Book Cooperation of Liver Cells in Health and Disease

Download or read book Cooperation of Liver Cells in Health and Disease written by Z. Kmiec and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is only during the last decade that the functions of sinusoidal endothelial cells, Kupffer cells, hepatic stellate cells, pit cells and other intrahepatic lymphocytes have been better understood. The development of methods for isolation and co-culturing various types of liver cells has established that they communicate and cooperate via secretion of various intercellular mediators. This monograph summarizes multiple data that suggest the important role of cellular cross-talk for the functions of both normal and diseased liver. Special features of the book include concise presentation of the majority of detailed data in 19 tables. Original schemes allow for the clear illustration of complicated intercellular relationships. This is the first ever presentation of the newly emerging field of liver biology, which is important for hepatic function in health and disease and opens new avenues for therapeutic interventions.

Book Signalling from Internalised Growth Factor Receptors

Download or read book Signalling from Internalised Growth Factor Receptors written by Inger Helene Madshus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews knowledge on the interconnection of signal transduction and endocytosis/intracellular trafficking. The chapters cover knowledge obtained by using different model systems. The first chapter deals with Receptor Tyrosin Kinases (RTKs) with emphasis on the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGF receptor) and the Platelet Derived Growth Factor Receptor (PDGF receptor). The second chapter deals with the RTK c-Met and with how this RTK becomes carcinogenic. The third chapter reviews recent understanding on the mechanisms of action of the numerous fibroblast growth factors and their receptors. In the fourth chapter we learn about the trafficking of and signalling from the Growth Hormone Receptor and how this receptor is controlled by ubiquitination. The fifth chapter is devoted to the Interleukin II receptor, essential for activation of T cells. Links between ubiquitination, signalling, endocytosis, and sorting are reviewed. The last chapter discusses current views on how monoubiquitination controls both signalling and trafficking and thereby the final outcome of receptor activation.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Vincent Goffin
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2002-03-31
  • ISBN : 9780792376606
  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book Hormone Signaling written by Vincent Goffin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-03-31 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multicellular organisms require a means of intracellular communication to organize and develop the complex body plan that occurs during embryogenesis and then for cell and organ systems to access and respond to an ever changing environmental milieu. Mediators of this constant exchange of information are growth factors, neurotransmmitters, peptide and protein hormones which bind to cell surface receptors and transduce their signals from the extracellular space to the intracellular compartment. Via multiple signaling pathways, receptors of this general class affect growth, development and differentiation. Smaller hydrophobic signaling molecules, such as steroids and non-steroid hormones, vitamins and metabolic mediators interact with a large family of nuclear receptors. These receptors function as transcription factors affecting gene expression, to regulate the multiple aspects of animal and human physiology, including development, reproduction and homeostasis. The aim of this book is to cover various aspects of intracellular signaling involving hormone receptors.

Book Protooncogenes and Growth Factors in Steroid Hormone Induced Growth and Differentiation

Book Molecular Targeting and Signal Transduction

Download or read book Molecular Targeting and Signal Transduction written by Rakesh Kumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-04-30 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our limited understanding of cellular regulatory signal-transduction-networks has been a barrier to progress in improving the overall cure-rate of human cancers. Delineation of the physiologic roles of the specific regulatory signaling components, with known association with metastatic phenotypes, is a highly promising area which will likely provide the next generation of targeted strategies in the future of molecular cancer medicine. These signaling components are likely to be used in diagnosis, prognosis, and as novel targets for therapeutic development. This book brings together up-to-date summaries by leading cancer researchers on the major principles of cancer cell biology: survival, apoptosis, adhesion, and cell cycle deregulation. It is directed at clinicians and scientists working in the areas of experimental and molecular therapeutics, molecular medicine, translational cancer research, and bio-medical sciences in general.

Book Free Energy Calculations

Download or read book Free Energy Calculations written by Christophe Chipot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-01-08 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free energy constitutes the most important thermodynamic quantity to understand how chemical species recognize each other, associate or react. Examples of problems in which knowledge of the underlying free energy behaviour is required, include conformational equilibria and molecular association, partitioning between immiscible liquids, receptor-drug interaction, protein-protein and protein-DNA association, and protein stability. This volume sets out to present a coherent and comprehensive account of the concepts that underlie different approaches devised for the determination of free energies. The reader will gain the necessary insight into the theoretical and computational foundations of the subject and will be presented with relevant applications from molecular-level modelling and simulations of chemical and biological systems. Both formally accurate and approximate methods are covered using both classical and quantum mechanical descriptions. A central theme of the book is that the wide variety of free energy calculation techniques available today can be understood as different implementations of a few basic principles. The book is aimed at a broad readership of graduate students and researchers having a background in chemistry, physics, engineering and physical biology.

Book Peptide Growth Factors and Their Receptors I

Download or read book Peptide Growth Factors and Their Receptors I written by Michael B. Sporn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume treatise, the collected effort of more than 50 authors, represents the first comprehensive survey of the chemistry and biology of the set of molecules known as peptide growth factors. Although there have been many symposia on this topic, and numerous publications of reviews dealing with selected subsets of growth factors, the entire field has never been covered in a single treatise. It is essential to do this at the present time, as the number of journal articles on peptide growth factors now makes it almost impossible for anyone person to stay informed on this subject by reading the primary literature. At the same time it is becoming increasingly apparent that these substances are of universal importance in biology and medicine and that the original classification of these molecules, based on the laboratory setting of their discovery, as "growth factors," "lymphokines," "cytokines," or "colony stimulating factors," was quite artifactual; they are in fact the basis of a com mon language for intercellular communication. As a set they affect essentially every cell in the body, and in this regard they provide the basis to develop a unified science of cell biology, germane to all of biomedical research. This treatise is divided into four main sections. After three introductory chapters, its principal focus is the detailed description of each of the major peptide growth factors in 26 individual chapters.
