Book Water Management in New Zealand s Canterbury Region

Download or read book Water Management in New Zealand s Canterbury Region written by Bryan R. Jenkins and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-06 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is designed to achieve two major purposes. The first is to describe the developments in water management policy in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand. The strategic approach, the collaborative engagement, and, the nested adaptive systems approach represent a paradigm shift in water management in New Zealand. The second is to delineate the sustainability framework that underpins the Canterbury approach. The framework is based on the concept of developing sustainability strategies to address critical failure pathways. While the focus of the book is on Canterbury, comparative applications of the framework to issues in other parts of New Zealand and international issues are proposed. The book can be used in at least two ways. The first is the application of a sustainability framework to the management of water in Canterbury region. The second is the exposition of a sustainability framework that can be applied to the management of water in a region with the application to Canterbury as an illustrative case study.

Book The Realities of Adaptive Groundwater Management

Download or read book The Realities of Adaptive Groundwater Management written by William Blomquist and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has three primary objectives. The first objective is to provide scholars with a more realistic view of adaptive management, without arguing against adaptive management. Adaptive management is necessary as well as desirable, but it is not easy, and demonstrating that through the Chino Basin experience is an important goal. The second objective is to provide practitioners with encouraging yet cautionary lessons about the challenges and benefits of an adaptive approach - in similar fashion as the first objective, the goal here is to endorse the adaptive approach but in a clear-eyed manner that clarifies how hard it is and how much it requires. A third objective is to show all audiences that resource governance systems can fail, change, and succeed. There is no such thing as an ideal institutional design that is guaranteed to work; rather, making institutional arrangements work entails learning and adjustment when they begin to show problems as they inevitably will. .

This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater allocation determines who is able to use groundwater resources, how, when and where. It directly affects the value (economic, ecological, socio-cultural) that individuals and society obtain from groundwater, today and in the future. Building on the 2015 OECD publication Water Resources Allocation: Sharing Risks and Opportunities, this report focuses on groundwater and how its allocation can be improved in terms of economic efficiency, environmental effectiveness and social equity. Drawing on an analysis of groundwater's distinctive features and nine case studies of groundwater allocation in a range of countries, the report provides practical policy guidance for groundwater allocation in the form of a "health check". This health check can be used to assess the performance of current arrangements and manage the transition towards improved allocation.

Book The Water Thieves

  • Author : Sam Mahon
  • Publisher : Longacre Press
  • Release : 2006-09-29
  • ISBN : 9781877361517
  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book The Water Thieves written by Sam Mahon and published by Longacre Press. This book was released on 2006-09-29 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Water Thieves is a passionate and engaging account of a year in the author's life. Galvanised into action by the realisation that the wetlands and streams all around him have begun to wither, Sam Mahon embarks on a year of involvement in local body politics. This memoir charts the frustrations, relationships, and confl icts, as well as the need for wild invention when he agrees to run for Council. Mahon's descriptions of the natural world rival those from our best poets. Yet when he describes the real nuts and bolts of politics: council meetings, memos, phone trees, protests, working with fellow environmentalists, he's also a comically disarming and often blistering, social satirist. His energy for sustaining a fi ght in the face of maddening obstruction is prodigious. Mahon's techniques for gaining councillor and media attention are hilarious, bloody-minded and bold: from pyrotechnics to mock funerals; from stabbingly witty speeches to asking those in power to put their politics where their immediate health is, demonstrates all the qualities of the fi rebrand. This memoir is poetry, expose, elegy, Shakespearean comedy, drama and protest song. Mahon weaves the world of the artist and the world of the environmental activist with skill and immediacy. His comments on human nature, including his own, makes for some hilarious, and sobering, moments. The Water Thieves is an astonishing and intensely interesting account concerning one of our most valuable natural resources. It is skilfully and passionately written with an individual and honest voice: a new voice in the literary non-fi ction genre of memoir.
