(1) Each facility or part of a facility constructed by, on behalf of, or for the use of a public entity shall be designed and constructed in such manner that the facility or part of the facility is readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities, if the construction was commenced after January 26, 1992. In Chapter 2 the emphasis is on the law's definition of a "qualified individual with a disability." Chapter 3 identifies action steps toward compliance and offers a three-phase process for completing self-evaluation planning. Chapter 4 reviews the general prohibitions against discrimination contained in Title II regulations, especially schools' obligation to provide a "free and appropriate public education." Chapter 5 explains ADA provisions concerning recruitment, hiring, and other employment-related issues. Program accessibility is the focus of Chapter 6. Chapter 7 explains Title II requirements for ensuring effective communication for persons with visual, hearing, and speech disabilities. Chapter 8 reviews the enforcement procedures for Title II and the remedies available if an institution is determined not to be in compliance. Book Opportunities for Improving Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities

Download or read book Opportunities for Improving Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the general public in the United States assumes children to be generally healthy and thriving, a substantial and growing number of children have at least one chronic health condition. Many of these conditions are associated with disabilities and interfere regularly with children's usual activities, such as play or leisure activities, attending school, and engaging in family or community activities. In their most severe forms, such disorders are serious lifelong threats to children's social, emotional well-being and quality of life, and anticipated adult outcomes such as for employment or independent living. However, pinpointing the prevalence of disability among children in the U.S. is difficult, as conceptual frameworks and definitions of disability vary among federal programs that provide services to this population and national surveys, the two primary sources for prevalence data. Opportunities for Improving Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities provides a comprehensive analysis of health outcomes for school-aged children with disabilities. This report reviews and assesses programs, services, and supports available to these children and their families. It also describes overarching program, service, and treatment goals; examines outreach efforts and utilization rates; identifies what outcomes are measured and how they are reported; and describes what is known about the effectiveness of these programs and services.

Download or read book Steps to Assessment written by Karen Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this guide is to address the knowledge areas and skills impacted by hearing loss and to describe assessment procedures to identify the adverse educational effect of hearing loss in these areas. It is not the intent of this guide to include all assessment instruments that could be used to identify the areas of strengths and needs of students with hearing loss. It has been developed to provide a framework for school teams and professionals specializing in the education of students with hearing loss to use when assessing the unique needs of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. These assessments can be used as part of the evaluation process to determine eligibility, as tools for developing specific goals and objectives, or as a measure of pre- and post-instruction performance. Expected development in the expanded core knowledge and skills is also a significant consideration when determining the impact of the hearing loss on school performance and will therefore be integrated into the assessment process described.
