Download or read book Actions Speak Louder than Words written by Celia Oyler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-22 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do educators engage students in community action projects without telling them what to think, how to think, or what to do? Is it possible to integrate social justice organizing into the curriculum without imposing one’s political views on students? In Actions Speak Louder than Words, longtime activist and teacher educator Celia Oyler delves into such questions through firsthand accounts of social action projects. By moving beyond charity work or volunteerism, she shows how community activism projects offer fertile ground for practicing democratic engagement as part of classroom work. Actions Speak Louder than Words is a systematic, qualitative study offering in-depth and detailed portraits of teachers who design social action projects as part of the regular classroom curriculum. Each case forms a chapter organized as a narrative that includes excerpts from classroom dialogues, and interviews with students, teachers, and parents describing their social action projects with sufficient detail to give educators guidance for designing such projects for their own classrooms. The final chapter examines power, pedagogy, and learning outcomes across the cases, providing specific guidance to educators wishing to take up such projects and offering instructional and procedural advice as well as cautions. A fresh new example of taking up the challenge to teach toward equity and social justice, Actions Speak Louder than Words is an invaluable resource for educators who are passionate about the possibility of integrating activism and advocacy into curriculum as a means to engage in strong democracy.

Download or read book The Black Notebooks written by John O'Loughlin and published by John O'Loughlin (of Centretruths Digital Media). This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deriving its title from the black-covered notebooks which were used in its formative composition, this title brings John O'Loughlin's metaphysical philosophy to its logical conclusion, and is therefore probably the most logically comprehensive of all his works to-date, drawing the various strands of his Social Theocratic philosophy together and presenting it in the uniquely aphoristic style which allows for both formal sequences of related ideas (maxims) and for a more informal presentation of material (aphorisms) that is almost essay-like in its relatively discursive character. That said, the material overall is carefully interwoven and taken well beyond the notebook stage of its inception, so that one can feel confident this is no mere off-the-cuff project but the fruit of meticulous composition which should stand O'Loughlin's philosophy in good stead, as well as add a crucial dimension to it which would not have been possible in the past but which here comes to light in terms of how a basic antithesis, namely that between energy and gravity, plays-out in a number of different or seemingly unrelated contexts in relation to what the author holds to be its gender-conditioned genesis. Some of the material, one should add, has already been published in two previous titles, viz. Stations of the Supercross and Supercrossed, but much of it has been reworked and revised here with the incorporation of some previously omitted content, while much additional original material has also been included to give this project its unique character and justify its publication as, in overall terms, a less formal if not looser version of what might seem to some readers the too formal nature of, in particular, Supercrossed, with its plethora of hyphenated phrases. Therefore this should prove an easier though still far from uncomplicated book to read. - A Centretruths Editorial.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Breaking Through ‘Bitch’ sets forth nine distinct ways that successful executive women make their way out from behind that brick wall.” —Fortune When a man strongly asserts his point of view and autonomy, he is hailed as a strong, competent leader. When a woman exhibits the same executive qualities, she is labeled a brusque, overbearing bitch. This is not really news anymore, is it? Yet these unfair perceptions are a key reason why only five percent of Fortune 500 company CEOs are women. How can women leaders break through that brick wall of “bitch?” How can they manage gender expectations and still successfully climb the corporate ladder? Breaking Through “Bitch” takes an innovative, sometimes controversial approach, using stories from executives at the highest corporate levels to show how women can hone their innate skills, rise to the top, and be effective, outstanding leaders. It addresses head-on why women cannot and should not “act like men.” Breaking Through “Bitch”: Describes the unique profile of behaviors that top women leaders have in common Reveals why such stereotypically feminine characteristics as nurturing, empathy, and inclusiveness are the keys to power, not signs of weakness Shows how these characteristics can be equally effective for men in our fast-changing world Breaking Through “Bitch” empowers women to be their best selves, overcome stereotypes, and lead! “It is a must read for all women thinking about ‘leaning in and moving up!’ Men can benefit from the great insights as well.” —Diana Farmer, MD, Professor and Chair Department of Surgery, UC Davis School of Medicine
Download or read book Sid Sin Collection Book One written by T.K. Eldridge and published by Graffridge Publishing. This book was released on with total page 1114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation includes The Chosen, and Sid & Sin 1, 2, & 3: Induction, Fae MisFortunes, & Shifter Secrets The Chosen Someone's killing witches and it's up to the Supernatural Police Department of Belle Cove to find the killer. Andre Boudreau is a star detective with a less than stellar partner in Zeke Clairmont. Both of them are shifters, so when they find another dead witch, they call in one of the department's best investigators, Amelia Fortin. Things take on a whole new level of complication when Andre meets Amelia and sparks fly. This is a prologue story to the Sid & Sin series. Induction: They weren't supposed to exist. Sidonie & Sinclair Boudreau were the offspring of a witch and a shifter. Such pairings usually resulted in death. Sid & Sin had not only survived, but thrived, and managed to sidestep the family legacy of supernatural policing. The disappearance of their parents changed everything. A cryptic message, an ancient prophecy, and a mystery to uncover in order to bring their parents home puts the twins in the crosshairs of an enemy they didn't know existed. What would you do to save those you loved? Fae MisFortunes: It's their first case. Sid & Sin are tasked to find the missing kids. Then they hear that this has happened before. To one of their family. 140 years ago. Kids with a fae bloodline are being taken, and one may be Sin's future son. How is a guy supposed to plan his future with the perfect woman when her son is missing? The twins are racing the clock to keep the past from imploding the present in this tale of old hatreds, jealousy, power, love, and the strength of family. Shifter Secrets: Sid and Sin, as usual, have a lot going on. Pranks against the shifters have escalated to vandalism, with each new incident pushing the risks higher. Old feuds are resurfacing, and when your family lives for centuries, old feuds can get very old indeed. And Grandma Fortin has given Micah and his stepson Nico a place to stay since home is where, when you show up, they have to take you in. Lovely. Sarcasm intended. Sid doesn't have time for his games, but Nico is more than willing to play. The more he's around, the harder it is to stay focused as she and Sin race the clock trying to stop the saboteur before the shifters, and every other supernatural in Belle Cove, are outed to the world, all while trying to keep the centuries-old family politics in the past where it belongs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebration of a life, a story of a death, but most importantly an exploration of grief and loss relevant to all those in a position to make that experience more bearable. This book is essential reading for anyone working or preparing to work with young adults and others facing terminal illness, and their families. It is written by a bereaved mother of a 25 year-old son treated unsuccessfully for cancer. Heartbreakingly honest, Nina draws on relevant theory, research and narrative texts as well as personal reflections. She considers what might have made the hideous journey through treatment, dying and bereavement easier to bear. This is a moving and memorable story for all of us, but there are also learning points throughout for medics and medical policy makers specifically and the health and social care professions more generally. Students and experienced nurses, doctors, counsellors, clerics and others will benefit from deepening their understanding in order to work more effectively with people facing the unthinkable.
