Book excerpt: Excerpt from Additional Hymns With Tunes: For Use With Any Other Church Hymnal As its name implies, this book is designed for use with, and not in place of, other Church Hymnals. Hence those hymns which are found in all such books, and without which no Church Hymnal would be complete, are not included. For a similar reason, the hymns are here numbered from 801, so that the numbers may not interfere with the use of any other hymn book, no other Church hymn book having as many as even seven hundred hymns. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns of the Kingdom of God: With Tunes Each generation of Christians emphasizes a particular aspect of the everlasting Gospel. Our own lays the stress upon the Kingdom of God. We have been led to believe that, as the Kingdom was the burden of our Lord's message, it should be the burden of His Church's prayer and praise. This book is an attempt to furnish the Church with a hymnal in which Christian communion with God is viewed as fellowship with the Father and the Son in the establishment of the Kingdom. The editors have sought to make a small collection of large hymns. We have carefully examined several thousand hymns which have found a place in the worship of English-speaking churches during the last two hundred years. We have respected the sacred canon of Christian experience. We have felt that the older and the more widely used a hymn is, the more suited is it to common worship, and the better adapted to manifest and to promote the unity of the Church of Christ. We have striven, however, to include only hymns which are poetically beautiful, winch express a normal and healthy spiritual experience, contain no divisive theology, and are specifically Christian in religion. In arranging the music we have been governed by the principle that it is better to select than to multiply tunes. The average congregation should find no difficulty in using all the tunes in this hook. Most of them are already familiar. There are some new tunes, but few of these are of recent composition. The great English composers of Church music of the last century are well represented, and the book contains a large number of older tunes, -traditional German, English, French, Welsh and Dutch melodies, and tunes from the Genevan, Scottish and American psalters. We have tried to set the hymns to those tunes which have proved best fitted to bring out their meaning with effectiveness and dignity. Wherever possible we have placed hymns of the same metre upon opposite pages in order to offer a choice of music. The text of each hymn has been traced back, as far as we were able, to its first edition. All changes have been carefully noted. Book Hymn and Tune Book for Use in Old School or Primitive Baptist Churches

Download or read book Hymn and Tune Book for Use in Old School or Primitive Baptist Churches written by Silas H. Durand and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymn and Tune Book for Use in Old School or Primitive Baptist Churches In response to many requests we have prepared this book to supply a need long felt in our churches. We hope our principal motive in the work has been a desire for the benefit of the Lord's people, and for his own declarative glory. We have endeavored to select such hymns and tunes as are most commonly used in churches of our faith and order in all the different sections of the country. In the selection of hymns our first care has been that every sentiment expressed should be in harmony with the truth of God, believing that "Christians should never sing what they do not believe to be true." We have also chosen those that express the common experience of the saints, and which breathe a spirit of praise and holy devotion to God, rather than such as appeal to the natural sympathies, regarding them as more suitable to the purpose for which this book is designed, which is, to be used in the meetings of the saints, whose only object in singing should be the worship of the true and living God in spirit and in truth. In the association of hymns and tunes we have in some instances had respect to long use; in others we have determined the arrangement according to our own judgment, and the character of melody preferred in different localities. Should any fail to find in this book some favorite hymn or tune, as may sometimes be the case, we hope they will find others equally desirable, and will remember the impossibility of an arrangement of so small a number that would contain the favorites of all. We hope for the favorable consideration of our brethren, and humbly ask and hope that our own imperfect labors may be blessed of the Lord to his dear people. Book Plymouth Collection of Hymns and Tunes

Download or read book Plymouth Collection of Hymns and Tunes written by Henry Ward Beecher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plymouth Collection of Hymns and Tunes: For the Use of Christian Congregations The book here presented to Christians and Churches numbers more than thirteen hundred hymns, and three hundred and sixty-seven tunes. The work is the result of a conviction that Congregational Singing best answers the end of worship by means of song, A choir should not sing for the congregation, but incite them to sing, and lead the way. It Is hoped that a book which shall present both the hymns and the music will contribute to the development of Congregational Singing, by providing the materials for it. Although the work will not specially benefit those who have never been taught to read music, yet every year musical instruction in schools and in the community at large is increasing the number of those who can read plain music with facility. Already, and especially among the young, the number vho might use such a work as this is very considerable. It is desirable that every pew in the church should contain one or more copies of the Hymn and Time Book. The Hymns have, however, been printed without the music, at a cheaper rate, for