Book ADIRONDACK XMAS

Download or read book ADIRONDACK XMAS written by Robert Lavoie and published by Lexingford Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert LaVoie is a writer based in Northern New York--the true Northern New York, north of the Adirondacks. He fell in love with the North Country after being brought to Lake Placid on a family vacation in 1964. He became a Social Studies teacher at St. Regis Falls Central School in 1989. He is now retired and lives in West Stockholm, New York. About AN ADIRONDACK CHRISTMAS: This charming story follows the somewhat whimsical adventures of a retiree as he takes up residence in a Northern New York cabin, only to find his "peace and quiet" disturbed in unexpected and quite wonderful ways. His strategy for retreating from humanity ironically brings him a wealth of human contact and love--in addition to the cherished companionship of a stray dog he acquires (or who acquires him). Beautiful watercolor illustrations are provided by Melody Potter, capturing the spirit of the Adirondacks and the heart of the story. This is a book you will read more than once, and recommend to your friends. If you have traveled in Northern New York, AN ADIRONDACK CHRISTMAS will bring you back to that gorgeous scenery, interesting people, and surprises around each corner.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holiday Tales: Christmas in the Adirondacks A cabin. A cabin in the woods. In the cabin a. Great fire place piled high with logs, fiercely ablaze. On either side of the broad hearthstone a hound sat on his haunches, looking gravely, as only a hound in a meditative mood can, into the glowing fire. In the center of the cabin, whose every nook and corner was bright with the ruddy firelight, stood a wooden table, strongly built and solid. At the table sat John Norton, poring over a book, - a book large of size, with wooden covers bound in leather, brown with age, and smooth as with the handling of many generations. The whitened head of the old man was bowed over the broad page, on which one hand rested, with the forefinger marking the sentence. A cabin in the woods filled with firelight, a table, a book, an old man studying the book. This was the scene on Christmas Eve. Outside, the earth was white with snow, and in the blue sky above the snow was the white moon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Adirondack

Download or read book Adirondack written by Edward Kanze and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probes deeply into Adirondack Mountain lives, both human and otherwise, bringing the area to vivid and colorful life. Born just north of New York City, Edward Kanze traveled as far as the wilds of Australia and New Zealand, working as a naturalist, park ranger, and nature writer, before finally settling in New York’s Adirondacks for the riskiest of all life’s adventures: marriage and children. Adirondack tells the story of how he and his wife, Debbie, bought a tumbledown house, rescued it from ruin, started a family, and planted themselves deep in Adirondack soil. Along the way, he brings the unique history of this area to life by sharing stories of his ancestors, who have lived there for generations, and by offering captivating descriptions of the world around him. A keen observer, Kanze will charm readers with his tales of bears, birds, and fluorescent mice. “Beautifully written and utterly engaging—I savored every incident, every well-wrought sentence.” — Philip G. Terrie, author of Contested Terrain, Second Edition: A New History of Nature and People in the Adirondacks “Adirondack is an absolute delight. If we were all living like the Kanzes, connected to our extended families, the fellow beings we share the biosphere with, the world would be a much healthier and better place.” — Alex Shoumatoff, contributing editor, Vanity Fair “This is a heartfelt and meticulously researched journal of a man returning to and immersing himself in his home in the Adirondack Park. Connecting with history, natural history, and a community of people, Kanze places the conflicting nature philosophies of John Muir and John Burroughs into context in a relevant and poignant way.” — Bernd Heinrich, author of The Homing Instinct: Meaning and Mystery in Animal Migration “The book reads almost like a conversation with a friend, a good-hearted, compassionate, maybe a little old-fashioned, wise, and wonderful friend.” — Mary A. Hood, author of Walking Seasonal Roads

Book Just Everyday Folks

Download or read book Just Everyday Folks written by L.R. Warner and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In L.R. Warners latest publication, Just Everyday Folks, An Adirondack Family 1925 1950, she chronicles the life of her family living in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State during that era. Follow the story of a father who swore it was his duty as a man to make a living for his family, independent from outside help. With this belief came the idea it was his civil right to procure whatever could be gleaned from the land, regardless of environmental rules and regulations. This attitude quickly led to trouble. See a mother as a determined woman able to make do with whatever was available, and expand on any opportunity existing. Death is so very much a part of life, she told her children, conditioning them to face-up to whatever fate had in store. Two brothers age from youthful shenanigans, to walk in their fathers footsteps while learning to hunt, trap, and fish. Everyday living meant having no electricity, no indoor plumbing or centralized heating. Communication was only by snail-mail, which was often read as history by the time it was received. Babies were born at home. Illness was treated with simple remedies, often homemade. Invention was the greater part of recreation. Faith was practiced more through neighborly acts of charity than organized religion. Most holidays recognized today were treated as just another day. These subjects, and others, are written as anecdotes and smack of a life of deprivation for the family, yet as recalled by the author, We did not miss what we never expected to have. L.R. Warners former book, entitled From the Blackest Cloud, is a memorial of life after 1950 for one member of the family. With the Twenty-first Century spirit of giving back, royalties of both books are given to charity; the first to assist children with disabilities in reaching their highest potential, and the second, of Just Everyday Folks, to help brighten the days of residents at an Adirondack nursing home.
