The virus itself appears to be in the supposed antidote, just'as many officinal remedies when given in ex cess, become the most deadly poison. Cases are on record where too much common salt has destroyed life; and there is such a thing as being righteous overmuch. None of the schools of the European peoples are grounded like ours on the secular theory of the state. I conceive that the basis of our state system of schools is valid, and that the educa tional function of the state, without pretending to exclu siveness, admits of an irrefutable vindication.
