Book Detecting Adaptive Inverse Models in the Central Nervous System

Download or read book Detecting Adaptive Inverse Models in the Central Nervous System written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aimed to find evidence for the formation of an internal inverse model of a novel visuomotor relationship for feedforward control in the brain. An experiment was carried out involving 20 normal adult subjects who performed a pursuit random tracking task with a steering wheel for input. During learning, the response cursor was periodically blanked, removing all feedback about the external system (i.e., about the relationship between hand motion and response cursor motion). Results showed a transfer of learning from the unblanked runs to the blanked runs for a static nonlinear system (linear trend RMS error F(1,19) 5.05, p .037) thereby demonstrating adaptive feedforward control in the nervous system. This result provides the strongest evidence to date that the brain adaptively tunes inverse models of external controlled systems during motor learning. No such transfer was observed for a dynamic linear system, indicating a dominant adaptive feedback control component. Results are consistent with inverse modeling and suggest a combination of feedforward and feedback adaptive control in the brain.

Book Adaptive Inverse Modeling of a Shape Memory Alloy Wire Actuator and Tracking Control with the Model

Download or read book Adaptive Inverse Modeling of a Shape Memory Alloy Wire Actuator and Tracking Control with the Model written by Bong Su Koh and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that the Preisach model is useful to approximate the effect of hysteresis behavior in smart materials, such as piezoactuators and Shape Memory Alloy(SMA) wire actuators. For tracking control, many researchers estimate a Preisach model and then compute its inverse model for hysteresis compensation. However, the inverse of its hysteresis behavior also shows hysteresis behavior. From this idea, the inverse model with Kransnoselskii-Pokrovskii(KP) model, a developed version of Preisach model, can be used directly for SMA position control and avoid the inverse operation. Also, we propose another method for the tracking control by approximating the inverse model using an orthogonal polynomial network. To estimate and update the weight parameters in both inverse models, a gradient-based learning algorithm is used. Finally, for the SMA position control, PID controller, adaptive controllers with KP model and adaptive nonlinear inverse model controller are compared experimentally.

Book Adaptive Inverse Control

Download or read book Adaptive Inverse Control written by Eugene Walach and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book blends the areas of adaptive inverse control and signal processing in ways not presented in any other book, allowing engineers in both fields to share tools and techniques. In the words of one reviewer, "The philosophy is quite refreshing and should entice signal processing specialists to delve more into control, and control theorists to revisit many of their current assumptions and methodologies." Clearly and intuitively written, the book presents theory, but its emphasis is on practical applications and common sense understanding. Most chapters include a summary at its end as a way of consolidating the information presented. The book's first chapter features an overview of the book's contents written to use jargon only sparingly (and always explaining it where used). The book enables signal processing people to solve control problems and teaches signal processing methods, particularly adaptive signal processing, and makes them available to control engineers. There is no other book that does control and signal processing as this book does. Theory is presented, but the emphasis is on practical applications and common sense understanding. The ideas are presented to appeal to the intuition. Insight and intuition are often hard to find in the control and signal-processing literature. Defeating obscurity was one of the main objectives of the authors in writing the text.

Book Applications of Neural Adaptive Control Technology

Download or read book Applications of Neural Adaptive Control Technology written by Jens Kalkkuhl and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results of the second workshop on Neural Adaptive Control Technology, NACT II, held on September 9-10, 1996, in Berlin. The workshop was organised in connection with a three-year European-Union-funded Basic Research Project in the ESPRIT framework, called NACT, a collaboration between Daimler-Benz (Germany) and the University of Glasgow (Scotland). The NACT project, which began on 1 April 1994, is a study of the fundamental properties of neural-network-based adaptive control systems. Where possible, links with traditional adaptive control systems are exploited. A major aim is to develop a systematic engineering procedure for designing neural controllers for nonlinear dynamic systems. The techniques developed are being evaluated on concrete industrial problems from within the Daimler-Benz group of companies. The aim of the workshop was to bring together selected invited specialists in the fields of adaptive control, nonlinear systems and neural networks. The first workshop (NACT I) took place in Glasgow in May 1995 and was mainly devoted to theoretical issues of neural adaptive control. Besides monitoring further development of theory, the NACT II workshop was focused on industrial applications and software tools. This context dictated the focus of the book and guided the editors in the choice of the papers and their subsequent reshaping into substantive book chapters. Thus, with the project having progressed into its applications stage, emphasis is put on the transfer of theory of neural adaptive engineering into industrial practice. The contributors are therefore both renowned academics and practitioners from major industrial users of neurocontrol.

Book A Model Following Inverse Controller with Adaptive Compensation for General Aviation Aircraft

Download or read book A Model Following Inverse Controller with Adaptive Compensation for General Aviation Aircraft written by Hugh S. Bruner and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Author's abstract] The theory for an adaptive inverse flight controller, suitable for use on General Aviation aircraft, is developed in this research. The objectives of this controller are to separate the normally coupled modes of the basic aircraft and thereby permit direct control of airspeed and flight-path angle, meet prescribed performance characteristics as defined by damping ratio and natural frequency, adapt to uncertainties in the physical plant, and be computationally efficient. The three basic elements of the controller are a linear prefilter, an inverse transfer function, and an adaptive neural network compensator. The linear prefilter shapes accelerations required of the overall system in order to achieve the desired system performance characteristics. The inverse transfer function is used to compute the aircraft control inputs required to achieve the necessary accelerations. The adaptive neural network compensator is used to compensate for modeling errors during design or real-time changes in the physical plant. This architecture is patterned after the work of Calise, but differs by not requiring dynamic feedback of the state variables. The controller is coded in ANSI C and integrated with a simulation of a typical General Aviation aircraft. Twenty-three cases are simulated to prove that the objectives for the controller are met. Among these cases are simulated stability and controllability failures in the physical plant, as well as several simulated failures of the neural network. With the exception of some bounded speed-tracking error, the controller is capable of continued flight with any foreseeable failure of the neural network. Recommendations are provided for follow-on investigations by other researchers.
