Book Adaptive Integrated Guidance and Control Design for Line of Sight Based Formation Flight

Download or read book Adaptive Integrated Guidance and Control Design for Line of Sight Based Formation Flight written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents an integrated guidance and control design for formation flight using a combination of adaptive output feedback and backstepping techniques without an underlying time-scale separation assumption. We formulate the problem as an adaptive output feedback control problem for a line-of-sight (LOS) based formation flight configuration of a leader and a follower aircraft. The design objective is to regulate range and two bearing angle rates while maintaining turn coordination. Adaptive neural networks are trained online with available measurements to compensate for unmodeled nonlinearities in the design process. These include uncertainties due to unknown leader aircraft acceleration, and the modeling error due to parametric uncertainties in the aircraft aerodynamic derivatives. One benefit of this approach is that the guidance and flight control design process is integrated. Simulation results using a nonlinear 6DOF simulation model are presented to illustrate the efficacy of the approach by comparing the performance with a time-scale separation based design.

Book Adaptive Estimation and Control with Application to Vision based Autonomous Formation Flight

Download or read book Adaptive Estimation and Control with Application to Vision based Autonomous Formation Flight written by Ramachandra Jayant Sattigeri and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of vision as an additional sensing mechanism has received a lot of attention in recent years in the context of autonomous flight applications. Modern Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are equipped with vision sensors because of their light-weight, low-cost characteristics and also their ability to provide a rich variety of information of the environment in which the UAVs are navigating in. The problem of vision based autonomous flight is very difficult and challenging since it requires bringing together concepts from image processing and computer vision, target tracking and state estimation, and flight guidance and control. This thesis focuses on the adaptive state estimation, guidance and control problems involved in vision-based formation flight. Specifically, the thesis presents a composite adaptation approach to the partial state estimation of a class of nonlinear systems with unmodeled dynamics. In this approach, a linear time-varying Kalman filter is the nominal state estimator which is augmented by the output of an adaptive neural network (NN) that is trained with two error signals. The benefit of the proposed approach is in its faster and more accurate adaptation to the modeling errors over a conventional approach. The thesis also presents two approaches to the design of adaptive guidance and control (G & C) laws for line-of-sight formation flight. In the first approach, the guidance and autopilot systems are designed separately and then combined together by assuming time-scale separation. The second approach is based on integrating the guidance and autopilot design process. The developed G & C laws using both approaches are adaptive to unmodeled leader aircraft acceleration and to own aircraft aerodynamic uncertainties. The thesis also presents theoretical justification based on Lyapunov-like stability analysis for integrating the adaptive state estimation and adaptive G & C designs. All the developed designs are validated in nonlinear, 6DOF fixed-wing aircraft simulations. Finally, the thesis presents a decentralized coordination strategy for vision-based multiple-aircraft formation control. In this approach, each aircraft in formation regulates range from up to two nearest neighboring aircraft while simultaneously tracking nominal desired trajectories common to all aircraft and avoiding static obstacles.

Book Mission based Guidance System Design for Autonomous UAVs

Download or read book Mission based Guidance System Design for Autonomous UAVs written by Jongki Moon and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advantages of UAVs in the aviation arena have led to extensive research activities on autonomous technology of UAVs to achieve specific mission objectives. This thesis mainly focuses on the development of a mission-based guidance system. Among various missions expected of UAVs for future needs, autonomous formation flight (AFF) and obstacle avoidance within safe operation limits are investigated. In the design of an adaptive guidance system for AFF, the leader information except position is assumed to be unknown to a follower. Thus, the only measured information related to the leader is the line-of-sight range and angle. Adding an adaptive element with neural networks into the guidance system provides a capability to effectively handle leader's velocity changes. Therefore, this method can be applied to the AFF control systems that use passive sensing methods. The simulation and flight test results clearly show that the adaptive guidance control system is a promising solution for autonomous formation flight of UAVs. The successful flight evaluations using the GTMax rotary wing UAV also demonstrate unique maneuvering aspects associated with rotary wing UAVs in formation flight.

