Download or read book Arthropoda Part B written by Marcel Florkin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-07-23 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Zoology, Volume VI, Arthropoda Part B, provides zoologists and chemists with an overview of the state of knowledge in chemistry and zoology and an introduction to the existing literature. The treatise is arranged by phyla, an arrangement which seemed most suitable for presenting chemical information of zoological significance and for bringing to the attention of chemists those aspects of biochemical diversity of greatest potential interest. Each section, dealing with a major phylum, is introduced by a discussion of the biology and systematics of the group. This is followed by chapters dealing with various aspects of the biochemistry of the group. This volume contains 11 chapters that discuss the integument, hemolymph, blood respiratory pigments, hemolymph coagulation excretion, pigments, chemistry, toxicology, and pharmacology of Arthropoda. The respiration, energy metabolism, and chemical ecology of Crustacea as well as the oxidative metabolism of Insecta are also covered.

Download or read book Pasture Landscapes and Nature Conservation written by Bernd Redecker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main problems and aims of nature conservation in Europe is to protect semi-open landscapes. The development during the past decades is characterized by an ongoing intensivation of land use on the one hand, and an increasing number of former meadows and pastures lying fallow caused by changing economic conditions on the other hand. In several countries the estabishment of larger "pasture landscapes" with a mixed character of open grassland combined with shrubs and forests has been recognized as one solution to this problem. The book gives an overview of the European projects concerning to this topic - nature conservation policy and strategies, scientific results and practical experiences creating large scale grazing systems.

Download or read book The Protozoan Phylum Apicomplexa written by Norman D. Levine and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the turn of the century the Apicomplexa plus some other groups were called Sporozoa. With the advent of the electron microscope, it was realized that most "Sporozoa" have an apical complex; those which do not (the Microspora, Myxozoa, and Ascetospora) were removed and the name Apicomplexa was put forward by Dr. Levine in 1970. Most of the important Apicomplexa fall into five main groups: the gregarines, haemogregarines (about which there is relatively little known), coccidia, haemosporids, and piroplasms. These two volumes classify, list (with synonyms and hosts) and give references to descriptions of the approximately 4600 species of Apicomplexa that have been named so far. Volume I contains an 8-page introduction and covers the gregarines and coccidia (including the haemogregarines). In volume II are the Sarcocystidae (the predator-prey coccidia) the haemosporids (the malaria and related parasites), the piroplasms, and some parasites of uncertain affinities. The Apicomplexa are divided into over 300 genera and more than 60 families, but this division is deceiving. Most of these groups contain only one or a few species. There are fewer than 50 genera with 10 or more named species, and only 8 with 100 or more. These 8 genera (Eimeria, Haemogregarina, Gregarina, Isospora, Haemoproteus, Plasmodium, Sarcocystis, and Babesia) comprise more than half of the species.

Download or read book The Physiology of Insecta written by Morris Rockstein and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physiology of Insecta, Second Edition, Volume II, is part of a multivolume treatise that brings together the known facts, the controversial material, and the many still unsolved and unsettled problems of insect physiology. Since the first edition of this multivolume treatise was published, there has been a notable expansion of scientific endeavor in each of the various aspects of insect physiology. The original three-volume work has now grown to a thoroughly revised six-volume treatise. The book contains nine chapters that focus on the impact of environmental factors on the physiology of insects. The first chapter discusses the influence of temperature on insects, with attention to aspects likely to be of significance in relation to the rate at which individuals are born and die in natural populations. Separate chapters follow on the effects of humidity and radiation. Subsequent chapters deal with insect chemoreception and mechanorception; visual system, with a focus on compound eyes; sound production and the behavior associated with it; luminous insects; and the role of internal circadian oscillations in the life of insects with respect to the ""day"" outside, and on the role of the circadian system in biological time measurement.
