Years later, as a United Nations researcher, he witnessed the chaotic deployment of international forces to Africa, the Balkans, and South Asia, and the transformation of territorial, labor-intensive uprisings into the international insurgent networks we know today. After 9/11, Mackinlay turned his eye toward the Muslim communities of Europe and institutional efforts to prevent terrorism. In particular, he investigates military expeditions to Iraq and Afghanistan and their effect on the social cohesion of European populations that include Muslims from these regions. Citizens have become accidental journalists thanks to their handheld devices, politicians are increasingly working online, and the traditional sites of democracy - assemblies, public galleries, and plazas - are becoming less and less relevant with every new technology. And yet, this book argues, such views are leading us to confuse the medium with the message, focusing on electronic transmission when often what cyber citizens transmit is pictures and narratives of real democratic action in physical space. Democratic citizens are embodied, take up space, battle over access to physical resources, and perform democracy on physical stages at least as much as they engage with ideas in virtual space. Combining conceptual analysis with interviews and observation in capital cities on every continent, John Parkinson argues that democracy requires physical public space; that some kinds of space are better for performing some democratic roles than others; and that some of the most valuable kinds of space are under attack in developed democracies. He argues that accidental publics like shoppers and lunchtime crowds are increasingly valued over purposive, active publics, over citizens with a point to make or an argument to listen to. This can be seen not just in the way that traditional protest is regulated, but in the ways that ordinary city streets and parks are managed, even in the design of such quintessentially democratic spaces as legislative assemblies. The book offers an alternative vision for democratic public space, and evaluates 11 cities - from London to Tokyo - against that ideal.

Given that British fascism was a phenomenon of the inter-war period, first making its appearance shortly after the Irish question had been constitutionally settled by the creation of the Irish Free State and the autonomous entity of Northern Ireland, it has been understandable that British historians should focus chiefly on developments in Britain. In the process, however, Northern Ireland as a site of fascist interest and activity has been largely overlooked; yet it engaged the attention of all the significant fascist movements, from Rotha Lintorn-Orman's British Fascists and Sir Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists to the less significant Imperial Fascist League in the inter-war period, Mosley's Union Movement in the post-war period and the National Front and British National Party during the period of the Troubles, together with smaller formations thereafter. In focusing on Northern Ireland, this study provides insights into the strengths and weaknesses of British fascist organisations throughout the twentieth century. It also demonstrates that the region was an extremely difficult terrain for those organisations to cultivate, whether they were supportive of nationalism/republicanism or Unionism/loyalism.

Book excerpt: Margaret Anna Cusack (1832-1899), who also wrote as MFC, Sister, Mary Frances Cusack, and Vigilant, was a Catholic nun and the founder of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace. She was a strong advocate for the poor and oppressed, especially women. At the age of 29 she was received into the Catholic Church and immediatey joined the Poor Clares in Newry, County Down. During her stay at Kenmare she dedicated herself to her writings, which ranged from biographies of saints to pamphlets on social issues. She wrote 35 books, including many popular, pious and sentimental texts on private devotions, poems, Irish history and biography and founded Kenmare Publications, through which 200,000 volumes of her works were issued in under ten years. Chief amongst her works are: A Student's History of Ireland (1870), Woman's Work in Modern Society (1872), The Liberator (1872), The Pilgrim's Way to Heaven (1873), The Book of the Blessed Ones (1874), A Nun's Advice to Her Girls (1877) and St. Patrick, St. Columba, and St. Bridget (1877). Two autobiographies are The Nun of Kenmare (1888) and The Story of My Life (1893).
