Book Menace to Society

Download or read book Menace to Society written by Roy Godson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the more dangerous contemporary threats to the quality of life is the collaboration of the political establishment with the criminal underworld - the political-criminal nexus (PCN). This active partnership increasingly undermines the rule of law, human rights, and economic development in many parts of the world. States in transition are especially at risk. Despite the magnitude of the threat, there is little understanding of the security threats by the PCNs and how and why political-criminal relationships are formed and maintained. Menace to Society is the first attempt to develop an analytical framework for making generalizations about this contemporary scourge. Case studies of Colombia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia and Ukraine, and the United States by leading scholars and practitioners included here answer such key questions as: How do PCNs get established? How is a PCN maintained, and destroyed? What do the participants want from each other in a PCN? What can be learned from those who have successfully countered the PCN? The findings indicate that political, economic, and cultural factors play a significant role in the formation and evolution of PCNs. When the institutions of the state are weak, as in Nigeria and Colombia, it is difficult for the state to prevent political-criminal collaboration. A lack of checks and balances, either from civil society or opposition political parties such as described in the cases of Mexico and Russia, is a key factor. Cultural patterns tend to facilitate this kind of collaboration. Markets and economics, too, bear on the PCN issue. The supply and demand for illegal goods and services, not only drugs, in many countries creates a market controlled by criminals who need political help to "run" their business. Menance to Society will be critical reading for security planners, foreign and military policymakers, and political scientists.

Book Violation of Trust Second Edition

Download or read book Violation of Trust Second Edition written by Hugo Menendez and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From former special agent in charge for the Office of Organized Crime and Labor Racketeering, Miami Organized Crime Strike Force and Secretary of Labor for the State of Florida Hugo D. Menendez comes an intriguing fiction that provides a true picture of illicit activities. Violation of Trust is a vivid portrayal of how organized crime individuals and organized crime connected labor union offi cers cooperate to embezzle union and health welfare funds to the disadvantage of union members and employers as well as forcing unions on employees. Based on actual criminal investigations of Organized Crime and Labor Racketeering conducted by Mr. Menendez and members of his staff for the U. S. Department of Justice's Miami Organized Crime Strike Force, this book follows the story of Giovanni Pelusa or "Pel" whose life changes forever when he became entangled in the world of organized crime and labor racketeering. From birth, Pel's future had been predetermined. First, by his size and secondly, the infl uence his father's profession had on him. Though he was a loving son and outwardly a decent individual, he was a born enforcer. He had no regard for the pain or even the death he infl icted on others. In trying to become his father, he became entangled in the world of organized crime and labor racketeering. Pel sold his services as other professional individuals sell theirs. His success in the field of muscle for the racketeers provided him with a measure of wealth. His height and strength turned out to be his undoing. Like a ghost, the tall man appeared to be present at many crime scenes. Trying to save himself by turning as an informer cost him dearly instead. His actions led to the unraveling of one of the largest organized crime and labor racketeering conspiracies in the United States.