the use of those who wish only hymns. We submit a few words in respect to the Hymns and the Music. I. - The Hymns 1. No pains have been spared in collecting materials for this work. The principal collections of Psalms and Hymns that have been published, either in America or Great Britain, have been carefully searched, and the fugitive pieces which have appeared in religious journals, or in collected poetical works of recent authors, have been made to contribute to the store. A hymn is a lyrical discourse to the feelings. It should either excite or express feeling. The recitation of historical facts, descriptions of scenery, narrations of events, meditations, all may tend to inspire feeling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns of the Faith: With Psalms for the Use of Congregations Another hymn and tune book is justified and even demanded by the rapid development of church music in recent years, and by an accompanying improvement in the choice and use of hymns. During the last twenty years, especially, the number of fine and noble musical compositions has been constantly increasing. The new music has, in turn, called out many hymns which are among the best in the language, and are destined to hold a permanent place. There is, besides, a more discriminating judgment of the vast number of hymns found in earlier collections. The materials, therefore, for compiling a hymn and tune book have never before been so ample and various. "Hymns of the Faith" has been prepared under the guidance of distinct and consistent principles. It is not a revision of some existing book with better tunes of the modern school introduced here and there, but is a fresh work from beginning to end, adapted to the enrichment of congregational singing according to the best methods. In churches which have no prescribed liturgy, the improvement of public worship is to be expected chiefly in the direction of congregational singing and chanting. Without making radical changes in the simplicity of non-liturgical worship, it Is entirely practicable, now that so much fine music is available, to secure the participation of the people by a more liberal use of sacred song. Hymns. The order of topical arrangement is determined by the Apostles' Creed, which has suggested the title of the book, and has also determined the proportion of its various parts. The great facts and truths of Christianity accordingly come first: God the Father Almighty, Christ the Saviour, the Holy Ghost, the Church, the Communion of Saints; and afterwards the Salvation and Experience of believers, the Forgiveness of Sins, including the new life in its beginning and progress, which reaches on to the Resurrection and the Life Everlasting. To these are added hymns for the Lord's Day, Morning, Evening, and other Times and Seasons, Children's Hymns, and Ancient and Scriptural Hymns. The selection of hymns has been determined throughout by the needs of public worship. No hymns have been admitted, however excellent as religious poetry, which are not available for singing. The omission of certain hymns, which have heretofore retained a place, and which may be missed, has been made for sufficient reasons. Some are passing out of use, some are not suited to public worship, some have been replaced by better hymns on the same topic. The original versions have been preserved, except when changes have become too familiar to be disturbed, or are obvious improvements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Hymnal: Hymns With Tunes for the Services of the Church It is not without reason that the compiler has presumed to name the present little volume The Christian Hymnal. The hymns herein contained arc addressed solely to the Lord Jesus Christ in. His Divine Humanity as the only God of heaven and earth, "in whom," as the Apostle has said, "dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily." The sublime doctrine of the Oneness of God and of his absolute Identity with our blessed Lord and Saviour, a doctrine which Prophets, Evangelists and Apostles unite in declaring in the Holy Scriptures, is that which the compiler has endeavored, before all else, to have set forth in this volume of hymns. With a view to preparing for the use of ail sincere worshippers of the Lord Jesus Christ a Hymnal which shall, therefore, embody the doctrine that He is the Incarnate Jehovah, and that in Him resides the fullness of the blessed Trinity, Father. Son and Holy Spirit, constituting His trinal nature of Love, Wisdom and Divine Proceeding, the compiler has not scrupled to modify or omit expressions of an import contrary to this doctrine, whenever they have been met with in the hymns selected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coronation Hymnal: A Selection of Hymns and Songs This Hymn Book is the outcome of an extended and successful experi ment in Congregational Singing, nearly all the pieces which it contains having been tested by actual use. This experiment has demonstrated two things: viz. Ist, That in order to put a book into the hands of every member of the Congregation a sine qua 72072 to the highest success - a smaller and less expensive hymnal than those now generally in use is imperatively demanded; 2d, That with the quickened pace of spiritual activity now visible in the Church, there is a call for a more rapid movement in the service of song. With a view of meeting these requirements we present the Coronation Hymnal to the public. It claims to be a selection rather than a collection. But though small and compact, it has undertaken to present the best and most widely accepted standard hymns and tunes in use in all our churches, combining with these an ample selection of the lively and stirring melodies known as gospel songs. This combination has been found to work so well in actual experience by meeting the demand of the most critical as well as the most popular taste, that our book is sent forth with strong confidence that it will meet a real need.
