Book Integrating Past and Present

Download or read book Integrating Past and Present written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture is an expression appropriate to its time, and adaptive reuse is a tool that can be utilized in the exploration of how to add to the existing fabric of a structure in order to continue the story of the building while still speaking to time and tradition. Although this approach of restoration has been exploited for years, in what ways are reuse and adaptation acceptable means for allowing creativity and innovation to take its place in the history of a building? Through the study of texts by various theorists and the works of Carlo Scarpa and Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates among others, the topic of creating a narrative of a building will be explored. Discussion will involve capitalizing on a building's history, exploiting present functions and leaving room for future interpretation. The gradual sequence of change and integration of present day ideas, perceptions, and designs with existing building elements will be implemented while examining the old YMCA building on Calhoun Street in Clifton, Ohio. Through this study, a new dimension will be added to the thesis inquiry as to how to approach adaptive reuse not as a way in which to impose new forms and expressions onto existing structures, but as a technique used to add to the continual evolution of a building.

Book Socio economic and Political Issues in the Successful Adaptive Reuse of Churches

Download or read book Socio economic and Political Issues in the Successful Adaptive Reuse of Churches written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As development flows from the urban core to suburban lands, some historic buildings, once the centerpiece of neighborhood focus and gathering, are left in neglect and disrepair. The unique floor plans and construction of churches make them especially vulnerable to decline when congregations move to new locations. Nevertheless, some church buildings nationwide have been adopted by new owners and converted into every conceivable use: restaurant, retail, residential, community center, office building. This work explores socio-economic and/or political variables present in successful adaptive church reuse projects for the purpose of guiding future planning and public policy initiatives. A literature review was conducted on the changing role of churches, the ties between adaptive reuse and economic development, and finally the lessons that the existing literature on adaptive reuse can bring to vacant churches. The literature review revealed five factors of key importance in the success of adaptive reuse projects: location, availability of funding incentives, real estate values, historic designation, and community commitment. The factors were investigated in a multiple-case study of three attempted church adaptive reuse projects in Cincinnati, Ohio - two successful and one that ended in demolition. The cases chosen were similar to St. Martin's, a vacant church in the Sedamsville neighborhood of Cincinnati, so that the lessons learned would be applicable to it. The patterns found through analysis of the case studies indicate that of the five factors studied, the availability of funding and the presence of community support are of primary importance in successful adaptive church reuse. These lessons contributed to an enhanced understanding that St. Martin's faces large obstacles to reuse. Recommendations for the church included increasing community support, and considering any commercial endeavors within the context of the neighborhood demand. These findings and recommendations can provide guidance to other vacant churches as well. The lessons learned through the investigation indicate that more proactive planning techniques are necessary - both to incorporate historic preservation and economic development into land use planning, and to consider economically viable uses for community resources such as vacant church buildings before they are in danger of being lost.

Book Building Evaluation for Adaptive Reuse and Preservation

Download or read book Building Evaluation for Adaptive Reuse and Preservation written by J. Stanley Rabun and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-01-09 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is designed for architects and engineers who need to evaluate existing buildings for a new use or for continuing a current use. It details each step of the evaluation process using an easy-to-follow and easy-to-implement approach that greatly reduces the possibility of unexpected costs and setbacks. Moreover, the book covers every part of the building itself, from interior and exterior structures to systems and materials." "Illustrations throughout the book will help you visualize and perform key procedures. In addition, the authors examine building evaluation issues for structures of different scales, such as medium and small commercial structures and residential buildings." "Most important, the authors help you assess the financial viability of a proposed adaptive reuse or preservation project, helping you and potential investors decide whether the proposed project offers a desired return on investment."--Jacket.

Book Preservation Beyond Designation the Adaptive Reuse of Noble Elementary School

Download or read book Preservation Beyond Designation the Adaptive Reuse of Noble Elementary School written by Rachel M. Stucke (|eauthor) and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive reuse is a preservation tool that goes beyond the bounds of historic designation via local or state landmark status or National Register of Historic Places distinction. It preserves buildings and the memories associated with them, and at the same time provides economic, environmental, and social benefits. In the case of Noble Elementary School in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, adaptive reuse is currently one of the only options for its preservation due to its ineligibility for the National Register. This thesis unveils the history of Cleveland Heights, the Noble neighborhood, and Noble Elementary School; the feasibility assessment for Noble Elementary School based on Donovan Rypkema's Feasibility Assessment Manual for Reusing Historic Buildings; case studies and reuse examples that help determine possible reuse plans for Noble Elementary School; and final recommendations. Ultimately, the feasibility assessment is a relevant planning tool that can help preserve the school beyond the realms of historic designation.

Book excerpt: Building in existing fabric requires more than practical solutions and stylistic skills. The adaptive reuse of buildings, where changes in the structure go along with new programs and functions, poses the fundamental question of how the past should be included in the design for the future. On the background of long years of teaching and publishing, and using vivid imagery from Frankenstein to Rem Koolhaas and beyond, the author provides a comprehensive introduction to architectural design for adaptive reuse projects. History and theory, building typology, questions of materials and construction, aspects of preservation, urban as well as interior design are dealt with in ways that allow to approach adaptive reuse as a design practice field of its own right.

Book Retrofitting Suburbia Updated Edition

Download or read book Retrofitting Suburbia Updated Edition written by Ellen Dunham-Jones and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated with a new Introduction by the authors and a foreword by Richard Florida, this book is a comprehensive guide book for urban designers, planners, architects, developers, environmentalists, and community leaders that illustrates how existing suburban developments can be redesigned into more urban and more sustainable places. While there has been considerable attention by practitioners and academics to development in urban cores and new neighborhoods on the periphery of cities, there has been little attention to the redesign and redevelopment of existing suburbs. The authors, both architects and noted experts on the subject, show how development in existing suburbs can absorb new growth and evolve in relation to changed demographic, technological, and economic conditions. Retrofitting Suburbia was named winner in the Architecture & Urban Planning category of the 2009 American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (The PROSE Awards) awarded by The Professional and Scholarly Publishing (PSP) Division of the Association of American Publishers
