Book Boundary Layer Flows Advances in Experimentation Modelling and Simulation

Download or read book Boundary Layer Flows Advances in Experimentation Modelling and Simulation written by Zambri Harun and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-07-24 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid mechanics is a branch of physics with important applications in daily life. The calculation of flow drag on automobiles and high-speed trains benefits from theories in fluid mechanics. Moreover, many mechanical-based devices such as fluid pumps contribute to efficiency, and thus, to the modernization of society. This book highlights the experimental and theoretical aspects of wall-bounded flows to provide important information about related theories and applications. Boundary layer flow experimentation, modelling, and simulation must be considered together to obtain accurate calculations of parameters such as velocity profiles, pressure distribution, and turbulence level. This book is organized into three sections on the structure of the boundary layer, drag reduction initiatives using active control, and the verification and applications of flow mechanics. Chapters discuss the boundary layer type of different pressure gradients, Reynolds number, and speeds from 5 m/s to Mach 3. They also present the results of research on the active control technique for drag reduction initiatives to achieve efficient turbulence in high-speed applications, flow meter devices, and turbulence-generated noise mitigation initiatives.

It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Book Active Control of High Reynolds Number Supersonic Jets Using Plasma Actuators

Download or read book Active Control of High Reynolds Number Supersonic Jets Using Plasma Actuators written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Active flow control of jets with Localized Arc Filament Plasma Actuators (LAFPAs) is conducted over a wide range of the fully expanded jet Mach numbers (M(J) or simply jet Mach number). The jet Mach numbers covered in the present research are 0.9 (with a converging nozzle), 1.2 (overexpanded), 1.3 (perfectly expanded), and 1.4 (underexpanded) with a design Mach number 1.3. Additionally, limited experiments are carried out for an M(J) = 1.65 perfectly-expanded jet. The exit diameter is 2.54 cm (1 inch) for all cases and eight LAFPAs are equally distributed on the perimeter of a boron nitride nozzle extension. The jet spreading is strongly dependent on duty cycle, forcing frequency, and azimuthal modes. The performance of LAFPAs for jet spreading is investigated using two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV). There is an optimum duty cycle, producing maximum jet spreading, for each forcing frequency. A relationship between the optimum duty cycle and forcing frequency is determined from the extensive results in the MJ 0.9, and this relation is used for all experiments. The effect of forcing frequency is investigated for a wide range of forcing Strouhal numbers (StDF = f(F)D/U(e), where f(F), D, and U(e), are forcing frequency, nozzle exit diameter, and jet exit velocity respectively), ranging from 0.09 to 3.0. The azimuthal modes (m) investigated are m = 0 - 3, +/-1, +/-2, and +/-4 - this comprises all modes available with eight actuators. The performance of LAFPAs does also strongly depend on the stagnation temperature of the jet and M(J). The effects of stagnation temperature are investigated for 1.0, 1.4, and 2.0 times the ambient temperature in M(J) 0.9 jet for very limited azimuthal modes and St(DF). In an M(J) 1.65 perfectly-expanded jet, the control authority of LAFPAs is investigated for only m = +/-1 and St(DF) tilde 0.3.

Book Control of Hypersonic High Angle of attack Re entry Flow Using a Semi empirical Plasma Actuator Model

Download or read book Control of Hypersonic High Angle of attack Re entry Flow Using a Semi empirical Plasma Actuator Model written by Michael D. Atkinson and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this dissertation was to explore the possibility of using flow control to stabilize re-entry flight at very high angle-of-attack. This was carried out in three steps: 1) study the structure of representative high angle-of-attack re-entry flows; 2) develop a semi-empirical plasma actuator model that can be applied to control high angle-of-attack re-entry flows; 3) application of the plasma actuator model to study the control of representative re-entry flows. The calculations include viscous and thermochemical non-equilibrium effects, and a high-fidelity physical model to resolve complex flow structure. The contribution of this dissertation was to provide a detailed description of hypersonic viscous flow around blunt-nosed elliptical cone at very high angle-of-attack. High-fidelity, thermochemical non-equilibrium numerical solutions of high angle-of-attack re-entry flows were not published prior to this research, and thus this research can provide a foundation to calculate, analyze, and describe very high angle-of-attack hypersonic re-entry flows. Paramount to this dissertation was the development of a new phenomenological MHD plasma actuator model. A semi-empirical actuator model was developed by adding source terms to the momentum equation, vibrational energy equation, and total energy equation, employing an exponential decay function based on the formulations of Kalra et al. and Poggie. This new plasma actuator model was extended from Poggie's model to include thermochemical non-equilibrium effects and expanded from Kalra's et al. two-dimensional model to include three-dimensional effects. Development, validation, and calibration of the plasma actuator model was based on a qualitative comparison to the experiment of Kalra et al. on manipulating turbulent shock-wave/bounday layer interaction using plasma actuators. The effect of the plasma actuators on turbulent shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction was simulated numerically and a detailed description of the complex flow structure with and without actuation was provided. Finally, application of the plasma actuators to control the complex flow structure of high angle-of-attack re-entry flight vehicles was investigated. To the best of the author's knowledge, no prior research on high angle-of-attack re-entry vehicle control using plasma actuators has been published. Lastly, this dissertation serves as a foundation to compute, analyze, and control complex flow generated around re-entry vehicles at high angle-of-attack.

Book Control of the Oblique Shockwave boundary Layer Interaction in a Supersonic Inlet

Download or read book Control of the Oblique Shockwave boundary Layer Interaction in a Supersonic Inlet written by James Bellinger and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: In a supersonic engine inlet, the adverse pressure gradient caused by an oblique shockwave generated by an inlet cone interacts with low momentum boundary layer air at the inlet wall to create a region of recirculating flow called a separation bubble. This separated region reduces the effective area of the engine inlet, requiring a larger inlet to get the desired mass flow rate. As a result the engine must be larger and heavier. Over the past year, investigations have been done into the viability of controlling this oblique shockwave/boundary layer interaction with plasma actuators, using a supersonic wind tunnel simulating an engine inlet. Plasma actuators were considered for this application due to their ability to generate streamwise vortices in the flow. Vortices move low momentum boundary layer air out into the free stream and high momentum free stream air down into the boundary layer, thus increasing the momentum in the interaction region and reducing or eliminating separation. A test section containing a 10° shock generator and adjustable floor was designed and installed into an existing supersonic wind tunnel. Plasma actuators were tested at various frequencies and distances to the oblique shock impingement point, and their effect was visualized using schlieren photography.
