Book Motivational Profiles in TIMSS Mathematics

Download or read book Motivational Profiles in TIMSS Mathematics written by Michalis P. Michaelides and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents a person-centered exploration of student profiles, using variables related to motivation to do school mathematics derived from the IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) data. Statistical cluster analysis is used to identify groups of students with similar motivational profiles, across grades and over time, for multiple participating countries. While motivational variables systematically relate to school outcomes, linear relationships can obscure the diverse makeup of student subgroups, each with varying combinations of motivation, emotions, and attitudes. In this book, a person-centered analysis of distinct and meaningful motivational profiles and their differences on sociodemographic variables and mathematics performance broadens understanding about the role that motivation characteristics play in learning and achievement in mathematics. Exploiting the richness of IEA’s TIMSS data from many countries, extracted clusters reveal consistent, as well as certain nuanced patterns that are systematically linked to sociodemographic and achievement measures. Student clusters with inconsistent motivational profiles were found in all countries; mathematics self-confidence then emerged as the variable more closely associated with average achievement. The findings demonstrate that teachers, researchers, and policymakers need to take into account differential student profiles, prioritizing techniques that target skill and competence in mathematics, in educational efforts to develop student motivation.

Book Achievement Motivation and Achievement in Mathematics

Download or read book Achievement Motivation and Achievement in Mathematics written by M.S. Rao and published by Discovery Publishing House. This book was released on 2010 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achievement motivation stands for the accomplishment of excellence and the achievement in mathematics stands for the performance of students in mathematics. As per the assumptions and research studies, one influences the other. A study, hence, has been undertaken to identify the level of achievement motivation and achievement in mathematics possessed by the SC and OBC students studying in Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Residential Schools and to study the association between achievement motivation and achievement in mathematics. The students were possessing an average level of achievement motivation and achievement in mathematics, and there was no association between achievement motivation and achievement in mathematics. This study will help many teachers and administrators in planning better curricular and co-curricular programmes.

Book Teacher Quality Instructional Quality and Student Outcomes

Download or read book Teacher Quality Instructional Quality and Student Outcomes written by Trude Nilsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers insights from modeling relations between teacher quality, instructional quality and student outcomes in mathematics across countries. The relations explored take the educational context, such as school climate, into account. The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement’s Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is the only international large-scale study possessing a design framework that enables investigation of relations between teachers, their teaching, and student outcomes in mathematics. TIMSS provides both student achievement data and contextual background data from schools, teachers, students and parents, for over 60 countries. This book makes a major contribution to the field of educational effectiveness, especially teaching effectiveness, where cross-cultural comparisons are scarce. For readers interested in teacher quality, instructional quality, and student achievement and motivation in mathematics, the comparisons across cultures, grades, and time are insightful and thought-provoking. For readers interested in methodology, the advanced analytical methods, combined with application of methods new to educational research, illustrate interesting novel directions in methodology and the secondary analysis of international large-scale assessment (ILSA).

Book Achievement Motivation

Download or read book Achievement Motivation written by Amie Naomhán and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achievement Motivation: Perspectives, Influences and Outcomes aims to examine the definition and measurement of achievement motivation in sport. A systematic search of the literature was undertaken to identify relevant self-report scales, and each scale is critiqued by describing its general properties, factor structure, evidence of reliability and validity, and potential applications. Next, the authors examine competition, which is a state and trait variable related to achievement motivation, and the relationship it has to behavioural, physiological, and affective outcomes during virtual reality-based sport and exercise. The concluding study sets out to determine the relationship between the level of anxiety and student learning motivation, the relationship between student anxiety levels and student learning achievement, the relationship between learning motivation and student learning achievement, and the relationship between the level of anxiety and student learning motivation simultaneously on student learning achievement.
