Book 4000 Years of Christmas

Download or read book 4000 Years of Christmas written by Earl W. Count and published by Ulysses Press. This book was released on 2000-09-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if our entire civilization could write its own memoirs and tell the complete story of Christmas past? Surprisingly, the tale would begin not in Bethlehem, but two thousand years earlier in the cradle of civilization. It would be a nostalgic story involving Christians and non-Christians alike. Babylonians Greeks, and Romans - whose ancient customs became part of the Christmas celebration - would people its pages. We would see early Europeans hanging fir sprigs and winter greenery to renew life and protect against the cold blasts of Arctic wind. People who had not yet learned of the Christ child would be burning Yule logs. Of course, the most important chapter in these memoirs would take place in a manger surrounded by Wise Men and marked with a brilliant star. But the tale would continue on for another two thousand years as generation after generation added to the customs of Christmas.

Book Metaphysical Poems

Download or read book Metaphysical Poems written by Adam Mickiewicz and published by Brill U Schoningh. This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adam Mickiewicz (1798 - 1855) was the greatest Polish Romantic poet, and one of the great intellectual and literary figures of the first half of the 19th century in Europe. Through his verses, as well as his efforts as a scholar, lecturer, political activist and literary celebrity, he sought to bridge the gap between the Slavic nations and the culture of Western Europe. This selection of 27 poems focuses on the poems within Mickiewicz's oeuvre which might be described as metaphysical. These original, ingenious verses explore an astonishing range of religious, mystical, philosophical, and existential themes, inviting the reader to include Mickiewicz among the most eminent figures of early European Romanticism, including Coleridge, Wordsworth and Novalis, as well the American transcendentalists. Mickiewicz's poetry and thought are the creation of a restlessly inventive mind: his vision was unorthodox, unpredictable and ever-developing. The book presents a bilingual edition (Polish-English) with a scholarly introduction and commentary, presenting Mickiewicz as a writer in the context of his times. The co-editors of the volume are Jerzy Fie?ko, one of the eminent experts in the field of Mickiewicz studies, and Mateusz Stro?y?ski, an internationally recognized scholar of the Platonic tradition and Western mysticism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new annotated translation in elegant English prose of this masterpiece of European Romantic literature. Pan Tadeusz is a classic tale of mystery, war and patriotism set in the turbulent Napoleonic era. First published in 1834 in Paris, it has been called “the last epos” in world literature. The old Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth lies dismembered, erased from the political map of Europe by the great powers of Russia, Prussia, and Austria. A brief ray of hope rekindles national hopes in 1807 when Napoleon establishes the Duchy of Warsaw by the terms of the Treaty of Tilsit and prepares to invade Russia. The oft-overshadowed counterpoint to War and Peace and the 1812 Overture. Sponsored by the Polish Book Institute's book in translation program

Download or read book Pan Tadeusz written by Adam Mickiewicz and published by . This book was released on 2015-10-07 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pan Tadeusz" begins just as Napoleon is preparing to invade Russia. It tells the story of two feuding families and the young lovers caught in the middle. A sultry coquette stands in the way of a beautiful young maiden and her smitten soldier, while opposing families waste precious bullets fighting each other rather than Russia, their occupier enemy. Woven into the historic tapestry are memorable characters such as corrupt Russian soldiers, fearless Polish swordsmen, wise old men and even a mysterious monk, who prays piously even as he shoots with deadly aim. Adam Mickiewicz (1798 - 1855) wrote "Pan Tadeusz" while exiled in France. His homeland was occupied by Russia, where he would not have had the freedom to write this ode to Polish history and heritage. His great work remains today required reading in Polish schools. This English version was translated by George Rapall Noyes in 1917. He wrote it in prose rather than the original poem structure, but it retains all the grand sweep of historical detail, rich cultural references and romantic passions of a time when Napoleon coveted Russia and Poles desired their freedom.

Book The Sonnets

  • Pages : 190 pages

Download or read book The Sonnets written by Adam Mickiewicz and published by . This book was released on 2019-02 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because the poetry of Adam Mickiewicz is so closely identified with the history of the Polish nation, one often reads him as an institution, rather than a real person. In the Crimean and Erotic Sonnets of the national bard, we are presented with the fresh, real, and striking poetry of a living, breathing man of flesh and blood. Mickiewicz proved to be a master of Petrarchan form. His Erotic Sonnets chronicle the development of a love affair from its first stirrings to its disillusioning denouement, at times in a bitingly sardonic tone. The Crimean Sonnets, a verse account of his journeys through the beautiful Crimean Peninsula, constitute the most perfect cycle of descriptive sonnets since du Bellay. The Sonnets of Adam Mickiewicz are given in the original Polish, in facing-page format, with English verse translations by Charles S. Kraszewski. Along with the entirety of the Crimean and Erotic Sonnets, other "loose" sonnets by Mickiewicz are included, which provide the reader with the most comprehensive collection to date of Mickiewicz's sonneteering. Fronted with a critical introduction, The Sonnets of Adam Mickiewicz also contain generous textual notes by the poet and the translator. Translated from the Polish and introduced by Charles S. Kraszewski. This book has been published with the support of the (c)POLAND Translation Program. Publishers Maxim Hodak & Max Mendor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adam Mickiewicz: The National Poet of Poland This book does not claim to be a full biography of Adam Mickiewicz. I have merely attempted to give a sketch of the work and character of a man who was not only Poland's most inspired poet and one of the noblest personalities in her history, but whose place is among the greatest idealists of the nineteenth century. I have, therefore, allowed myself a free hand, dwelling at greater length upon the more striking points in his career, and passing over, or else very lightly touching upon, others which seemed to me of less importance or of little interest to the English reader. By some strange turn of fate Mickiewicz, well known in other countries, is almost a stranger in England. His nation's splendid literature suffers from an equally inexplicable and a most regrettable neglect among us. If this book is fortunate enough to awaken in any English heart some interest or sympathy, not merely for the singularly attractive figure of the poet who is my subject, but still more for the sufferings, struggles and ideals Of the great and heroic nation of whom he was the devoted son, my object in writing it will be fulfilled.
