How do human beings within few years after birth become able to speak by themselves without any explicit guidance, transcending both their limited experience and biological limitations? How is it possible that a child is capable of learning any language, or even more than one language easily? It is this miraculous nature of language acquisition which is the topic of this study. Children of minority groups in the Netherlands do not reach native-like mastery in the language of their parents or their primary home language. The proficiency of these children seems to deviate from established norms of native speakers in the country of origin. Deviations from such norms implicitly refer to inaccurate or incorrect grammatical output. Such deviations can be temporary, related to a slow-down in the order of acquisition, or enduring and permanent as a result of incomplete acquisition. After 40 years of migration, and at the time that the Moroccan community is counting its third generation, many questions emerge as to the process of Berber acquisition and status quo of proficiency of children in the Netherlands in comparison with their peers in Morocco. The outcome of this fascinating comparison is yet the beginning of a deeper understanding of the fascinating path of language acquisition in migration.

These languages have undergone important changes in their lexicon, phonology, morphology, and syntax as a result of over a thousand years of Arabic influence. The social situation of Berber-Arabic language contact is similar all over the region: Berber speakers introducing Arabic features into their language, with only little language shift going on. Moreover, the typological profile of the different Berber varieties is relatively homogenous. The comparison of contact-induced change in Berber therefore adds up to a study in typological variation of contact influence under very similar linguistic and social conditions.

Book excerpt: At present, western European societies are at the same time facing the aftermath of massive immigration movements and the challenges of new globalization waves. Education is at the heart of this twofold experience. On the one hand, it is confronted with the demand of developing a canon for national identity construction. On the other hand, it is held responsible for the pupils' emancipation in a globalizing society. As a consequence teachers and pupils are challenged to deal with identity issues in their everyday classroom realities. In politics, the media, and the educational field much has been said and done regarding immigrant minority pupils' identities and their socio-cultural and linguistic integration. Still, little is known about how identities are actually constructed and developed in the discourses of those who make up the primary school classroom. This book reports on two ethnographic case studies carried out in multicultural classrooms in a Dutch and Flemish primary school. It portrays the discourses and the interactions class teachers and their twelve-year-old pupils are engaged in on a daily basis. In-depth analyses are presented of the institutional discourses which the classrooms are part of and of the teachers' and pupils' discourses and their mutual relationships. In both classrooms the analysis shows that pupils' identities are constructed by the institutions and their teachers on the basis of their language behaviour and their 'presupposed' belonging to a homogeneous cultural and/or religious group. The analysis at the same time makes clear that teachers have started questioning their understanding of immigrant minority pupils' identities. It further shows that the pupils under investigation are by no means passive objects of identity ascription. Rather, they appear as active and capable multilingual and multicultural stockbrokers, ready and willing to invest in the linguistic and cultural currency that ensures the highest return on investment.

Book excerpt: The language experience of children developing in linguistically diverse environments is subject to considerable variation both in terms of quantity and quality of language exposure. It is an open question how to investigate language exposure patterns and more important which factors are relevant for successful language learning. For example, children acquiring a minority language, including a signed language, are exposed to less variety of input than children acquiring a more global language. This is because they are living in a smaller linguistic community and with fewer occasions to use the language in everyday life. Despite this reduced input, most native signers are successful language learners. In contrast native language competence is not always achieved in signing deaf children with hearing parents or those with cochlear implants learning a spoken language. A similar outcome but with very different reasons has also been reported for hearing children with language impairment. In these populations acquisition of morphosyntactic aspects is developing atypically ending with an uncomplete linguistic repertoire. The circumstances of exposure during language development tend to differ in significant ways with respect to a large number of factors, such as, (i) length, quality and quantity of input, (ii) social status and attitudes toward the language, (iii) cognitive abilities required for language learning, and (iv) age of first exposure. Having early exposure to a range of different speakers is important in the acquisition of any language and may affect language proficiency. However, negative societal attitudes or a cognitive based disadvantage may create an unfavourable learning environment that prevents language learning from surfacing typically. This situation inevitably generates a different type of exposure for the child and consequently different language competence. In this Research Topic we intend to encourage the debate on social, linguistic and cognitive factors at play for designing an effective environment for language acquisition aiming at integrating linguistic variables coming from theoretical studies on language with environmental variables, such as, measures of language input or cognitive abilities on functions ancillary to language development.
