This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden contain some of the world's most important coastal and marine environments and resources. In view of their environmental uniqueness, the threats they are facing, and the need for actions, the preparation of the Strategic Action Programme (SAP) for the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden was initiated in October 1995. THE SAP process, coordinated by the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (PERSGA), has been undertaken with support from the countries of the region, the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), selected international development institutions, and donor organizations. The SAP supports and facilitates the primary goal of PERSGA, which is the conservation of the environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The goals of the SAP are to develop a regional framework for protecting the environment and the sustainable development of coastal and marine resources. The Program outlined in the SAP focuses on both preventive and curative measures required to maintain the rich and diverse coastal and marine resources of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The SAP is a significant process for reaching agreement concerning environmental trends, threats, and priorities at a regional level. It is also a product in the form of an Action Programme which provides a framework for continued cooperation in reaching short-, medium-, and long-term goals through a series of complementary actions at all levels.

Book excerpt: In order to preserve the quality of the sea's resources, fisheries management policies must take into account not only economic, biological & environmental aspects of this problem, but also its social aspects. Marine science & technology research on, for example, fisheries & fish stocks, biodiversity, the ocean's moderation of the greenhouse effect, undersea exploration & coastal management, all play a significant role in the formulation of the policies for long-term management of the sea's biological resources. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe recommends the creation of a European maritime agency which takes into account the ocean's many functions & uses. This book explores all of these ideas, reviews all the legal instruments linked to the exploration of the oceans, & details the new trends in the international law of the sea -- the sea "which belongs to no one".

Book International Environmental Governance

Download or read book International Environmental Governance written by Bharat H. Desai and published by Hotei Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Environmental Governance: Towards UNEPO offers a significant contribution to practitioners and scholars involved in international debates regarding environmental governance. Clarifying the insufficiency of the 1972 UN General Assembly’s model of a small UN Environment Programme in helping nations stem the accumulating degradation of the environment across the globe, the work poses the remaining question: how should international environmental governance be accomplished? The volume is timely in its examination of the post-Rio+20 period, and furthermore addresses the vital issue of the evolution of UNEP into a ‘specialized agency’ designated the UN Environment Protection Organization (UNEPO), a ‘new mandate’ to revive the UN Trusteeship Council to supervise environment and the commons, as well as law-making and institution-building processes as reflected in multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) and other multilateral forms. International Environmental Governance: Towards UNEPO addresses the law-making challenge presented by growth in MEAs and proliferation of international environmental institutions, with a thorough consideration of the debate regarding the need for and efficacy of global governance in the field of environment. Dr. Desai’s timely analysis will assist diplomats, lawyers and scholars, citizens and civil servants alike in finding the new roads forward.
