Book Internet Economics

Download or read book Internet Economics written by Lee W. McKnight and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Internet has rapidly become an important element of the economic system. The lack of accepted metrics for economic analysis of Internet transactions is therefore increasingly problematic. This book, one of the first to bring together research on Internet engineering and economics, attempts to establish such metrics. The chapters, which developed out of a 1995 workshop held at MIT, include architectural models and analyses of Internet usage, as well as alternative pricing policies. The book is organized into six sections: 1) Introduction to Internet Economics, 2) The Economics of the Internet, 3) Interconnection and Multicast Economics, 4) Usage Sensitive Pricing, 5) Internet Commerce, and 6) Internet Economics and Policy. Book Information Warfare and Security

Download or read book Information Warfare and Security written by Dorothy Elizabeth Robling Denning and published by Addison-Wesley Professional. This book was released on 1999 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What individuals, corporations, and governments need to know about information-related attacks and defenses! Every day, we hear reports of hackers who have penetrated computer networks, vandalized Web pages, and accessed sensitive information. We hear how they have tampered with medical records, disrupted emergency 911 systems, and siphoned money from bank accounts. Could information terrorists, using nothing more than a personal computer, cause planes to crash, widespread power blackouts, or financial chaos? Such real and imaginary scenarios, and our defense against them, are the stuff of information warfare-operations that target or exploit information media to win some objective over an adversary. Dorothy E. Denning, a pioneer in computer security, provides in this book a framework for understanding and dealing with information-based threats: computer break-ins, fraud, sabotage, espionage, piracy, identity theft, invasions of privacy, and electronic warfare. She describes these attacks with astonishing, real examples, as in her analysis of information warfare operations during the Gulf War. Then, offering sound advice for security practices and policies, she explains countermeasures that are both possible and necessary. You will find in this book: A comprehensive and coherent treatment of offensive and defensive information warfare, identifying the key actors, targets, methods, technologies, outcomes, policies, and laws; A theory of information warfare that explains and integrates within a single framework operations involving diverse actors and media; An accurate picture of the threats, illuminated by actual incidents; A description of information warfare technologies and their limitations, particularly the limitations of defensive technologies. Whatever your interest or role in the emerging field of information warfare, this book will give you the background you need to make informed judgments about potential threats and our defenses against them. 0201433036B04062001

Book The Continuing Arms Race

Download or read book The Continuing Arms Race written by Per Larsen and published by Morgan & Claypool. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As human activities moved to the digital domain, so did all the well-known malicious behaviors including fraud, theft, and other trickery. There is no silver bullet, and each security threat calls for a specific answer. One specific threat is that applications accept malformed inputs, and in many cases it is possible to craft inputs that let an intruder take full control over the target computer system. The nature of systems programming languages lies at the heart of the problem. Rather than rewriting decades of well-tested functionality, this book examines ways to live with the (programming) sins of the past while shoring up security in the most efficient manner possible. We explore a range of different options, each making significant progress towards securing legacy programs from malicious inputs. The solutions explored include enforcement-type defenses, which excludes certain program executions because they never arise during normal operation. Another strand explores the idea of presenting adversaries with a moving target that unpredictably changes its attack surface thanks to randomization. We also cover tandem execution ideas where the compromise of one executing clone causes it to diverge from another thus revealing adversarial activities. The main purpose of this book is to provide readers with some of the most influential works on run-time exploits and defenses. We hope that the material in this book will inspire readers and generate new ideas and paradigms.

Book Introduction to Computer Security

Download or read book Introduction to Computer Security written by Matt Bishop and published by Addison-Wesley Professional. This book was released on 2005 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Computer Security draws upon Bishop's widely praised Computer Security: Art and Science, without the highly complex and mathematical coverage that most undergraduate students would find difficult or unnecessary. The result: the field's most concise, accessible, and useful introduction. Matt Bishop thoroughly introduces fundamental techniques and principles for modeling and analyzing security. Readers learn how to express security requirements, translate requirements into policies, implement mechanisms that enforce policy, and ensure that policies are effective. Along the way, the author explains how failures may be exploited by attackers--and how attacks may be discovered, understood, and countered. Supplements available including slides and solutions.
