Book excerpt: "Specifies relevant test signal characteristics, requirements for free, diffuse, and quasi-free sound fields, and procedures for sound field audiometry using pure tones, frequency-modulated tones or other narrow-band test signals presented by means of one or more loudspeakers. The primary purpose is the determination of hearing threshold levels in the frequency range 125 Hz to 8 000 Hz, but this range can be extended to 20 Hz to 16 000 Hz. This standard does not include specifications for the use of hand-held loudspeakers. Speech as a test signal is not covered. The purpose of this standard is to ensure that tests of hearing, using sound field audiometry, give as high a degree of accuracy and reproducibility as possible. Identical to and reproduced from ISO 8253-2:2009." - standards.govt.nz

Book Acoustics and Noise Control

Download or read book Acoustics and Noise Control written by R J Peters and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustics and Noise Control provides a detailed and comprehensive introduction to the principles and practice of acoustics and noise control. Since the last edition was published in 1996 there have been many changes and additions to standards, laws and regulations, codes of practice relating to noise, and in noise measurement techniques and noise control technology so this new edition has been fully revised and updated throughout. The book assumes no previous knowledge of the subject and requires only a basic knowledge of mathematics and physics. There are worked examples in the text to aid understanding and a range of experiments help students use complicated apparatus. Thoroughly revised to cover the latest changes in standards, codes of practice and legislation, this new edition covers much of the Institute of Acoustics Diploma syllabus and has an increased emphasis on the legal issues relating to noise control.

Book Communication Acoustics

Download or read book Communication Acoustics written by Ville Pulkki and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In communication acoustics, the communication channel consists of a sound source, a channel (acoustic and/or electric) and finally the receiver: the human auditory system, a complex and intricate system that shapes the way sound is heard. Thus, when developing techniques in communication acoustics, such as in speech, audio and aided hearing, it is important to understand the time–frequency–space resolution of hearing. This book facilitates the reader’s understanding and development of speech and audio techniques based on our knowledge of the auditory perceptual mechanisms by introducing the physical, signal-processing and psychophysical background to communication acoustics. It then provides a detailed explanation of sound technologies where a human listener is involved, including audio and speech techniques, sound quality measurement, hearing aids and audiology. Key features: Explains perceptually-based audio: the authors take a detailed but accessible engineering perspective on sound and hearing with a focus on the human place in the audio communications signal chain, from psychoacoustics and audiology to optimizing digital signal processing for human listening. Presents a wide overview of speech, from the human production of speech sounds and basics of phonetics to major speech technologies, recognition and synthesis of speech and methods for speech quality evaluation. Includes MATLAB examples that serve as an excellent basis for the reader’s own investigations into communication acoustics interaction schemes which intuitively combine touch, vision and voice for lifelike interactions.

Book Noise Control

Download or read book Noise Control written by Colin H. Hansen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noise Control: From Concept to Application presents the basic principles of noise control and their practical application to real problems. Numerous examples are worked out in detail and are used to illustrate the concepts in the book. There are few derivations of equations, but reference is made to texts from which these are derived. An excellent learning tool for students and practitioners, this guide to noise control will enable readers to use their knowledge to solve a wide range of industrial noise control problems. Working from basic scientific principles, the author shows how an understanding of sound can be applied to real-world settings.

Book Hearing Loss

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2004-12-17
  • ISBN : 0309092965
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Hearing Loss written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-12-17 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of Americans experience some degree of hearing loss. The Social Security Administration (SSA) operates programs that provide cash disability benefits to people with permanent impairments like hearing loss, if they can show that their impairments meet stringent SSA criteria and their earnings are below an SSA threshold. The National Research Council convened an expert committee at the request of the SSA to study the issues related to disability determination for people with hearing loss. This volume is the product of that study. Hearing Loss: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits reviews current knowledge about hearing loss and its measurement and treatment, and provides an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the current processes and criteria. It recommends changes to strengthen the disability determination process and ensure its reliability and fairness. The book addresses criteria for selection of pure tone and speech tests, guidelines for test administration, testing of hearing in noise, special issues related to testing children, and the difficulty of predicting work capacity from clinical hearing test results. It should be useful to audiologists, otolaryngologists, disability advocates, and others who are concerned with people who have hearing loss.
