Book Admonitions on Governing the People

Download or read book Admonitions on Governing the People written by Yagyong Chong and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2010-08-15 with total page 1181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first English translation of one of Korea’s most celebrated historical works, a pre-modern classic so well known to Koreans that it has inspired contemporary literature and television. Written in 1821 by Chong Yagyong (Tasan), Admonitions on Governing the People (Mongmin simso) is a detailed manual for district magistrates on how to govern better. In encyclopedic fashion, Chong Yagyong addresses the administration, social and economic life, criminal justice, the military, and the Confucian ritual system. He provides examples of past corrupt officials and discusses topics of the day such as famine relief and social welfare. A general call for overhauling the Korean ruling system, the book also makes the radical proposition that the purpose of government is to serve the interests of the people. This long-awaited translation opens a new window on early-nineteenth century Korea and makes available to a wide audience a work whose main concerns simultaneously transcend national and cultural boundaries.

Book Governing the Affairs of the People

Download or read book Governing the Affairs of the People written by Steven Rogers and published by . This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: written by a political leader, for political leaders This book is for local government political leaders. You will either learn from its contents, or it contents will scare you to the point that you will throw it in the trash. A must read for political leaders who are under intense pressure and have nowhere to go, or no one to seek guidance from. I am convinced that many elected officials who governed before us knew something about the importance of prayer and biblical wisdom that many elected officials today do not know about or refuse to accept. It would serve all of us well to reflect on the words, wisdom, and, most importantly, the advice, of our founding fathers and the great leaders of Old and early New Testament days, when we are Governing The Affairs Of The People. This book does not advocate supporting a specific political platform, philosophy, position, or party affiliation. It's not about politics as usual. You will read about a few relevant topics not many people in politics talk about and avoid at all costs. Yet, these topics continue to have a profound impact on how individual elected officials like you and me govern the affairs of the people. You will find on its pages words of wisdom and sound advice about how you can prevent yourself from traveling down a very painful and costly road as you pursue your political goals and aspirations.

Book Community Commons and Natural Resource Management in Asia

Download or read book Community Commons and Natural Resource Management in Asia written by Haruka Yanagisawa and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing the commons—natural resources held in common by particular communities—is a complex challenge. How have Asian societies handled resources of this sort in the face of increasing marketization and quickly growing demand for resources? And how have resource management regimes changed over time, with state formation, modernization, development, and globalization? Community, Commons and Natural Resource Management in Asia brings clarity, detail, and historical understanding to these questions across a variety of Asian societies and ecological settings. Case studies drawn from Japan, Korea, Thailand, India, and Bhutan examine fisheries, forests, and other environmental resources held in common. There is a tendency to imagine that traditional communities had socially equitable and environmentally friendly systems for managing the commons, but natural resources in Asia were often under free-access regimes. Resource management developed in response to social and economic pressures, and the state has been at various times both a beneficial and a negative influence on the development of community-level systems of managing the commons. The chapters in this volume show that a simple modernist framework cannot adequately capture this process, and the institutional changes it involved.

Book The People Have Spoken and They Are Wrong

Download or read book The People Have Spoken and They Are Wrong written by David Harsanyi and published by Regnery Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy may be one of the most admired ideas ever concocted, but what if it’s also one of the most harebrained? After many years of writing about democracy for a living, David Harsanyi has concluded that it’s the most overrated, overused, and misunderstood idea in political life. The less we have of it the better. “Democracy” is not synonymous with “freedom.” It is not the opposite of tyranny. In fact, the Founding Fathers knew that democracy can lead to tyranny. That’s why they built so many safeguards against it into the Constitution. Democracy, Harsanyi argues, has made our government irrational, irresponsible, and invasive. It has left the American people with only two options—domination by the majority or a government that can’t possibly work. The modern age has imbued democracy with the mystique of infallibility. But Harsanyi reminds us that the vast majority of political philosophers, including the founders, have thought that responsible, limited government based on direct majority rule over a large, let alone continental scale was a practical impossibility. In The People Have Spoken, you’ll learn: Why the Framers of our Constitution were intent on establishing a republic, not a “democracy” How democracy undermines self-government How shockingly out of touch with reality most voters really are Why democracy is an economic wrecking ball—and an invitation to a politics of envy and corruption How the great political philosophers from Plato and Aristotle to Burke and Tocqueville predicted with uncanny accuracy that democracy could lead to tyranny Harsanyi warns that if we don’t recover the Founders’ republican vision, “democracy” might very well spell the end of American liberty and prosperity.

Book The Government is Not a Village

Download or read book The Government is Not a Village written by Sharon Sarles and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-09-22 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continues the dialog on early education policy started by Hillary Clinton. The statistics are much worse now. More children need care and academic achievement is worse. Government intervention has not been successful. Robust scientific evidence, however, shows that the religiously affiliated schools outperform -- because they aim at character formation. Better policy would then 1) promote church affiliated education and 2) institute character training in the existing government schools and 3) not persist in increasing failed government policies and control. Addresses mis-understandings and offers some examples of success.
