Book Africa s Mineral Fortune

Download or read book Africa s Mineral Fortune written by Saleem H. Ali and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For too long Africa's mineral fortune has been lamented as a resource curse that has led to conflict rather than development for much of the continent. Yet times are changing and the opportunities to bring technical expertise on modern mining alongside appropriate governance mechanisms for social development are becoming more accessible in Africa. This book synthesizes perspectives from multiple disciplines to address Africa’s development goals in relation to its mineral resources. The authors cover ways of addressing a range of policy challenges, environmental concerns, and public health impacts and also consider the role of globalization within the extractive industries. Academic research is coupled with key field vignettes from practitioners exemplifying case studies throughout. The book summarizes the challenges of natural resource governance, suggesting ways in which mining can be more effectively managed in Africa. By providing an analytical framework it highlights the essential intersection between natural and social sciences, central to efficient and effective harnessing of the potential for minerals and mining to be a contributor to positive development in Africa. It will be of interest to policy makers, industry professionals, and researchers in the extractive industries, as well as to the broader development community.

Book Mining and the Law in Africa

Download or read book Mining and the Law in Africa written by Victoria R. Nalule and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mining sector has been an integral part of economic development in many African countries. Although minerals have been exploited for decades in these countries, the benefits have not always been as visible. This has necessitated reforms including nationalisation of mining activities in the distant past; and currently legal and regulatory reforms. This book gives an insight of these reforms and with reference to the fieldwork research undertaken by the author in some African countries, the book highlights the social and environmental impacts of mining activities in Africa. The central question of the book is, why the mining laws have worked in some countries but not others and what can be done to ensure that these laws are effective? Consequently, the book analyses the legal reforms made in the sector and highlights both the challenges and the opportunities for foreign investors as well as the African governments and local communities. The book will be of great interest to researchers and students in Energy and Geography related fields, as well as to practitioners and policy makers.

Book Environmental Impact of Abandoned Mine Waste

Download or read book Environmental Impact of Abandoned Mine Waste written by Claudio Bini and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the dawn of civilisation until the last decades of the past century, mining activity, especially that concerning base and precious metals, represented a resource for human population, owing to its importance in many fields of interest. By the second half of the last century, however, mining activity declined until final closure in the face of developing countries, owing to decreasing mineral resources and to metal price drop. In this book, the effects of former mine activities and the related environmental problems are discussed, with the ultimate goal of investigating the fate of potentially toxic elements in the environment and their impact on the conterminous land.

Book Global Industrial Impacts of Heavy Metal Pollution in Sub Saharan Africa

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book contributes, holistically, to these efforts by presenting the toxic effects of heavy metals to living things from a general viewpoint (Chapter 1) and relating their pollution to industrialization developments in the world (Chapter 2) and in Sub-Saharan Africa region (Chapter 3). The book further discusses the techniques for assaying the heavy metals in environmental samples and particularly, soils (Chapter 4) before discussing how to rate their pollution extent and impacts to the ecology using various indices (Chapter 5). Soil pollution by lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in soils of SSA region is discussed (Chapter 6 - 13). The approaches to manage (Chapter 14) and measures to control and prevent (Chapter 15) heavy metal pollution in soils of the region are also discussed"--

Book Mining in Africa

Download or read book Mining in Africa written by Punam Chuhan-Pole and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the local and regional impact of large-scale gold mining in Africa in the context of a mineral boom in the region since 2000. It contributes to filling a gap in the literature on the welfare effects of mineral resources, which, until now, has concentrated more on the national or macroeconomic impacts. Economists have long been intrigued by the paradox that a rich endowment of natural resources may retard economic performance, particularly in the case of mineral-exporting developing countries. Studies of this phenomenon, known as the “resource curse,†? examine the economy-wide consequences of mineral exports.1 Africa’s resource boom has lifted growth, but has been less successful in improving people’s welfare. Yet much of the focus in academic and policy circles has been on appropriate management of the macro-fiscal and governance risks that have historically undermined development outcomes. This study focuses instead on the fortune of local communities where resources are located. It aims to better inform public policy and corporate behavior on the welfare of communities in Africa in which the extraction of resources takes place.

Book Mining in Africa

Download or read book Mining in Africa written by Bonnie Campbell and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2009-06-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continent of Africa is rich in minerals needed by Western economies, but rather than forming the basis for economic growth the mining industry contributes very little to African development Investigating the impact of the 2003 Extractive Industries Review on a number of African countries, the contributors find the root of the problem in the controls imposed on the African countries by the IMF and World Bank. They aim to convince academics, governments and industry that regulation needs to be reformed to create a mining industry favourable towards social, economic and environmental development. The book takes a multidisciplinary approach and provides a historical perspective of each country, making it ideal for students of development studies and development organizations.
