Book Studies in Classical Hebrew

Download or read book Studies in Classical Hebrew written by Moshe Bar-Asher and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-08-22 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Moshe Bar-Asher, Professor Emeritus at the Hebrew University and long-time president of the Academy of the Hebrew Language, has published more than 200 articles and sixteen books and edited aboout 90 books and collections. The vast majority of his work has been accessible, however, only to specialists who read modern Hebrew or French. Bar-Asher’s groundbreaking articles on the dialects of rabbinic literature are classics. In more recent years he has brought the same breadth and depth of grammatical knowledge, and philological acumen, to the study of older classical Hebrew texts, including literary and epigraphic texts. This volume presents studies of individual words and verses within the Bible, as well as broader thematic discussions of biblical language and its long reception-history, down through medieval scribes and modern lexicographers. Also represented are Bar-Asher’s penetrating studies of Qumran texts and languages, which illuminate both the linguistic traditions reflected in these texts and the scribal culture from which they emerged. The third section contains studies of Mishnaic Hebrew. There are both sweeping surveys of the field and its accomplishments and challenges, and studies of specific phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical features.

Book Notes Explanatory and Practical on the Epistle to the Hebrews Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes Explanatory and Practical on the Epistle to the Hebrews Classic Reprint written by Albert Barnes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes, Explanatory and Practical, on the Epistle to the Hebrews It purports to have been written to the Hebrews. This is not found, indeed, in the body of the epistle, though it occurs in tlie subscription at the end. It difl'ers from all the other epistles of Paul in this respect, and from most of the others in the New Testament. In all of the other epistles of Paul, the church or person to whom the letter was sent is specified in the commencement. This, however, commences in the form of an essay or he. Mily; nor is there anywhere in the epistle any direct intimation to what church it was sent. The subscription at the end is of no authority, as it can not be supposed that the author himself would afiix it to the epistle, and as it is known that many of those subscriptions are false. See the remarks at the close of the N otes on Romans, and I. Corinthians. Several questions present themselves here which we may briefly investigate. Book Biblical Lexicology Hebrew and Greek

Download or read book Biblical Lexicology Hebrew and Greek written by Eberhard Bons and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lexicography, together with grammatical studies and textual criticism, forms the basis of biblical exegesis. Recent decades have seen much progress in this field, yet increasing specialization also tends to have the paradoxical effect of turning exegesis into an independent discipline, while leaving lexicography to the experts. The present volume seeks to renew and intensify the exchange between the study of words and the study of texts. This is done in reference to both the Hebrew source text and the earliest Greek translation, the Septuagint. Questions addressed in the contributions to this volume are how linguistic meaning is effected, how it relates to words, and how words may be translated into another language, in Antiquity and today. Etymology, semantic fields, syntagmatic relations, word history, neologisms and other subthemes are discussed. The main current and prospective projects of biblical lexicology or lexicography are presented, thus giving an idea of the state of the art. Some of the papers also open up wider perspectives of interpretation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostolical Authority of the Epistle to the Hebrews 'The wise and well-couched order of Saint Paul's own words.' - Milton. 'Every man whatever has a peculiar style, which may be discovered by nice examination and comparison... Those who have a style of eminent excellence, such as Dryden and Milton, can always be distinguished.' - Dr. Samuel Johnson. 'What submission is due to the doubts of antiquity, when we have only the doubt transmitted to us, without the reasons upon which it was grounded, I need not inquire; but, surely, when we have the reasons of the doubt preserved, we have a very good right to judge and inquire for ourselves: and this happens to be the case here... The whole doubt is founded upon a piece of criticism, started at first, probably, by some man of learning and figure, and followed implicitly by others.' - Bishop Sherlock, Dissertation on the authenticity of II. Peter. 'Who is able or willing to demonstrate the impossibility of advancing religious education; of improving theological language; or of contributing to unfold, by some new discovery, the subtle mechanism and organization of the Bible?' - Phelan's Remains. Book The Schizoid Nature of Modern Hebrew

Download or read book The Schizoid Nature of Modern Hebrew written by Paul Wexler and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 1990 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hebrew is regarded as a former living language which ceased to be a native language 1800 years ago, only to be given a spoken function anew in the late 19th century. Since the re-acquisition of a lost colloquial function has never been documented, Modern Hebrew has become an object of fascination among linguists and laymen alike. In this book the author claims- Modern Hebrew is not a direct continuation of monolingual Semitic Hebrew- Modern Hebrew was created when Yiddish speaker re-lexified their language to Biblical and Mishnaic Hebrew- Yiddish is a Slavic language, derived from Sorbian and thus, Modern Hebrew is a Slavic LanguageThese claims raise a number of interesting questions: why do most speakers believe that Modern Hebrew is a Semitic language, what are the contributions of Modern Hebrew to the typology of diglossia, historical and genetic linguistics, universal grammar, 2nd language acquisition and political science?
