Book Colonial Systems of Control

Download or read book Colonial Systems of Control written by Viviane Saleh-Hanna and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2008-04-18 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering book on prisons in West Africa, Colonial Systems of Control: Criminal Justice in Nigeria is the first comprehensive presentation of life inside a West African prison. Chapters by prisoners inside Kirikiri maximum security prison in Lagos, Nigeria are published alongside chapters by scholars and activists. While prisoners document the daily realities and struggles of life inside a Nigerian prison, scholar and human rights activist Viviane Saleh-Hanna provides historical, political, and academic contexts and analyses of the penal system in Nigeria. The European penal models and institutions imported to Nigeria during colonialism are exposed as intrinsically incoherent with the community-based conflict-resolution principles of most African social structures and justice models. This book presents the realities of imprisonment in Nigeria while contextualizing the colonial legacies that have resulted in the inhumane brutalities that are endured on a daily basis. Keywords: Nigeria, West Africa, penal system, maximum-security prison. Published in English.

Book Introduction to Administration of Criminal Justice in Nigeria

Download or read book Introduction to Administration of Criminal Justice in Nigeria written by Ajepe Taiwo Shehu and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To deal with crimes and criminals in any society deserves more of scientific approach than mere military, fire brigade approach. Criminals are products of the society; they were not naturally criminals for God never made any one as such. Many factors are contributories for which crime becomes certainly an important area of study that any government must take with all seriousness to ensure a crime free society. This work is therefore an attempt to evaluate the Nigerian criminal justice system with the view to identifying some of the reasons for the failure of the system. This work grew out of my undergraduate research project at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria where I studied and obtained Bachelor of Law Degree.

Book Access to Justice as a Human Right

Download or read book Access to Justice as a Human Right written by Francesco Francioni and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-10-25 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In international law, as in any other legal system, respect and protection of human rights can be guaranteed only by the availability of effective judicial remedies. When a right is violated or damage is caused, access to justice is of fundamental importance for the injured individual and it is an essential component of the rule of law. Yet, access to justice as a human right remains problematic in international law. First, because individual access to international justice remains exceptional and based on specific treaty arrangements, rather than on general principles of international law; second, because even when such right is guaranteed as a matter of treaty obligation, other norms or doctrines of international law may effectively impede its exercise, as in the case of sovereign immunity or non reviewability of UN Security Council measures directly affecting individuals. Further, even access to domestic legal remedies is suffering because of the constraints put by security threats, such as terrorism, on the full protection of freedom and human rights. This collection of essays offers seven distinct perspectives on the present status of access to justice: its development in customary international law, the stress put on it in times of emergency, its problematic exercise in the case of violations of the law of war, its application to torture victims, its development in the case law of the UN Human Rights Committee and of the European Court of Human Rights, its application to the emerging field of environmental justice, and finally access to justice as part of fundamental rights in European law.

Book Human Rights Manual for Prosecutors

Download or read book Human Rights Manual for Prosecutors written by Egbert Myjer and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This Manual is a practical aid. The principles to be applied by prosecutors in their daily work are to be found in international instruments, regional instruments and commentaries as enacted in domestic law. The Manual introduces practitioners to issues and principles of universal and regional application - practitioners in individual jurisdictions may then marry the applicable principles to provisions of the domestic laws of their own jurisdictions and thus obtain a complete code of conduct for any part of the world and for any official procedure. The Manual includes comments that may assist in that process by putting the quoted texts in a practical context."