Book An Adaptive Approach to Vision Based Formation Control

Download or read book An Adaptive Approach to Vision Based Formation Control written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In considering the problem of formation control in the deployment of intelligent munitions, it would be highly desirable, both from a mission and a cost perspective, to limit the information that is transmitted between vehicles in formation. However, the lack of information regarding the state of motion of neighboring vehicles can lead to degraded performance and even instability. This paper presents an adaptive output feedback approach for addressing this problem. We design adaptive formation controllers that allow each vehicle in formation to maintain separation and relative orientation with respect to neighboring vehicles, while avoiding obstacles. The method works by enabling each vehicle in the formation to adaptively correct for the effect that the motions of neighboring vehicles have when regulating relative variables like range and line of sight. It is assumed that estimates of these variables can be derived using passive, vision-based sensors. The need for explicit communication to maintain formation is minimized and the resulting controller solution is decentralized. We implement a reactive obstacle avoidance controller to navigate in an environment with obstacles. The formation controller and obstacle avoidance controller are outer-loop controllers whose outputs are speed and heading commands. These commands are blended together to generate composite speed and heading commands that are inputs to the inner-loop controller. The weights used for blending the commands depend upon the priority of the task at hand. We illustrate the method with an example involving a team of three aircraft keeping formation in the presence of obstacles.

Book Formation Control

Download or read book Formation Control written by Hyo-Sung Ahn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-29 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph introduces recent developments in formation control of distributed-agent systems. Eschewing the traditional concern with the dynamic characteristics of individual agents, the book proposes a treatment that studies the formation control problem in terms of interactions among agents including factors such as sensing topology, communication and actuation topologies, and computations. Keeping pace with recent technological advancements in control, communications, sensing and computation that have begun to bring the applications of distributed-systems theory out of the industrial sphere and into that of day-to-day life, this monograph provides distributed control algorithms for a group of agents that may behave together. Unlike traditional control laws that usually require measurements with respect to a global coordinate frame and communications between a centralized operation center and agents, this book provides control laws that require only relative measurements and communications between agents without interaction with a centralized operator. Since the control algorithms presented in this book do not require any global sensing and any information exchanges with a centralized operation center, they can be realized in a fully distributed way, which significantly reduces the operation and implementation costs of a group of agents. Formation Control will give both students and researchers interested in pursuing this field a good grounding on which to base their work.

Book Adaptive Robust Guidance Scheme Based on the Sliding Mode Control in an Aircraft Pursuit Evasion Problem

Download or read book Adaptive Robust Guidance Scheme Based on the Sliding Mode Control in an Aircraft Pursuit Evasion Problem written by Jian Chen and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this chapter, a robust guidance scheme utilizing a line-of-sight (LOS) observation is presented. Initial relative speed and distance, and error boundaries of them are estimated in accordance with the interceptor-target relative motion kinematics. A robust guidance scheme based on the sliding mode control (SMC) is developed, which requires the boundaries of the target maneuver, and inevitably has jitter phenomenon. For solving above-mentioned problems, an estimation to the target acceleration's boundary is developed for enhancing robustness of the guidance scheme and the Lyapunov stabilization is analyzed. The proposed robust guidance scheme's brief characteristic is to reduce the effect of relative speed and distance, to reduce the effect of target maneuverability on the guidance precision, and to strengthen the influence of line-of-sight angular velocity. The proposed scheme's performances are validated by the simulations of different target maneuvers under two worst-case conditions.

Book Modeling Analysis and Control of Close Formation Flight

Download or read book Modeling Analysis and Control of Close Formation Flight written by Qingrui Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Close formation flight is extensively investigated from the perspectives of dynamic modeling, aerodynamic analysis, and control design. A lifting-line based aerodynamic model is presented to describe the aerodynamic coupling between two aircraft in close formation. The introduced aerodynamic model is validated via the comparison with a single horseshoe vortex-based model, a vortex lattice method-based model, and experimental results. Comprehensive analysis is thereafter conducted to investigate the drag reduction variations with respect to different relative positions, angles of attack, sideslip angles, and leader-to-follower wing span ratios. The analysis indicates that the drag reduction performance of close formation flight is sensitive to the formation position accuracy. Additionally, basic requirements are formulated for close formation flight control. In terms of the proposed aerodynamic model, a linear robust adaptive formation controller is developed specifically for close formation at level and straight flight. The proposed robust adaptive controller shows dramatic increase in both transient performance and robustness against model uncertainties and disturbances. The nonlinear robust close formation control problem is thereafter studied under a leader-following architecture. Nonlinear robust close formation controllers with different considerations are proposed based on a command filtered backstepping method and an uncertainty and disturbance estimation technique. The proposed nonlinear robust formation controllers could accommodate more complex flight scenarios, for instance, different flight maneuvers and close formation of more than three aircraft. With the increase of the number of aircraft in close formation, a leader-following formation controller might become less and less efficient. Regarding the efficiency degradation issue of leader-following formation controllers, two cooperative control algorithms are introduced, which exhibit better tracking performance for close formation of a large number of aircraft. Extensive simulations are carried out to validate the effectiveness of all proposed close formation control algorithms.
