The greater frequency, at least in the Western world, with which people move house can be seen from the statistics. Many migrate voluntarily, or under compulsion, to build up new existences in other parts of the country or in other parts of the world. The problems which face people who are obliged to settle elsewhere have become matters of national and international political importance. Of recent years they have also become the subjects of sociological and socio-psychological research. The psychological research of which this book gives an account took place among families who some years ago emigrated from what was then known as the Dutch East Indies to the Netherlands. Dutch is the language spoken from their youth. Born and bred in another part of the world they embarked in groups to the N ether lands, which they had never seen before, when the country they lived in became independent. No doubt they had a vivid image of the Netherlands. It was the Mother country; they had heard a great deal about it in the course of the simple education they had received. They were acquainted with it through pictures and through the contact, however superficial, with representatives of the ruling country. The military service which had played such an important part in the lives of the male adults had made them feel bound up with the country of the House of Orange.

Many types of demographic data on migration are readily available from a variety of official sources. Social scientists who have addressed themselves to the subject have many plausi ble hypotheses about sociopsychological factors leading to mi gration and the effects of migration upon later adjustment. Conclusions based upon empirical psychological and psychiatric research are few and far between. Is it true that a person who is willing to depart his homeland voluntarily for another country must be better adjusted than others in order to be able to brave the idea of making the change? Or is the converse true? While it would be of great interest to study potential migrants before they leave, and the conditions under which they leave, the present monograph is devoted to research at the other end of the problem. What type of immigrant adjusts well after arrival in the new country, and under what conditions? The unusual situation of Israel in absorbing, in a short span of time, people from many countries of origin afforded a unique opportunity for this type of study.

It gives the essence of a moderated dialogue between psychologists and psychoanalysts, sociologists, public policy and refugee care experts. Migration is connected to social trauma and cannot be handled without being aware of this context. The way refugees are treated in the transit or target countries is often determined by the socio-traumatic history of these countries. Social trauma can be collectively committed and perpetuated, leaving transgenerational traces in posttraumatic and attachment disorders, uprootedness and loss of social and political confidence. Media and cultural artefacts like press, TV and the internet influence collective coping as well as traumatic perpetuation. This book shows how xenophobia in the refugee receiving or transit countries can be caused by projection rather than by experience, and that the way refugees are received and regarded in a country may be connected to the country’s cultural‐traumatic history. Refugees, who are often individually and collectively traumatised, experience multiple re-enactments; however, such retraumatisations between refugees and receiving populations or institutions often remain unaddressed. The split between welcoming and hostile attitudes sometimes leads to unconscious institutional defences, such as lack of cooperation between medical, psychotherapeutic, humanitarian and legal institutions. An interdisciplinary and international exchange on migration and social trauma is necessary on all levels – this book gives convincing examples of this dialogue. Book excerpt: Preserving the relative true-amplitude of seismic traces provides significant advantages for deep crustal investigations, particularly for the identification and analysis of deep reflections originating near the crust-mantle boundary. Preserving lateraI variations along deep reflections is also important for resolving amplitude changes due to geologic causes rather than to artifacts from recording or source conditions. Three relative true-amplitude processing methods (automatic edit, single-trace equalization, and a common-depth-point gather equalization) were applied to the 20-second seismic data of the Great lakes Multidisciplinary Program on Crustal Evolution in order to evaluate the performance of the different techniques. Particular attention was paid to the improvement of signal-to-noise ratio and to the preservation of latera I continuity of the deep reflections. This study indicates that the automatic editing procedure based on the median amplitude of a common-depth-point gather provided substantial signal-to-noise ratio improvement of the seismic profiles. Post-stack amplitude balancing was commonly necessary to maintain the lateral continuity of the deep reflections and to reduce migration noise. The results from these processing strategies confirm the existence of large differences in crustal reflectivities and in the shape and geometry of crust-mantle transition beneath central and western lake Superior.
