate and adolescents' developmental outcomes. Yet, analyses also suggested that adolescents' family satisfaction mediated this relationship. Specifically, adolescent family satisfaction fully mediated the relationship between parental confirmation and adolescent self-esteem and identity strength, whereas parental confirmation was directly as well as indirectly (i.e., though family satisfaction) related to adolescent openness. These results suggest that parental communication is linked with adolescents' perceptions of their family experiences as well as their development. Results additionally show that family satisfaction makes an independent and substantial contribution to adolescent development. Results are discussed in terms of theoretical and practical implications. Suggestions for future research are also proffered.

Book Parents Children and Communication

Download or read book Parents Children and Communication written by Thomas J. Socha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first edited volume in the communication field to examine parent-child interaction. It creates a framework for future research in this growing area -- family communication, and more specifically, parent-child communication -- and also suggests new areas of communication research among parents and children -- cultural, work-related, taboo topics, family sex discussions, conflict, and abuse. Chapter authors provide thorough coverage of theoretical approaches, new methods, and emerging contexts including lesbian/gay parent-child relationships. In so doing, they bring a communication perspective to enduring problems of discipline, adolescent conflict, and physical child abuse. The text highlights various methodological approaches -- both quantitative and qualitative -- including conversation analysis, grounded theory, participant-observation, and phenomenological interviewing of children. It also introduces and surveys various theoretical approaches -- general systems, developmental, cultural, and intergenerational transmission.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986, this book is a result of the first International Conference on Personal Relationships held in 1982. The conference itself was a significant event in publicly bringing together major figures whose work was starting to define the new area of personal relationships. The chapters are arranged to follow the structure of the conference program, with major opening and closing discussions covering the whole field and the rest of the chapters grouped under the headings of Depiction and Taxonomy of Relationships; Development and Growth of Relationships and Disorder and Repair of Relationships. The result is by no means a comprehensive treatment of the field, but the editors hoped that the book highlighted significant issues in personal relationship research as well as some excellent examples of the ways in which issues and problems were being tackled at the time. They also hoped that it would have an effect on the future development of the field of personal relationships by indicating its value and potential.
